Actually you do care about her. Or in other words, she deserves to be "exposed" for something she may or may not have done. Guilty until... well, never proven innocent because it's not in her personal interest to prove herself innocent as it just eggs on the trolls who want to ruin her life. Also, there's not much proof to be found in he-said and she-said. So basically just if there's a concern, that person is guilty. Gotcha.

Nobody made that claim. He was saying the internet is not her boss, so she's not accountable to strangers just because they feel like they are allowed to judge her.

I wish. My #1 most wanted feature, I feel like I'm always screenshotting tweets and posting them here.
  6. If I happen to find myself wandering about 5000 miles from home, I'll drop by! Also I'm a huge geography dumbass so I had to Google how many countries are between Sweden (which I'm visiting for Christmas) and the Netherlands so I could potentially make a joke about being 4 months late but closeby. Alas, Sweden is pretty far away so you don't get to have that sweet potential joke.
  7. Games giveaway

New Humble Bundle means new games I got but don't need: Terraria Crusader Kings II PM me if you want either of these things it. Also, just as a side note to people who buy Humble Bundles, the $15 Age of Empires bundle is actually a bundle. I was hoping to be able to give AOE II HD to my wife, but I had to redeem it to get AOE3. Word of warning to the very few people that may be in a similar situation to me.

I guess what I'm arguing is that it must not be obvious to everyone that this is not a good faith attempt to ferret out bad journalist efforts. I mean, that Facebook post that Ben X reposted on the last page of this thread is evidence of that - she's basically saying, "well sure all this misogyny stuff is bad but let's take their 'core argument' seriously" which is fucking insane. And the other half of my argument is that in the Maslow's Heirarchy of "what we need to make games be taken seriously", I think that addressing the toxic nature of misogyny is shelter and journalism ethics are self-actualization. They're just not comparable in terms of priority.

A person from the internet with the information leaked about her WENT TO HER HOUSE. They are using hacked passwords to ACCESS HER FINANCIAL INFORMATION. This is not theoretical. And it recurs with enough frequency that this is not some nebulous threat - people use issues like ethics as a screen of legitimacy so that they can do despicable shit. Recently someone asked, what happened to all the women who used to work at 1UP? Since 1UP was one of the first sites to really have a public presence with the 1UP Show and all their podcasts, it's easy to remember the names of the women that used to work there. A vast majority of them no longer work in the games industry. A lot of that is due to issues with freelancing in this space, but you can bet your ass that harassment played a major part. You cannot convince me that small-time ethical issues matter more than a culture that's exclusionary to the extreme.
  10. Feminism

I'm not really talking about my opinion. I'm just saying that if these people are trying to accomplish something in good faith (which I don't believe is true), the impact of what legitimate wrongdoing they were hoping to reveal pales in comparison to the personal impact that their actions have. Even in the hypothetical case I mentioned, I was more trying to highlight the financial impact that the wrongdoing would have that could be quantified as saying, "look at this bad thing, it made it so X amount more people bought the game due to a higher review score and this measurably, negatively impacting consumers". As it is, even that impact is minimal so I'm having trouble even seeing what I am supposed to be angry about on an ethical front. I appreciate the idea that reviews are tarnished by "transactions" of the nature that these crazy people are suggesting. I just really don't think that it matters all that much, especially when it means that some person (really some people, as anyone close to her is affected) out there is getting death threats. That kind of shit has a chilling effect that destroys the spirit of the industry. What good is the supposed ethical backbone of games when we're fucking dead inside because some assholes stomp on every non-white, non-CIS male out there?

You seriously cannot convince me to care in this particular case. Also, I don't think we deserve to be taken seriously.

I still think the conspiracy is completely and totally irrelevant, but consider for a moment that it was real. So what? What is the actual consequence of potentially five reviewers giving a game a more favorable review because of some sexual tryst off to the side? I mean, if you think that's the most substantive element of the argument because you care about ethics first and foremost, what is the impact? Maybe some other indie game gets slightly less spotlight? I mean, reviews aren't quid pro quo - just because X game gets a better score it doesn't mean Y game gets a worse score, or even less coverage because it's "worse". The developer's games seem to be more personal and passion projects more than anything else - this is not like some PR seductress influencing IGN to effectively bump a Metacritic aggregated score by 5 points and getting a studio to make millions of dollars more as a result. Even if you look at the most potentially "objective" complaint about this whole thing, the stakes for literally everyone but her are so pitifully low. Even if she was exposed by some other means that didn't directly reveal her alleged sexual misconduct, I'm not really convinced that anyone would 1) really care all that much 2) be measurably impacted in any way. So really this is a farce, plain and simple.

