So, gamespot named Demon's Souls as their PS3 goty. I haven't paid much attention to the site since Gerstmann and half the editorial staff left, but this seems like a weird choice. Demon's Souls is a great game, but you have to consider the difficulty at some point. It has to be in the mix for the best game on PS3, but should it actually get it?

I'm a little concerned about the control scheme, but overall I'm ok with quicktime events and button pressing if the story is really good. REALLY good. Still, I am excited about this game.

I have yet to play a pixeljunk game but this is a pretty exciting reaction. I'm going to have to grab this when I'm back with my PS3 after Christmas.

Thank God for Resident Evil 4, I say. I'll never forget how awesome playing that game felt the first time I put it in the Gamecube. I see what you mean about the generic elements of the game, but it never bothered me. I didn't expect to enjoy Dead Space as much as I did. I really got into it, and started another playthrough as soon as I finished my first. I suppose it's a bit like enjoying a genre movie that sticks to tried and trusted techniques but does a really good job of it.

It looks like a cool thing. I don't really have the money for a purchase like that though. I imagine with the independent nature of it, they'll only make a couple of batches.

Cool, I have to go and check these guys out. My netbook can run KOTOR, but things get truly weird with the resolution. It's unplayable at the moment.

I agree with this completely. ODST was a really pleasant surprise for me. It looks like Bungie have my soul for now. It's been a fantastic year. There are so many games I feel like I will get around to eventually but haven't even been able to consider buying (I'm looking at you, Forza 3). I didn't expect it at all but I'd have Dragon Age as my goty, with Dawn of War II as an honourable mention (I played it through on easy and still loved every minute of it).

I also have Wolfenstein RPG, and I really like it. Otherwise, I don't play a lot of games on the iPhone to be honest. Still: - Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition (this IS idlethumbs) - Baseball Superstars by Gamevil (cartoony baseball fun, a bit shallow but fun while it lasts) As for apps, I highly recommend: - Crosswords - Tripcase (if you do a fair bit of travelling) Have fun with your iPod touch mate!

Ok, that game looks fantastic. I would be down for that.

Oh yeah, I think you're right. Importing used to be a MUCH bigger deal. While saying that, I remember playing considerably less video games when I was living in England because it's just so expensive. Video game fans in Europe and particularly in Britain get screwed. Of course, you have to pay for shipping on imports in any case. Thing is, didn't Brazil just get the PS2 or something crazy like that? Maybe I'm remembering it wrong.

I'm not all that arty and I try not to be farty, but thanks for the cool link!

I love region freedom for a rather mundane reason. I travel to Asia a bit for work, I live in the US, and my family and many close friends are in England and Ireland. For birthdays I often get asked for suggestions for a gift, and it would be great to be able to nominate a 360 or Wii game. Last Christmas we were very fortunate to get a Wii for my sister, when my dad could have picked one up with less hassle in Asia. Obviously I represent a pretty small group, but it would be nice if region locking didn't exist for video games or for movies!

Songs that remind you of games, and vice versa
Irishjohn replied to Grippage's topic in Video Gaming
Well, I stand by my choice! I suppose I should qualify it... I can't really think of a song that reminds me of a video game, but then I can't think of many songs (with lyrics and fairly short self-contained length and so on, as opposed to music) that stuck with me after I played a game. -
Well, Zero Punctuation is about being funny as much as it is anything else. I can see why you'd have issues with the game, and I find it completely understandable. I'm actually shocked I like this game so much! I just play on easy and treat combat as more or less an obstacle to more plot stuff. I'm being forgiving in that manner, but I can see how the game just wouldn't work for someone. My own interest in the game has been very difficult to nail down and define, other than "I am having a lot of fun playing this game."

I went out and bought the Faunts song that ends Mass Effect as soon as I finished the game. I loved the way the song kicks in as the credits roll, like a great end to an action movie. It just fit everything really well, and I had a cool feeling of "hell yeah I finished this game!" So, it's kind of cheating as it's from the soundtrack, but that Faunts song always makes me think of beating Mass Effect and feeling really good about it. -
Oh, man. That is awesome.

She'll talk to you after you clear that first level (by beating a Demon) and she'll let you update stats and she'll be around for a while after that. Enjoy! I need to get back to Demon's Souls. So difficult. So awesome.

*Breathy Voice* Bayonetta *Breathy Voice*

A "one-handed" mode? Am I the last person on the Internet to notice that and then smirk like a child? Oooh Matron, and so on. Also, I concur and happily participate in regarding... SEEEEEEGA!!!!! -

I had completely dismissed this game purely on the basis of the slightly ridiculous looking protagonist. But now all I hear are good things! The last couple of months have been rough on my wallet. I really don't know if I can afford to get all the games I want in early 2010, but perhaps that means the summer won't be as dead as usual. -
Wow, this is astonishingly generous of you dude. I'll be in touch!

I have been very disciplined, much to my own surprise. This is thanks, mostly, to a complete lack of discipline in the past! I am finally taking the plunge and getting Trine. I almost feel bad getting it at this low price point, assuming the developers are getting a lower cut as well. I can see myself getting it on PSN if I enjoy it on PC half as much as many Thumbs seem to have done themselves.

I am extremely glad you mentioned this! I had no idea.

I know what you mean, but I was okay with the ending. It was all about the journey, man... Possible Spoiler stuff: I'm not happy about the existence of opening day DLC, but I can see myself paying for good and involved quest lines now that I've finished the single-player campaign. Hopefully they will release GTA:IV type expansions that add to the lore. I am now playing through a second time, as a mentally unhinged mage that takes the most "evil" option available in every conversation. It's fun.

I reread a few of the earlier posts, and Miffy, I'm with you all the way on InFamous. I don't think I dug it as much as you, but that game took me by surprise in an awesome way. Also, to stop being a lefty pinko flip-flopper on the real issues, and so on (sorry, there's an election going on in Texas) I pick Dragon Age as my game of the year. For the first time in my life I am messing around with a toolset and making a mod thing. The results are predictably crap but MAN I LOVE THAT GAME.
