  1. I don't think I've ever actually posted my Steam ID here. Truth is I don't play a ton of multiplayer games but I am down for having a list with actual people on it in Spelunky. I also have this idea that I will one day actually play some L4D2 online. http://steamcommunity.com/id/irishjohn/
  2. Spelunky!

"I am the master of Spelunky!" And that is why I am glad I bought this game.
  3. Spelunky!

Just caved and got the game. Tried a daily challenge before taking the tutorial and ended up running past the exit to jump into spikes. It was quite funny. I might try to add some people, nobody on my Steam list is playing the game.
  4. Return of the Steam Box!

I feel like in this day and age using a Mac Pro to stream illegal feeds of Bundesliga football in an elaborate palace would be the ultimate statement of proud decadence. I mean, that or a gold iPhone I guess.
  5. Return of the Steam Box!

Well I for one am horrified. I mean, that's what I did too.
  6. Spelunky!

I don't know, I thought the same thing before watching it, but it was pretty good. I want to buy this game, because I am a masochist.
  7. Return of the Steam Box!

Damn it. Now I wish I had a 60" TV.
  8. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I think Knights of Pen and Paper works really well on a smartphone. I really enjoyed it and felt like I got my money's worth.
  9. Half-Life 3

I believe that Valve's policy is now officially the "Fuck You, Internet" Directive. http://www.polygon.com/2013/10/1/4791490/half-life-3-trademark-filed-in-europe I'm sure there are perfectly valid (and boring) legal reasons for this move. There's nothing exciting about it all. And yet... my heart fluttered.
  10. GTA V

I hear it's tough getting into games... I'll definitely be playing but I've been so busy at work that it might be a while before I finish the campaign. I'm sure that there will be multi-thumbing arrangements in the multiplayer forum?
  11. PlayStation+

Or can you...? Yeah, SotC alone makes me want to sign up for PSPlus this week. If I actually finish the bloody thing it makes more sense than buying it AND I might go crazy and play Hotline Miami on a console. Although I'm struggling to find time to play GTA V...
  12. Return of the Steam Box!

I distinctly remember seeing the wii remote for the first time online. I was in St. Helen's visiting a friend, and I'd had a bunch to drink and I looked up the controller for the Revolution, about which I was hugely excited (I think it was still the Revolution then). My friends were not as into games as I was and found the whole thing bizarre.
  13. GTA V

I misread this as Deacon Age: Origins, which would be a completely different type of game.
  14. Return of the Steam Box!

I feel like it will be an amazing controller but I'll still want to use mouse and keyboard. Although I'd love to see someone play Starcraft 2 with this thing.
  15. Return of the Steam Box!

Perfect for Starcraft 2, right? I'm curious about those track pads. There are certain PC games that surely wouldn't work, right? Are we moving away from mouse and keyboard to a controller that can do more stuff?
  16. Return of the Steam Box!

They should actually do this. I mean, come on. I feel like many of Steam's customer base would be cool with dorkiness.
  17. GTA V

To be fair, it's a fairly decent explanation of the reaction. I think it's a little unfair to say people are "determined to be creeped out by a commercial."
  18. GTA V

It just seems like something that could be in the first Robocop film as satire. I'm still not clear on whether they were taking the piss or if this was just a video they sent to marketers that was then put out to the public.
  19. Return of the Steam Box!

They've told Geoff Keighley that they'll make three announcements. So. Half-life 3. Half-life 3. Half-life 3. Episodes. Actually, I am very curious about the Steam Box. I want a gaming PC but can't afford one... so I wouldn't really care about the living room, I would love something I can use as a PC that I can actually afford. Not really holding my breath.
  20. Non-video games

For any table-top wargamer types hanging around, this is pretty good: http://imgur.com/gallery/V0gND
  21. GTA V

My friend and I were discussing this on our podcast last night, talking about the thematic/stylistic choice issues in the game versus its sheer technical achievement. I'm looking forward to getting started tonight. I know exactly what you mean about the "as it happens" vibe with a big game, though these days I almost never get to participate in that way. For what it's worth, I think GTA IV holds up and is well worth playing through at some point. Also the DLC. Excellent stuff.
  22. Diablo III

I stopped playing because the game overheats my computer and shuts the whole thing down. But then, I really need to buy a decent computer.
  23. Plug your shit

I've mentioned it on this thread before but we're more than fifteen episodes in and going reasonably strong. You might fancy a listen. Some friends and I have a weekly podcast that talks about aspects of contemporary popular culture. The idea is to have a solid topic most weeks (i.e. Die Hard, Japan in American film, Eddie Murphy's 1980s output) and we do talk about video games here and there but the idea is to talk about popular culture broadly without disappearing up our own rear ends. http://www.theculturalapocalypse.com/culturalapocalypsepodcast/
  24. GTA V

Thanks for the link; there's an excellent article on NPR about the topic of evil in the show Breaking Bad, linked below. Be aware, there are SIGNIFICANT SPOILERS in that article. I think it's interesting to look at how another medium approaches the topic. Although the whole issue here is that Breaking Bad breaks ground, it's something that's playing on my mind a lot as I wait for the game to arrive in the post tomorrow. http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2013/09/16/223049000/breaking-bad-presents-ozymandias-the-great-and-terrible
  25. GTA V

The metacritic effect is a terrible thing. It's not an issue for GTA V, but for games that are not so certain to do well, publishers will take developers to task over the metacritic score. At least, that was the case five years or so ago. I hope things have improved (and it depends what developer you work for) but I worry that they have not.
