Quick question - have you actually filled out a report before? This is not a trick or gotcha question, just curious, because I've reported a handful of times and I honestly feel like it takes too long. It's only five or seven minutes max, but that's seems to me like a long time to write out a report that I honestly don't feel will be seen or acted upon. In fact, of the five or six reports I've submitted (all seemingly legitimate, all for harassment/abuse of myself and not a third-party) I've not gotten a single email back saying action was taken. I follow a lot of relatively minor public feminists (I'm talking < 10k followers) that sometimes say things that get 10+ responses that probably deserve to be reported. That means that for saying one thing, a non-"famous" Twitter user has to spend upwards of an hour just to have a small chance at the tiniest justice (since 90% of those are probably sock puppet accounts).
  2. Spelunky!

Fuuuuuu Spelunky coming out on PS4 next Tuesday with cross-buy (you'll own it if you owned the PS3 or Vita version) and PlayStation Plus (if you're a PS+ subscriber, it'll be yours at no cost as long as you 'buy' it in October). It's been just long enough since I played this ravenously that I can see myself falling right back into that black hole of obsession.

That mission was crazy challenging. Really highlighted the types of ammo and how you really need to have different weapons at the ready in case you deal with an elementally shielded ultra at level 24. Honestly, it's really surprising how different Destiny is in a post-game sense. It doesn't change the formula, but it actually deals you a variety, quantity, and diversity of enemies that actually makes the game challenging and tests the different capabilities of everyone in a fire time. It's really making me want to fully level the Defender subclass so I could be a bit more diverse in these post-game situations.

I don't think that anyone is making the assertion that advertisement makes companies evil, but I do really think there's something to be said for the fact that priorities shift based on who the actual paying customers are. I also think it would be silly to expect that these companies could handle all or most of any abuse or harassment for the very reasons you say. However, I don't think it's unfair to expect that as these companies are presumably growing, they shouldn't be more proactive and more efficient in dealing with such issues. Regardless of the scale of the userbase, there must be solutions that are sufficient to deal with that scale. From what I can tell, there are effectively zero advancements in Twitter's dealing with such issues. There are no policy changes, no apparent shift in how they deal with reporting, etc. I've been thinking about Twitter specifically, especially with the rise of BlockBot and other such services that help manage trolls and whatnot. BlockBot is opt-in and appoints people in the community who can add people to the Block List that is applied to all users of the service. The nominations are ranked based on how certain the reporter is that the account in question is in fact trolling and users can determine what Block List they want to opt into based on that rank. There's a veto system in place so that if one reporter seems to be abusing the system or made a nomination in error, any other reporter can veto that appointment. It's clearly not an ideal system, but it shows actual promise in how to deal with community reporting. What is stopping Twitter from initiating such a system or something similar to it? Undoubtedly such a big company that's spending millions on developing their product can work with that idea, make it more nuanced, and scale it to appropriately deal with the whole population of Twitter. If you need appointed community members who could act as these reporting authorities, there are already verified accounts that could act in that capacity. My point is, as the scale goes up so does the responsibility. I don't think the scale excuses them from that responsibility, but I think it's reasonable to take it into account and give them the benefit of the doubt. But at least in my perception, big companies like Twitter and Reddit aren't making great strides to scale their abuse management to the size of their audience. (Also re: Ello, I literally think that nobody in this thread is holding them up as social media paragons who are doing everything right and would continue to do things right if they suddenly lucked into some Twitter-like scale.)
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

It's possible that he deleted the tweets and changed the Twitter ID of his account, I've seen it before from people who are shamed after saying dumb shit. That won't help you with your Storify, but just a fun fact I suppose.

I really don't think Reddit is a great example. Given their handling of the Fappening, I come to the same conclusion re: Reddit that I do Twitter, namely that it's in their best interest to host the shittiest side of the internet until the exact moment it isn't in their best interest. Harassment and abuse brings traffic from both the perpetrators and the people up in arms about it. If the harassment and abuse get bad enough, the Reddit admins "do something about it" and ban some people or donate to charity. And then once the microscope finds another target, it's all fair game again - sure, they banned the Fappening subreddit but now there's a "Fappening discussion" subreddit that's alive and well.

