  1. I think the sheer number of skills/runes would be overwhelming if you shoved them all at a new player right off the bat. That's the only reason I can really think of.

  2.

So if I go in expecting that part to be kind of not great, there are other good things that make it worth a look?

Thinking back on it, I may have been reading too far into the game when I mentioned Freudian overtones. There is definitely some pseudo-psychological meandering, but it only flirts vaguely with the full on Oedipus type stuff that you might associate with writing that takes Freud too seriously.

I'd say that the game works best when it keeps the symbolism and imagery in the writing open-ended. There are a few times when it becomes more heavy-handed, like (minor spoiler)

the area that is supposed to represent the internet

and those definitely bugged me the most.

Still, it was definitely worth playing.

  3. Finished Anodyne.

It was definitely an enjoyable experience. It felt like an extrapolation and expansion of the dream-world concept of Link's Awakening, elaborated into something entirely more surreal with Freudian over-tones. The writing added to this feeling, although it sometimes felt self-consciously vague. The soundtrack was nice although it occasionally felt derivative of Disasterpiece's work on Fez.

The game-play got to be quite repetitive towards the end of the game, but I was really happy with the game-breaking item that you get at the end. I found the post-game exploration that it opens up to be almost more fun than the game itself.

  4. I will give love to Conker's Bad Fur Day. It's the only Rare game I actually like.

I liked that game a lot back when it came out, but I tried playing the game again a few years ago and I have to say the humor did not age well. I'm normally not the sort of person to use the word 'insufferable' but I'm being tempted right now.

  5. Was there ever a scene in a game or movie where two people have fallen off a ledge and are fighting in mid air, and they're both trying to maneuver the other person into a position where they'll hit the ground first and break their fall?

That's what immediately comes to mind for this, but I have a nagging feeling that I've seen it done before...

  6. "Oh, you liked Yoshi's Island? You consider it one of gaming's masterpieces? Well, here's what betrayal feels like."

Eventually, we were given Yoshi's Island DS, which was, in fact, Yoshi's Island 2, but it was so disappointing.

Wow, somehow I didn't even know that this game existed! I must have thought it was a re-make ala Super Mario Advance. Is it worth playing if I loved the original Yoshi's Island?

  7. I wonder if it's possible for animals to act weird on purpose? For example, can a chimpanzee conceive of going up to it's friend and making bizarre noises just to see what reaction he/she will give? Maybe that's a uniquely human trait...

  8. Personally, I don't learn very well from listening.

I've liked video tutorials recently because in OS X, you can make youtube and Unity both full screen, and then swipe back and forth between them super quick. It makes it easy to follow along with what they're doing.
