Activision's Strategy to Make Every One of its Franchises More Fantastical
Irishjohn replied to pabosher's topic in Video Gaming
I love a bit of fantasy in my games, and not just involving infinite dragons or whatever, the same way that I love fantastical movies. I just went to see Priest. I couldn't find anyone else who wanted to go, but how could I say no to evil future Catholic Church and vampire trains? At the same time, I absolutely hate Michael Bay movies. I gave Transformers a go and actually got so worked up I was furious by the end of it. I don't really get like that with Activision games but I can understand the sentiment. So, I would think there are a fair bit of thumbs who want fantastical elements in their otherwise realistic games, but perhaps keep it more to Die Hard and the first two Lethal Weapon movies type stuff than Michael Bay. -
Fair enough. I did get that there was a bunch of written notes and stuff throughout the game, and I think that RPGs need something along those lines, but it really didn't feel integrated into the game at all. Like I said, I wanted to get out and see more of the world, not the same bloody city and the identical three or four environments outside it. I finished the game, so I obviously enjoyed it to a certain extent. Not sorry I played it either, I just feel really let down, especially after how much I enjoyed Origins.

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

Late to the party here but here's a big black blob of spoiler tags for anyone thinking about the game:

I know very little about the 40K universe but I love everything I've been exposed to, really looking forward to this game, as well as the 40K MMO, assuming that ever happens. Also a bit worried about this game though... I'm naturally worried about any game which has a setting or premise I really like but seems a little bit too much in the pack when it comes to gameplay. This feels a little like "People like 40K, people like Gears, let's do this!" It's not very fair I know, I'm mostly lowering my expectations in the hope that I will like this game as much as I really, really want to.

Activision's Strategy to Make Every One of its Franchises More Fantastical

That pretty much nails it for me. I actually like games that can be out there in a summer blockbuster movie kind of way. I'm sure "event games" or something like that is a big deal inside Activision. I don't think you go to Activision for the more realistic games, or even games like Metro 2033 that have a gritty take on utterly fantastical surroundings. -
I dove into it a few months ago, but stopped playing after about twenty hours. I don't remember why... I remember enjoying it. I don't think I remembered to migrate the save files to my new computer so it's yay for Witcher 2, I guess?
-
Yeah, I've been more or less trying to avoid this stuff for a while now. It could be SO GOOD. But I've been burned before. It's pretty shallow of me but I'm excited at the idea of a western RPG with big bad monster boss type dudes.

I agree with this. I'm not a big multiplayer guy, but for RPGs I really don't see the appeal. It's a grand single-player experience... that's kind of the point, isn't it? If you have a friend who has the time and interest to be available as a co-op player for the majority of a 35 hour campaign fair enough, but how many people are in that position? As for an ME:3 Deathmatch type situation.... well, blurgh.

Wednesday on Steam is... the Sims? I guess it was inevitable. Actually, the only thing holding me back on Sim City 4 for five bucks is the damage it would do to my productivity.

Yeah, me too. Well not seven years. But it's the first forum where I've been more than a lurker and a lazy poster. I'm still lazy and occasionally take weeks off at a time, but this forum is awesome. Welcome everyone!

Regardless of whether or not it's his schtick, I loved Merchant in the game. To be fair, I think he did a great job. He's definitely acting a part, even if he's using his usual comedy accent, intonation and so on.

I agree. I'm pretty sure I break EULAs all the damn time. I know you were being a lot more specific than this, but something should be done about holding people to these massive documents that no company actually believes its consumers are reading.

Agh, I might finally play this game now! Bought it in December in anticipation of having a computer to run it in January, but after that I just played a lot of Chronicles of Riddick and Mass Effect 2. Space, and all that.
-
Ditto. This is just so impressive.

Yup, regional variation in game releases is pretty frustrating. I'm sure this is bouncing around the forum somewhere, and it's not quite the same thing, but a nice read nonetheless. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/03/22/no-oceans-call-for-worldwide-release-dates/ Did Amazon Store come back online for Android? I was reading they had suspended it because of the Apple law suit.

Hey, I'd take it. I haven't played in ages but any winning streak is a good winning streak in SC2!

GDC 2011: The Idle Thumbs Conf Grenade: Games Kasavin
Irishjohn replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I just want to echo this, really happy to see more podcasts from you guys. Looking forward to listening. -
Ditto. I also listen to podcasts when I'm playing Starcraft 2 online. Which I am, um, also not playing right now. I'm afraid. Pity really, Blizzard games have really good sound and music, but you get to a point where you play them so much you can just switch on something else. Also, any sports game.

Yeah, I have yet to go further than a couple of hours into Saints Row 2, though judging from what I've read I am only moments away from discovering its more addictive qualities.

I've never played a Gothic game but this looks really interesting. Considering reading through some of the RPS diaries on the first Risen, although I'm currently sinking into Two Worlds II and I don't know when I'll be in the mood for a "flawed but fun" game again soon. Also, despite it being borrowed from RPS, my favourite thread title in quite a while.

Sorry to hear about this man. All I have to add is that I use Dropbox for document backup and I highly recommend it. Best of luck.

[Sesame Street] I guess we all have to buy a Kinect now...
Irishjohn replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
Yup, I can't buy a kinect because I don't have room to play. A bit nuts. The fact that it looks rather crap so far helps me sleep at night... In Taiwan right now doing some research, the 360 has a much bigger presence than the original Xbox ever had, and the Kinect is getting pushed pretty hard. Not really sure how indicative it is of larger markets though. Also, Double Fine making a Sesame Street game is a cool thing. -
Well, for me TLAD is still the best of all of them. I really liked Undead Nightmare, but despite its goofiness. The story was pretty good and it was a nice change from just doing the same thing again (as they had done with GTAIV) but I kind of wish they had done the same thing. Maybe a story set in Mexico with a character who knew the Mexican rebellion was being led by a jerk and resented Marston for his involvement. Or something like that. So yeah, I enjoyed it quite a bit and it was cool. I would say it was "worthy" but I preferred TLAD for sure.

Do it! Borrow it from your friend! Yet again, I freely admit to having only gotten to the second level of Demon's Souls. It's one of those weird games with pride of place on my backlog, I just never reach up and put it in the PS3. Even my limited experience leads me to strongly encourage you to have a go at the game.
