Idle News Podblast - 08/01/09: Surprise
jneeriem replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I defiled a pig last night b/c of that and the podblast. -
This thread should be called the "hey you're new, spill your guts" thread. I'm 25, about to get divorced from my first marriage have a 20 month-old daughter I see bi-weekly and it all falling apart is generally the work of my own hands. But I find places like this idle distractions from the greater shittiness of it all. And when I see my daughter.

I demand a posting of the dicks podcast. I want to hear dicks. Also, I'd like a transcript of the EA conference call. Thanks. Oh have dinner ready when I get home tonight.

If this episode were any shorter I'd have to kill myself.

I'd like to throw out a half-sequiter and ask who here has the orange box for 360 and plays TF2 that way?
-
This is really where you should start. Will run on DOS. Was amazing. Had in-cockpit view, which took another 21 years to implement in other games. 61HHBCNc63E

Honestly, thanks for clearing it up. I didn't realize the AI part, though I do know that in GT the AI logic tends to just follow a given race line and pretty much doesn't do much else. Never did like that.

Ok so full disclosure, since I don't own a PS3 and am not close to buying one, I'll probably get Forza 3. And yes I know you can buy cars in Forza 2. But what I found with Gran Turismo was that if you were willing to put in the time to get good, to pass the license tests and to "learn" (gasp) the game never gets easier but it gets better. I'm kinda big into how in Gran Turismo 4 once I had the money I could amass my "ultimate garage" because with exceptions the Sony people collected alot of car models. I just don't see that same "realistic-car-collector" appeal in Forza. But maybe Forza 3 will come out with the unforgiving physics I love about GT4 and a gazillion cars and some challenge and amazing visuals and I'll never have a thought about buying a PS3 just to get GT5 (when/if it ever comes out) Or maybe I'll pine away in eternity for the Gran Turismo swan-song to be.
-
I think that while adding damage modeling sorta puts Forza 2 ahead of Gran Turismo 4, the actual physics of Gran Turismo and the actual car models are better. I was also always a fan of how Gran Turismo works the career system and how you can purchase cars versus the Forza system. I dunno. I could be totally wrong.
-
I've never been a fan of the Forza series. I was also never sold on the first Xbox and was a Gran Turismo gamer on the Playstation One and Two. When I got the 360 because I'm now sold on the idiocy of Sony, (sidebar) I tried but never got into the Forza games. I just didn't find them as good as Gran Turismo.

Agreed to 2 being the pinnacle. But I held, and still hold hope that a popular Mech Warrior game will be fucking amazing in multiplayer. That's what excites me.

Yes. Back when Mechwarrior 2 came out and I have the joystick for flight sims, this game repeatedly reminded me that there was a God. - Ign.com

Think of each robot as a customizable weapons platform. You have different projectiles and cooling options (yes heat is important) and armor options. So you have missiles, bullets, lasers and something called a PPC (which basically is a huge hot ball of plasma). You can install weapons that shoot these things in different sizes, and for the missiles, different ranges. Further you can install heat sinks on your "mech" which help deal with the heat generated by aforementioned weapons. This is important because even if you have the fucking awesomest layout in the world, if you overheat you shut down and become a lame fucking duck. Then you die. When you are customizing your loadout you are (or were) given specs as to the damage, range, heat, reload speed, etc on each weapon so you could sorta figure in your head how you need to cool off your mech. Also, environment affects heat. A hot sunny desser requires alot more heat sink installations in your mech then a frozen tundra. Ok and then there's armor. That helps you from dieing. Enough said on customizations? (I think so) There are more nuances, like installing things that allow the arms and legs to hold weapons (actuators) although I would guess things like that will go away. That's combat. Basically you find another "mech" and kill him. By whatever means necessary. Lighter mechs go faster but are less protected. Heavier mechs are more protected, carry more weapons but move slow. Jumping. Yes, some mechs have Jump Jets installed. Usually this was a customization. Some mechs are too heavy for jump jets and can't have them installed. Basically this adds to your maneuverability in combat and adds another dimension to the whole 'where the fuck did he go' equation. There's "clans" and stupid shit like that, but basically you get in a mech and you start going where you're told and you fucking kill that bastard in the other mech. The old mechwarriors used to be like playing flight sims, with full-fledged training and everything. I bet this new one will be more user friendly though...

I will quit the rest of my life to play some multiplayer Mw4

Because it was Commander Keen. Damn. I knew I should have fact-checked my memories!

I was a PC gamer from the dawn of Captain Keen and Descent and Wolfenstein 3-D until about 2005-2006ish. I still have a computer that I can use to play games on, but it became more convenient for me to just play my PS2, now XBOX 360 than to run my computer. Paired with having a laptop that doesn't run modern games anymore and a modded computer that has parts too advanced for its own good (Pre PCI-express). I'm pretty much a console gamer now. Though I probably would have always been a console gamer, but my mom didn't believe in video games on the TV (seriously). So instead I just spend my afternoons on an old dell 386 tower. That was cool, we had this batch script that ran and listed all the games on the computer. As a little kid, all I had to do was type 9 and wolfenstein came up. Or 5 and it was Humans. Then we upgraded to Win 3.1 and it was Sim City 2000. My mom still has that computer. It also still runs everything. Until I got out of college, every advance I needed to play the latest and greatest game was funded by bank a la mom. Once I got out of college though, my 2003 $2000 laptop could no longer run the graphics heavy games out there I wanted to play, and I was content with what my console could play. Then, more recently I priced out a new gaming computer vs. buying a 360. And still, when you have to fund your own upkeep the console starts to look good. I still wish I had my own gaming rig, and a dimly lit room to place said rig in. I miss console chat during battlefield 1942 and Unreal Tournament. I'm not all that satisfied with voice-chat. But I'm dealing, and I'm finding that I'm generally happy with my current choice.

The All New XBox Gamertag Exchange Thread!
jneeriem replied to ThunderPeel2001's topic in Multiplayer Networking
mfpantst I play Halo 3, Battlefield 1943, Unreal Tournament, TF2 and GTA4 on a regular basis on the 'ol 360. I'd love to have friends to play with (friendliness optional) and though the order above represents preferences, I'm totally willing to re-order if people are available to play something else. I want to pick up L4D, but it sounds like a lot of you all play it on the 'ol PC, which is a little out of my price range now (hardware). Add me up, I'll also add you guys and keep an eye out. Oh, I get home from work each day around 19:15 EST and log on soon after that. Wednesdays are an exception, and Fridays are going to be wide-open (ish) soon. I pretty much play until I get bored. That's about 23:00 EST. Sounds like a lot of you here are in another time zone, or get off work at weird times, or work is being on XBL... Anyhow though, if you are around and I get online and are interested in/actually playing something listed above, I'd be willing to play. Oh yes, I've been known to be stupid from time to time. Its part of making video games more fun than they were designed to be! -
Ok. I haven't really been on these forums before. But I have listened to the pods relatively faithfully before, but then I stopped. I think I started doing my job during the day. Gasp! So I've stopped that momentarily and also found this because of the ign.com twitter that I've been following linked to the original thread here. So here I am. I really just registered because I had some funny ideas and decided to add to what is a really huge pile of random things. Oh, Hi! I'm on-again-off-again with gaming. I'm actually probably casual in terms of skill and game choices but I really like to follow in on the culture of people who are "cool" in the gaming world. Ok. Bye!

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)
jneeriem replied to Wrestlevania's topic in Idle Banter
I recommend a disbanded DC area band called The Dismemberment Plan. Funny and good. Their lead vocalist went on to do a solo record that sorta kept up the funny stuff and is also worth checking out. -
