  1. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

Pretty sure I'm using the same Phoebus version. I'll have to leave it for a couple of weeks now though as I won't be able to get to my computer. I'll be visiting some Welsh fortresses while I'm away so I'll see if I can pick up any tips. Someone else have a go with the new files and I'll take my turn further down the road. Hope it works!
  2. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

I put it into the data/save folder then loaded up DF with all my other saves still in there. Then I started with a fresh version of DF and stuck it in there and still no luck. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I remember reading a mini FAQ about swapping saves on the Boatmurdered updates, so I'll dig through and see if I can find anything out.
  3. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

Just tried getting the download to work Murdoc. No luck I'm afraid. I unzipped both files then copied everything into one folder then stuck it in the dwarf fortress /data/save folder but it doesn't let me select it to continue with in the menu. I might be doing it wrong though...
  4. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

Dibs, do you want to have a go at getting it working again (or someone else)? I'm about to go on holiday at the end of the week and I don't think I'll have time to take my turn before I go away. Doesn't help that I blew all my spare time on Deathspank the past few days! Sorry for messing you all about. I'll be able to take my turn the following week though (from 2nd august onwards). It's sod's law; I've had all the time in the world recently and now everything is happening at once!
  5. DeathSpank

I played a load over the weekend and it's sucked me in. It took a while but the combat actually has a lot more to it than it first appears if a little limited in areas. I'm enjoying the various power ups and weapons but I haven't quite figured out the combo multiplier yet. The world's really nice and stylized and the music and look combined remind me a lot of Pyschonauts. The areas are pretty varied and so are the enemies (I'm currently battling Bearalopes and Kangamoos) and the quests are most of the time amusing in some way and on occasion laugh out loud funny. I thought Deathspanks voice and the whole cartoon feel might annoy me after a while but it's has actually grown on me. The adventure puzzle bits are nice too if slightly under-used. It's all a bit of silly fun really and just what I need after playing a bunch of more serious story-based games. One more thing in case people want to know: the Co-op feels a bit tacked on. It's OK if you think of it as a bonus addition (I didn't realise you could until it I got in the game) but there's no choice of weapons, armor or items etc for the 2nd player and it left my girlfriend feeling a bit left out as the main player has to do all the interactions. Not a major disaster but could have been better. I enjoyed the interview on Gamasutra as well, cheers Chris!
  6. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

Apologies, didn't get round to downloading the files over the weekend. I'm signed up to the box thing now though so I'll download the stuff as soon as I get back from work and see if I can get it going. Will report back later.
  7. Eurogamer Tim Schafer interview

I read about this on RPS this morning. I think the multiple games angle will be great for Double Fine, more stuff coming from them is a good thing. Even if Tim isn't getting to do much on the creative side for each one, the guys and gals they have there are also great folks (Scott C and Tasha Harris spring to mind). There was an blog post on Gamasutra on being Mindie which I think fits Double Fine quite nicely. It's about the gap between mainstream and indie. Also, I think Mr. Gaynor made a post on his blog about a similar thing a while back, but he called it single A games. I hope that kind of thing takes off because it's the only way I can see more varied content and experiences in games coming about.
  8. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

I'll give it a try tomorrow, will report back then.
  9. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

Too late for me, already read through the report. I think it makes sense to know what the previous ruler has done and set in motion though.
  10. I really like the Spelunky song from the first few levels: Good job really considering how many times I've travelled through those caves.
  11. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

Nice job Murdoc, looks like a solid start and an area with potential. I worry that my fortress management skills will be up to scratch come my turn though!
  12. Red Dead Redemption

I was gutted about my first horse loss (as I wrote here) and then soon after I found out they were pretty much expendable and I was a pretty disappointed. Whistling for your own horse to appear from nowhere was quite a cool feature. Ridiculous; but I could buy into it. being able to whistle for a new one after losing one felt wrong though. I'd rather have to lasso or steal a new one in the wilderness. To be fair I choose not to whistle now anyway but it broke a bit of the magic when I found out you can get one pretty much on demand. Also, I had a suicidal horse jump down from a cliff around Lake Don Julio. He jumped clear over my head, collapsed and rolled into the murky waters. I laughed.
  13. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

I just popped onto the forums to say I was going to get this thing started over the weekend but I'll let you go ahead now you're back Murdoc. Stick Fatcat MacMeadjaw in the original expedition team. I look forward to my reign of terror (or more likely, clumsiness).
  14. Neptune's Bountiful Pride

I finally got round to checking out the puffin galaxy since getting my connection back. Well done Dibs. I see my trusty co-commander A.I. Al wasn't completely wiped out and managed to hang on to 2 stars at least. I'm not sure I'd bother with another game. I was really up for it before hand but with my connection issues I lost interest and I'm not sure I could muster the excitement for another. Now I know what's involved, it's a bit too slow going for me I think.
  15. Red Dead Redemption