Maya Felix is selling a shirts design (five shirt types, all acceptable for women with two that are unisex, plus a hoodie) for SJW's who are "killing video games" - Available for preorder for the next seven hours (it's been on sale for a week or two now) here - http://teespring.com/cuties#pid=262&cid=2288&sid=front
  8. Destiny

Alright, I will probably plan on getting dinner and junk out of the way to be ready around 8 PM EDT.
  9. Destiny

I'll be home around 5pm EDT. I can do it any time after that. I also still need to do some Queen's Wrath missions, if anyone's up for those. I have like 10 of them, though I don't think I'd want to do more than two or three in a row.
  10. Destiny

Anyone still need to do last week's weekly strike? If I'm not mistaken, that won't reset until tomorrow and I haven't done it yet.

There seems to be three shared ways to get XP in patrol situations - Proximity XP - get XP if you are in close proximity to someone who kills a guy. Party XP - get XP if someone in your fireteam kills a guy. Regular old XP - get XP if you deal some damage to a guy and the guy is killed by either you or some other guardian. This is somewhat obfuscated, though, so I have no idea if these are working exactly as I imagine.

Yeah, I don't really know why it couldn't just as easily be 99,999 glimmer and 999 marks.

I think that's probably why I empathize with Dan as well, except my run of things coming naturally ended about halfway through university when I dropped out because I was suddenly shit after just breezing through everything in my life. I must have sounded like such a huge dick when I'd tell people that you can just skip half of the work required and naturally ace tests to get As and Bs in classes. Nowadays, I just wish I was a hard worker and not gifted because having a gift and abusing it is more harmful than helpful.
  14. Destiny

Yeah, I was listening to the latest Daft Souls podcast where Matt Lees was saying that Destiny is the kind of game that he feels he could enjoy for a handful of hours a week, doing three or four daily bounties and playing a couple of multiplayer games each day. I wonder if there's something to be said for for playing games at a different pace when its being reviewed - I think I would have disliked the game as much as several reviewers if I had to compress my playtime into five days. But as a game that I play regularly but not ravenously, Destiny is great.
  15. Other podcasts

Other people have mentioned it, but let me reiterate that Daft Souls is super good. I've been obsessed and listening to the whole backlog.
  16. Games giveaway

I have Humble codes for The Yawgh and Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten (the latter of which I highly recommend!). Send me a PM if you want Defender's Quest, as the former has been claimed.

I understand your sentiment, but I don't really think it's cool to shame people who like popular things. I feel like these forums are a pretty safe place for people who like both the niche, indie, alt stuff as well as people who like big budget things.
  18. http://pcpartpicker.com/ Though that will only give you the power and heat sink parts of the equation. Pretty sure you have to do the "will all fit in the case" manually. Check Newegg reviews for each case, usually people are pretty quick to complain if there is not a lot of clearance for video cards or if third-party heatsinks don't clear the width of the case.
  19. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Someone mentioned Kingdom of Loathing on Twitter which made me want to play again, so now I'm playing that again.
  20. Recently completed video games

I watched a Let's Play of The Cat Lady and it really intrigued me, just from watching I'd highly recommend it to Thumbs. Will definitely be picking it up in the Humble Bundle.

Got my first exotic from Xur, who is hanging out down the stairs from the Dead Orbit dude. He also has exotic helmet engrams for motes of light, which I tried but got hunter helmet.

To me, the whole ad-based service thing is inherently connected to abuse and harassment. It's the exact thing that disincentivizes Twitter from being a harassment-killing machine - why properly manage abusers of the service when their abuse directly results in more traffic? I feel this is a fairly cynical perspective, but it seems to me the only reason why they haven't been more aggressive in dealing with such a clearly widespread and public problem with the service. The truth is, look at who the "customer" is. With Twitter, the customer is advertisers. To best serve advertisers, they want the most users possible actively tweeting and checking their feeds. With Ello, to customer is seemingly the users, though it's not yet clear how they plan to make money from the users. As a result, they would seemingly prioritize user experience since users are the ones they are beholden to.
  23. Destiny

Not live yet, but this is upcoming in the next patch - So basically, even with the discovery of a new loot cave-like-thing I'll probably just run the Tiger Strike Playlist if I feel the need to "farm" because it'll get me those Vanguard points plus a higher chance of getting upgrade materials.
  24. Twitter :)

I used to use Plume and Tweedle. My wife used Plume until just recently so I know that one is still functional. I use the official app because I have just already gotten used to that dumb Twitter ad/mention stuff.
