  1. Horror and surviving, but not survival horror

Surviving doesn't seem like much of a criteria, I've probably only played three games in my life that didn't involve surviving. That aside, the first Half-Life is the scariest game I've ever played. Head crabs teleporting everywhere, while I'm crawling in vents, now that's just spooky.
  2. Games with steep difficulty curves

What really makes Call of Duty 4 hard is because the mechanics and your squadmates make it seem as though you're supposed to stay behind cover and take out the bad guys at range, when constantly respawning enemies mean this is a sure way to a slow lingering death. If you really want to progress you have to rush forward heedlessly, since that's the only way to turn off the monster closets.
  3. Games with steep difficulty curves

I cannot agree about Trails HD I got to the level in hard with the metal spheres you have to ride across, and after more than a hundred tries I still hadn't progressed at all. Why can't this game just let me try the next level already.
  4. I heard that Mario Super Sluggers has a story mode that is very RPGish. No branching paths or steroids though.
  5. Disney to exploit the Marvel characters

  6. Disney to exploit the Marvel characters

I think that's the problem there, Marvel's winning formula is nothing more than frequent trips to their well of established IP, that well is not far from running dry, and that they're not doing anything to replenish it. Unless Marvel starts working to create successful new franchises it won't be long before they return to unprofitability and irrelevance.
  7. Powerless Wire

A lot of people use batteries to power their laptops, and not plugging in a computer, cell phone, or a car is a lot more convenient than having to plug it in. At only 50% efficiency it may not be a feasible technology now, but as research continues we can expect its efficiency to continue to increase.
  8. Better yet, WHISTLE STOP TOUR!
  9. So.. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Playing this game I found myself asking a Batman canon question; What does Poison Ivy's diet consist of? She values plants over human lives so she couldn't eat those, and if she were to eat meat that'd be facilitating the consumption of far more plants by animals.
  10. If everyone's so keen to show off their desktops maybe there should just be a thread for it.
  11. I don't remember a cover system, but I do know that Z had you collect and hold territory to acquire resources.
  12. (IGN.com)

    "A solid 8. 7/10" -IGN.com
  13. Non-video games

That sounds like fun, except the price is a bit steep. Can it play Elder Dragon Highlander?
  14. I won't be able to attend, Now I'm mad at geography.
  15. Non-video games

I used to play a ton of traditional games before (The Haunt on the House on the Hill, Catan, Munchkin) and during (Magic the Gathering, way too much Catan) grad school. I even made my own card game by post it noting new pictures and rules on top of magic cards (it played like a mix of Munchkin and Magic). However since then I haven't had anyone to play with .
  16. In most RTSs you decide which units to acquire, how to upgrade them, and build a supply chain that allows you to acquire and upgrade more units, that's a pretty important strategic element. Not that it matters, genre names have a tendency to drift away from the words that would seem to define them. For example Japanese role playing games very often involve no role playing whatsoever. Because the cover mechanic and the squad AI have spoiled me to the point where I can't stand how much less autonomous units in other RTSs are.
  17. Tactics would just be the use of given forces to meet combat objectives. Strategy involves the procurement and management of combat resources. In real life strategies take weeks, however in video games real time doesn't mean real time, it just means that players don't take turns. So the term real time strategy still applies to a game like Starcraft. Whereas real time tactics would apply to something like the battles in the Total War series (the rest of the game would of course be turn-based strategy) Maybe, On the plus side Company of Heroes is the most fun I've ever had with an RTS. On the minus side, I'm afraid it may have ruined me for Starcraft 2.
  18. Powerless Wire

Yeah we'd all be enslaved by electricity spewing robots by now, no thank you. I don't think battery manufacturers have much to fear from this. The distance we're seeing electricity being sent here is only across a stage, so batteries would still be necessary to operate anything you might want to take with you from room to room or out of the house. Battery manufacturers would still find a ready market for laptop, cell phone, and car batteries among others. About the only things I can think of that uses batteries now, that wouldn't need them with this device would be TV remotes and game controllers. That's not a huge chunk of the market when you consider all the money the battery companies could make producing these wireless power transformers themselves.
  19. Movie/TV recommendations

Yes I will definitely be looking forward to that.
  20. Sigh, I want to meet the Thumbs, but I don't live on the West coast and can't afford to make the trip out there. You guys need to go on tour, so the rest of your readers can get a chance to meet cha.
  21. Burn the Rope !!

Clearly it all has to do with the quality of the theme song. You really can't underestimate the value of something like that in this post-Portal world of ours.
  22. So.. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Mark Hamill played the Joker in Batman the Animated Series, for a good number of people (me included) he is the one true voice of the joker.
  23. Shadow Complex

If that's your problem then you have nothing to worry about. The bad guys ideology is never ever discussed in Shadow Complex, like I said before they're essentially Cobra. TenNapel's views are pretty obvious if you read most of his comics, they all seem pretty nuetral at the outset, but by the third act they tend to become these terrible religious allegories.
  24. Shadow Complex

They should have just used the GI Joe franchise since the bad guys in this are essentially Cobra. That actually reminded me a lot of Knytt Stories which is a collection of short metroidvania games all built around the same power ups, I really hope whatever DLC they make for shadow complex has more of these remixed campaigns, and that they mix things up more, like maybe giving you the hyper-run first and then saving grenades or even your gun until last.