The trolls aren't here, so when there's vitriol it's not directly aimed at them. I try to let myself express my emotions here, and then if I confront the trolls I do it with a cooler head. That said, I'm not convinced that anger is a bad thing in either case. Anger is what moves us. I'd hate myself if I wasn't the kind of person who was angry about this stuff. Also when it comes to these people, it's not hard to hold ourselves to a higher standard. As much as I hate these fuckers, I wouldn't dox them and share their personal information publicly.

FWIW: I'm not going to delete any of my posts here because I trust you guys, but don't go off on social media defending her or keeping her name going around. As much of an outrage as this is, she's also a victim that deserves some privacy too.

I saw a suggestion on Twitter that people who support Zoe play Depression Quest today (it's free) so it'll hit the Steam Top 100. I'll be playing it for the first time when I get home.

White people just don't care about black people nationally here in America. Seriously. White people say a bunch of racist shit, black people get on MSNBC and CNN and talk about how shitty that shit is, and then the one white pundit on the panel talks about how the comment was actually a substantive question about ethics, politics, etc. Multiply that by whatever number you want. Black people beaten and tear gassed in the streets. Oh, lots of the reporters are wearing glasses? Liberal. Black? Biased. Al Jazeera America? Arab fucks we already decided to hate. Liberal media is biased and law-and-order is always right. Police are getting thrown under the bus because they're making some small mistakes. Liberal media is continuing an anti-gun agenda. Oh, months later black people are going to the polls to vote some of these political scumbags out of office? Let's suppress their voter rights because we care about "voter fraud" that takes place nationally in the low thousands. It's systematic, it's hateful, and it clouds the vision of pretty much all white people even when a few white people are pulling those deceptive strings.

In today's I fucking hate misogynist gamers news, Zoe Quinn (developer of Depression Quest) was victim of a hateful blog post by an ex-boyfriend that led to a 4Chan campaign that got her doxxed and her/her close friends hacked. They got her home address, her phone number and of course now random internet manbaby scum are calling her and one person actually showed up at her house. They're doing this under the guise that Quinn slept with a lot of game journos to get special treatment, along with some other shit that even if it was true doesn't come close to making her deserve the shit they're giving her. One of the journos, Nathan Grayson, basically asserts that it's bullshit. TotalBiscuit talked a lot of shit that seemed to be fed to him by 4Chan, so I guess read that if you want to hear what "ethics" garbage they could be talking about. But seriously, it's barely worth your time. In either case, Quinn posted this response saying she basically won't publicly talk about her sexual life, which is only something mangamers would demand a woman talk about. Phil Fish said some good shit about this. I feel like my level of rage is similar to his. Also, he's been on my wavelength about Ferguson too, check out his crazy Twitter feed. Close friend of Zoe Jenn Frank has also had a lot to say about this. I'm so fucking ashamed to identify as a gamer when shit like this happens. How could my passions parallel these fucking insane MRA piles of garbage? This is seriously reaching levels that I can barely tolerate. I had an argument the other day in the comments of a Polygon article where I said it's a shame that women in particular get harassed in the games industry, even famous-y ones like Tomb Raider's Rhianna Pratchett and Camilla Luddington in the recent Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusivity bullshit. Of course, someone had to respond asserting that men were harassed about that too, which I think is entirely a distraction because who cares? I don't care to convince a MRA warchief that women do have it worse no matter how much men also get it. I don't care to present evidence because it's all right in front of us in shit like this.

No doubt, but this Vox interview with MSNBC's Chris Hayes suggests that a majority of people he talked to really want justice for Brown first and foremost - http://www.vox.com/michael-brown-shooting-ferguson-mo/2014/8/18/6032891/chris-hayes-ferguson-interview
  19. I think MSE has great user experience and free is hard to beat, but the file detection rates are not great. They used to be in the high 80 percents, I think they're now better but not very comparable to paid products.
  20. I run Norton, mostly because all stats I've looked at suggest that paid AV programs do a significantly better job than free and I got Norton for free with my Comcast subscription. Before I took advantage of Comcast's offer, I used to use ESET NOD32 because it got the best overall grades from a third-party AV comparison site that I trusted. I also use the paid version of Malwarebytes.

But the injustice dealt to Brown is still the prevailing cause of the actual protesting. If that is addressed, I really think that many people wouldn't be out there putting themselves at risk of being attacked by the police. There's no doubt in my mind that there are more crimes that need to be addressed, but the active cause of people wanting to be out there head to head with police is wanting justice to be served.

I seriously don't think they'd need to bring in anyone if they just indicted or arrested that officer.

It felt a lot like GTA in terms of the cars in that there were like one or two in each vehicle class the drove to my liking but I had to go through every one of the crappy ones to find them. Not to mention there was no way to "favorite" the dial-a-cars, so I had to memorize which ones were suitable. By the end of the game, I got tired of that and just committed to one car and one motorcycle. I actually ended up liking the world/story by the end too, but only by attrition of going through literally every story-relevant thing. You shouldn't have to play an open world game for 30 hours to get a complete picture of the story.
