Idle News Podblast - 08/01/09: Surprise
UncleSpaggles replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
You guys should be ashamed. -
I downloaded Space Invaders Infinity Gene before running out the door for a weekend away and failed to notice I needed to pay for the iTouch update to Version 3 to play it - a long angry train journey followed. However, sorted it last night and had a blast with it on the commute into London this morning. First thing that's a little disappointing is the firing is continuous (though there is an option to toggle it on and off with a double tap), this puts a lot of pressure on the handling, as that kind of becomes the games focus, which thankfully is incredibly responsive. Having your finger on the screen occasionally obscures rear attacking enemies, but overall its pretty close to prefect and weaving through bullet patterns just feels right. The presentation celebrates the retro routes of the original and reminded me some what of REZ, with each level evolving as you progress. The music is cool, but there is the option to play your own music too. The game chucks loads of unlockables at you that can be activated from the menu so you can customise your weapons and lives to suit your style of play. Here is a clip: bBpiZwo8JzE So, yeah, loving this right now, its a pretty sweet little old school fix.

As long as it includes songs from the hit movie Labyrinth then I'm in too.

I've yet to see it, but talking of stop motion animation (and taking this even more off its rails) have you seen the trailer for the new Fantastic Mr Fox? I hear its by the guys who did Nightmare Before Christmas, but looks more like Robot Chicken... http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810028004/trailer -

Didn't Disney have a problem with Tim Burton's dark concept designs when he worked there as a young pup, now he is brining in Alice in Wonderland for them. Maybe they have come around to his warped way of thinking at last? -

"Hey Pluto, here boy, I'm gonna eat your soul and assimilate your skeleton." Nightmares for me tonight... -
Yes, it reminded me of the bit in the Tenacious D song when he pauses and says 'Tribute.'

Those instructional clips were both jolly funny and educational as I have a Japanese Wii - when I finally get around to buying Resort this episode will be worth its weight in gold...it does sound complicated... -
Most of it has been about you.

I didn't bring them here...I'm sure I shut the door behind me.

This place is weird this morning...

RB:Bowie would be awesome for the make-up and costume character creation - You made yourself look like a freaky clown, man... 30GEES!

I had a moment of total protonic reversal in GAME recently after claiming that you could never get me to buy a plastic guitar peripheral, as I own a real guitar and any time spent away from that in favour of a 'toy' version would be a betrayal to my future self. And yet there I was sat on the train platform with a bloody huge box containing Guitar Hero Metallica. Several downloads and a cheap copy of Rock Band later I've hit what I like to call the Bowie wall. I'm not so much playing Suffragette City on hard as blaggin my way through it and once its over, its not really over going into some absurd pattern that if played correctly would open a hell mouth and then fretboard is ripped away and Bowies laughter echoes from my surround sound speakers. This would be a very dark day indeed.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 comes with a little [big] surprise
UncleSpaggles replied to Coldkill's topic in Video Gaming
I had hair like that once. -
The 'flat' ending still hasn't be completely reconciled in my brainhole, maybe because my imagination is still trying to continue the story. One of the devices I thought worked well was the overlay of future images and past sounds and vice versa (such as Sam's voice saying "I'm going to go out and take a look" overlapping short scenes of him putting on his space suit, approaching his Lunar Rover). Then at the end

I really liked that It's certainly one of those films that the more I think about it the more I love it and agree that its strength was going off in its own direction, being able to free itself from the trappings the familiar setup may have put upon it. Bold stuff.

I went along to see Moon last week, it was the small screen at the Odeon in Covent Garden, but was great to see the screening had sold out. I'd unfortunately watched the trailer before hand, taken the bullet for the rest of my friends who I quickly warned, so came into it with certain expectations. Without giving too much away I imagined it was going to be one of those 'is this real or all in his mind' type movies and was a little disappointed by how straight the story played out. I think I would have preferred a touch more ambiguity in the end. Sam Rockwell was bloody fantastic though and the miniatures were great to see in film again.

I wonder if there is even the need to distinguish between PC, Console, Computer, Video, Handheld, Arcade, Pinball, Board, etc and I should just go with 'games'? Not that I've played a boardgame for ages - probably chess and that always felt lacking something since Star Wars ("Let the wookie win"). Maybe because these games are played on a TV in the same way videos were and Computer games are displayed on a monitor? A contact in Japan would often get excited when I'd mention what I was playing, she'd say "I forget you play TV Games"...Hmmm, think I'll stick with video games, especially now my girlfriend corrects people too...I've created a monster.
