  1. Yes! I was just about to make a post to plead for this.
  2. Eggcorns

When writing for the WizardJam, I had to look up if you "cut to the case" or "cut to the chase". I was wrong.
  3. Designer Notes 5: Daniel Cook

I just finished listening to this, a really good episode! Daniel is really good at talking about game design. He said one phrase I started thinking about, that didn't get mentioned again. "The aesthetics of systems". That set my mind racing, because I've never considered that systems can have aesthetics before. We're so trained that there's ART and then there's SCIENCE. Humanities or STEM. Left brain or right brain, etc. A game, more than other mediums, have the two sides interlocking so much, especially if there's anything procedurally generated. Yet it seems game studios also often have this invisible wall or tension between the programmers and engineers, and the artists, writers and designers. I started thinking about Threes as soon as the discussion went to Triple Town starting more complex with more combinations, and then getting boiled down. So I was glad to hear it mentioned later in the cast, and I would love to listen to one of these with Asher Vollmer.
  4. [Release] Cyperpunk Cop-Killer

Thanks! Yeah, that's precisely why I'm setting the game in Neo New England.
  5. [Release] Cyperpunk Cop-Killer

The police file on the main character/protagonist: Any suggestions for other info fields that is slightly creepy for a future dystopian cop computer to have?
  6. Not true! There's a download of Twine 2.0.4. It still runs in your browser, though.
  7. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Also, a really weird way to use the word "influenced". Is that gater shorthand for "used their feminine wiles to sneak SJW agenda into congress"?
  8. [Release] Cyperpunk Cop-Killer

Intro third is finished, but still contains the problems I outline above. I've also set up the structure for the middle, the investigation. Keep in mind all the outer nodes are still empty, to be filled out with case files, evidence or interrogations.
  9. Done! Suggestion: Maybe you keep track of how popular a certain hair is, so that you can tell the player if he agrees with the average or not, Walking Dead style?
  10. [Release] Cyperpunk Cop-Killer

Yeah, same here. I wanted to avoid the typical opening splash screen of exposition, and instead weave it in to the story. Of course, that means that each screen has got way too much text as I try to cram little world-building details in between the dialog. Also, it starts of really slow, so I'm gonna insert an action scene as the first screen, then title screen, then go to the intro I've written. Clyde, do you want to exchange games to critique each other once we have first drafts? Sounds like we both could use the perspective/red pen of someone else.
  11. Oh my god, "Ethnic Breckon" is sublime.
  12. Life

Yeah, having grown up on an island surrounded by mountains, landscapes as flat as Kansas seems unnerving to me.
  13. Voxn, that is absurdly good. About to start my entry, and already finding this very useful: Thanks for remembering to pass on the help!
  14. I have an idea for a game! It's one of the more obvious episode titles, but I can't resist making Cyberpunk Cop-Killer into a cyberpunk-noir murder mystery in Twine. I'm gonna write a synopsis and start learning how to Twine. Are there any recommended learning resources? Also, a narrative/IF question. I have several suspects in mind, and I wanna set up a Columbo-style wrap-up scene where the player points out who they think did it. Is it better to have: 1) One real murderer, ergo if the player picks everyone else, they get a "bad ending"? or 2) Whoever the player picks turns out to be the murderer? Avoids bad ending, but might weaken the narrative. I might go with the second one to force myself to write an equal amount of clues for each suspect. On the other hand, I don't want to bite of more than I can chew on the first project.
  15. Life

Imagine breaking up with someone by sitting down and saying "you're fired!" in your best Donald Trump.
  16. Other podcasts

You could try out Svampriket. They're kind of a Giant Bomb type gaming site in that they're personality driven and focus on video, podcasts, etc. If you're learning Swedish, Klartext is also great. The Swedish equivalent of BBC radio does a newscast in simple, slow-spoken Swedish, aimed at people learning the language.
  17. This is me too! Though easter is a bad timing. I will probably be able to hang around in the second half and do some feedback and/or light contribution.
  18. This is a great episode! I have multiple thoughts: I can't help but imagine Cara playing Real Life Gone Home by rooting through Steve's house, reading notes, and uncovering some kind of mystery. I would read this article. I just want to fill out one more important note of why Shadow of Mordor is secretly a dating sim: Each orc har their likes and dislikes, and in order to approach that orc you need to learn these likes and dislikes through gossip from other orcs. Like Gormongous, I also thought of Settlers as an example of where you start with a blank slate, but your city shape is largely determined by both the terrain and what resources are available where.
  19. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I've been thinking about this a lot since you tweeted a similar sentiment. People always talk about the "Video Game Industry", even though the word industry has had such negative connotations in the past. Like you say, it's so mechanical and sales-focused. By calling everything part of the "industry", you build up the GGer perspective that video games are Products, not weird art things, and that they should therefore appeal to the Average Consumer (the young white cis male, of course). Where does the industry end and the rest of the world begin? indie developers? games press? games writers in mainstream media? enthusiasts?
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I can't stop reading. I know there's no point in schadenfreude, and that it's tantamount to gossip, but it's so good. Here are some more choice quotes: [edit] And now some from the comments:
  21. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I started reading those Skype logs, and I was surprised to see that Owen was not on board with PUA bullshit. He definitely seems like the lesser of the two evils, especially with how quick Aurini with not only bossing him around, but also throwing him under the bus, including email Roosh and telling him to "go get him". I must admit, I got curious what Roosh had actually written about Norway and Denmark, so I googled it. Luckily, my work filter knew better: [edit] Man this Skype log is full of precious quotes, including "my girlfriend liked Rooshs article, so it's not misogynistic", and then this: I... Isn't that exactly what they're saying?
  22. Life

There is an interesting comparison to be made between using gendered pronouns in Real Life and using them here on the forum. Just like the situation described that started this situation, here on the forum it's not always clear what gender someone is and how you should address them. I remember replying to someone new who was ambiguous (Apple Cider, maybe?), and not knowing how to which pronoun to use. I ended up considering it, and then rephrasing so that I didn't have to use gender at all. Furthermore, almost everyone here has chosen their own display name. It would be so weird if I refused to call him "dibs" and insisted on calling him Christopher, because that's the name he was born with, damnit. Gendered pronouns shouldn't be any different. If you're close enough to someone to have a conversation with them that includes pronouns, then it shouldn't be that hard to adopt whatever they prefer.
  23. I haven't listened to the Molynuex part yet, but quick note about Besiege: Rather than Kerbal Medieval Programme, it compares much more closely to Banjo & Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. And that's a great thing. Anyways, carry on!
  24. An email I sent to Giantbomb

I think that the fact that this thread now has two and a half pages discussing potatoes, means that Dan Ryckert has officially won. [edit] And now posting at the same time as SAM boosted my post to exactly one new page.
