  1. General Video Game Deals Thread

I'm trying to complete what is probably my last Summer Sale badge. I know some of you guys are participating and may be willing to do some trading. I need cards 1, 2, 3, and 10 and I have extras of 4, 7, and 9. If anyone is interested in doing some 1:1 card trading, my Steam account name is jonac13 (if you don't have me added yet) and my profile name is Thumbs [Jon] (if you confuse me with the like 10 other Jons on this forum).

A big part of it is dumb luck of the draw. I got a steal points token which I turned around for $5-ish the other day, and today I got a foil card which I'll probably sell for $2. I also got a rare item in Battleblock Theatre, which I'll probably sell for like $.30, give to a friend, or actually use if I play that game any time soon.
  3. MO MONEY MO THUMBS - PAYDAY 2

Bump, since this game is on sale today. Anyone interested in playing? I am thinking about picking it up but don't want to if no Thumbs are jumping in on this deal.

For contributing points today, you'll get a free Summer sale card. You can sell it and recoup pretty much your whole loss. Also, I put all my .03 items on the market and the sell super slowly, but probably 30% do eventually sell. Your purchase did nothing on its own, sure. Steam holds a history of your purchases through the sale and every $10 you spend gets you a card. If you were to buy more, it would contribute to you getting that free card. None of these things is meant to redeem whatever wasted effort you perceive, but I figured they were worth noting.

I'm biologically inclined to like Redskins having been born right outside of Washington, but they a unrad in untold number of ways in recent memory. Also, this is probably the most OT this thread has ever been.
  6. Movie/TV recommendations

I felt a personal victory when I decided not to get my popcorn buttered anymore, because that top and middle thing used to bother the shit out of me but now I'm just satisfied with what I get. I always see movies midweek in the early afternoon or first thing Sunday morning to minimize child/teen interactions (also churchgoers which often include families, incidentally). Doesn't work as well in the summers, but it still works.

I just don't know what the math could possibly be that would cause someone to buy one of those things for that much, aside from reselling it.
  8. Idle Digging - Shovel Knight

If you buy it for Steam, you get 1.5 summer cards which can be sold for a not completely insubstantial profit. That's what I'd be doing if I wasn't absolutely broke right now.

I would imagine there's weird theory happening in the background now too, like if Red is consistently winning then less Red team tokens are generated by the system because they don't particularly want to encourage a mass exodus from the other teams.

Steamworld Dig is pretty much 50% Metroidvania, 50% Terraria. Super good, well worth that paltry sum. RED TEAM REPRESENT!

I know you said you dislike Rayman, but that is totally a game that fits the mold of games people that aren't "gamers" would play unassisted. Its systems are less complex than Mario at this point and it has a potential for zen-state fluidity that I think would appeal to anyone.

FO3 and FONV have been $5 in previous sales, so it struck me as odd that they were only going for 66% each instead of 75%. Glad that FO3 at least got the proper cut, eventually.
  14. Movie/TV recommendations

I went to an Alamo Drafthouse in San Antonio and it was divine. Beat out just about every theater experience I've had in the US. I have a pretty decent AMC theater near my house. The high standard that it sets is that matinee is $5/person, regular admission is $7/person. I pay for a $12 yearly membership that gives a $10 gift card with every $100 spent, no "convenience fees" when ordering tickets online, and free upgrades to drinks and popcorn. The theaters tend to be clean and entry and exit into the theater isn't laboriously complicated to the point where I'd weave through crowds of people. I can generally get out the door for $30 between my wife and I and feel I get my money's worth. That said, the advertising is quite excessive. There's a pre-trailers set of advertisements for about 30 minutes prior to the listed showtime that tend to sleazily give "behind-the-scenes" looks at bad cable TV shows and shitty movies like Transformers with ad budget to burn. There are usually upwards of 10 trailers starting at showtime that probably take up at least 15-20 minutes prior to the movie. Even the turn off your cell phones notice is usually an ad for concessions. I also had a super odd experience in my showing yesterday where a woman was talking loudly and practically screaming during action scenes. I'm pretty sure she was intoxicated in some fashion. I barely heard her when I moved to the front of the theater (she was in the back), but it was still distracting. Nothing substantive was done about her, despite the fact that I complained (which I'm wont to do, considering nobody else seems to bother).
  15. PlayStation+

US PS+ for July PS4 - Towerfall Ascension, Strider PS3 - Dead Space 3, Vessel Vita - Muramasa Rebirth, Doki Doki Universe EU PS+ Only difference is Lego Batman 2 instead of Muramasa (sorry, that sucks!) So stoked!

Well, it says: So you theoretically have that long, it just strikes me as odd that it didn't start as on sale and only updated to that discount half-way through. I kinda doubt it'll get any cheaper, so you might want to pull the trigger while you can. Your call, though.
  17. Movie/TV recommendations

I liked Edge of Tomorrow and my wife convinced me that while the ending isn't amazing by my logical, analytical standards, it was emotionally satisfying for her so I'm going to take her word for it and say it was an overall pretty good, like A- movie.

Save the money for that PS4!

    Yo Architecture, Wolfenstein is $40.19.

Keep in mind that Mario Kart for Wii sold some obscene number of copies like 20 million.

Valve has changed the way that the rewards work, it's now staggered - 1st place - 30 people get top 3 games 2nd place - 20 people get top 2 games 3rd place - 10 people get top 1 game So, again, it's probably in your best interest to contribute at least one point per day (one badge in any game) if you can manage it for maximum Summer card and free game potential.

Are people actually falling for that stuff? I have a particularly negative opinion of Jenny McCarthy because I feel that her cause is actually successful, what with the proven spike in completely preventable, highly contagious infections and diseases. I never got the impression that any normal people were actually buying the Scientology thing, so as an apparently less effective spokesman I feel that Cruise is thus less evil. Not to mention Cruise actually has something artistically to offer while McCarthy has absolutely nothing to offer, which doesn't necessarily negate his Scientology stuff but at least improves his net good stuff to bad stuff. Though I will concede that any kids harmed directly or indirectly by Cruise's advocacy are a kid too many.
  23. Books, books, books...

I also had the same experience with A Wild Sheep Chase. It was a book that destroyed the book club I was in at the time.

I don't really think he's that evil or crazy, I think his image has been largely sensationalized. That's not to say that scientology is not insane (which I think it is) or he didn't mistreat Katie Holmes (which I imagine he probably did), but I don't particularly think he's the firebrand or zealot that he's made out to be. It's hard to forget that classic opener for the "Tom Cruise is crazy" era - him jumping on Oprah's couch - but I challenge you to actually find the context for that video and ask yourself if it was really deserving of the ensuing meme. He was recently on an episode of the Nerdist Podcast and really, he just comes off as a super boring dude who happens to be a good actor.