It's not dead yet! I'm still playing despite completing it a couple of weeks ago. Enjoying the new co-op missions that have been released and the multiplayer in general I'm finding myself going back to again and again of an evening. The other day, me and a couple of mates had a wander into the snowy forested area at night. Being hunted by cougars, bears, boars and wolves in the darkness was really tense and had a genuinely scary atmosphere to it. We had to watch each others backs pretty closely, paranoid of every sound (those damn near silent cougars are terrifying). We eventually went mad and met our ends trying to see how many throwing knives we could stick into each other without dying.
  16. Summer Steam Sale

Well, I succumbed: THQ pack mainly for DOW2:Chaos + Metro:2033. I probably won't even look at all the other stuff that came with that. Lead and Gold. It intrigued me back when it was released and at £3.50 how could I not? Another copy of Blood Bowl for my new netbook (it has no cd drive so I can't install/run the copy I already have on it). I'm 99% certain it'll run on low settings with it being a dual core/ion beast, it runs Stalker SoC after all. If not, I paid £8 for the privilege of not having to use the CD. Lastly I got Kings Bounty purely on Chris's enthusiasm on the podcast (and the cheap price). That'll be me sorted for the next couple of years then! I've only tried Lead & Gold so far and finding a game and lag are a bit of a problem. Server browsing isn't easy as you can't sort servers by ping or any other means for that matter and there haven't been too many available games when I've looked either. I've enjoyed the few games I've played so far though and I like the level design and visuals (despite their obvious heritage).
  17. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

Yeah, my forum name stands out a bit in that line up! Using the name generator as inspiration, how about... Fatcat MacMeadjaw. The name generator also provided me with Helmdoor Doorgold, which reminded me of the whole Jeff Goldblum thing.
  18. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

I'm still in. My internet has been down again all week (grrr) but I'm still around. I'd say just go for it Murdoc, start one up, play a year then let us know when your done. We can sort the order out in the mean-time. There was a list further up so we could go on from that. I like the idea of having us as the starting Dwarves. If you do it I'd be a woodcutter/military dwarf. Military for the down time once I've deforested everywhere. Chop! Chop! Let us know how it goes!
  19. Scott Pilgrim [video game]

I don't know anything about Scott Pilgrim but I think that trailer looks cool. I'm a sucker for the retro pixel look and sweet 2D animation. Having said that I'm not interested in playing it too much. I checked out the original comic afterwards as well and that doesn't do anything for me.
  20. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

I'm in too, got internet back at home now so I'm good for downloading etc.
  21. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

I only discovered that tile set as it was packaged with the 2010 version I downloaded. If it's just a hot key thing, you should be able to change them to whatever you want somehow. What version do you have btw? If it's the 2010 version that might be where your problems are, that tutorial is for the older 40d one and there's some significant changes to how some stuff works and more than likely what hot keys do. Checkout the Dwarf Fortress Wiki . I can't remember if it's been mentioned already but it's an essential bookmark for anything DF related. Sombre: I'm still reeling from how deep I had to go for farming. I've kept mining as a purely architectural activity so far! We should do this succession fort soon. Anyone willing to start? I'd be tempted to if no-one else takes it up.
  22. Red Dead Redemption

    Marek:
  23. Red Dead Redemption

Right, I've properly finished RDR now. I didn't even consider that I hadn't seen the credits screen yet. With regards to the I know you guy: On another note, I had an amusing moment in Mexico when after walking into town one of the Mexican Army dudes started shooting at me. I had no idea what I did to offend him so not wanting to kill him I hog tied him and left him on the veranda of the saloon (can't remember the places name, it's where the De Santa missions are). No other army guys came along and I didn't have a bounty on my head or anything so I calmly entered the empty saloon and proceeded to get drunk. The very moment I regained control after falling back off the bar, the shit hit the fan. There're now 4 guys in the bar all shooting at me and the Wanted sign and bounty appear. I drunkenly stumble around falling over chairs and tables trying to get to the nearest exit as bullet whiz past me (and through me) but I end up face down in an awkward heap in the doorway. I must be pretty drunk, because it won't let me get up for a good minute. Also I'm pretty near death. Lying in a doorway face down turns out to be pretty good cover though and when it finally lets me get up I've completely sobered up. I fought my way out of town and to the nearest train station to pardon myself. Even after reading the list of offences I can't figure out which one started it all, but the timing of the shoot out at my most drunk felt like a proper cowboy moment. I guess that Mexican Army dude just took a dislike to my foreign face.
  24. Dwarf Fortress: Succession Fort!

Yeah, I also use the phoebus tileset. I just can't handle the pure ASCII. It took me a few attempts before I 'got' Dwarf Fortress. I was always intrigued by what it was doing, but it was only when I discovered the tile sets I could actually stomach to sit down and learn it (I wouldn't say you play Dwarf Fortress). Also it's scary how quickly everything started to make sense. As everyone who plays it knows, it is definitely clunky to use, but it's not impossible. The guide Sombre linked to at the start is how I finally managed to crack it.
  25. Red Thumb Redemption

I gave the multiplayer a go for the first time last night and had a blast. I can see it getting old in co-op (fingers crossed the upcoming co-op pack fixes that though) but I thought the gang shootouts and capture the gold games were a lot of fun. Yeah, it's all a bit gears of war with cowboys, but I'm loving that! The start of the gang shootouts are hilarious too.
