  1. Crosswords

I use an Android app called Shortyz (yes, I know). It's pretty good about presentation and UI, and pulls from a bunch of different sources, including NYTimes if you have a subscription. I usually do the LA Times ones as far as I can (usually I can do monday and most of tuesday), and then turn on show errors, even though I know I shouldn't. Like Toblix, I have issues with when they go to American athletes, senators, geology, and other culturally grounded stuff.
  2. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

    Amazing.
  3. Marketing an indie video game

Don't think so, but that site is about to go up in flames, unfortunately. I can send you a message once the new one is of the ground.
  4. Marketing an indie video game

From my very short time on the receiving end of these emails, I can tell you that just spending 5 extra minutes to actually include the name and website of the journalist/whatever in your email helps a lot. When a press release is written to be mass-blasted, it shows, and it makes me less interested than if I feel the developer have sought me out (which you have). Also, the smaller the site/blog/youtuber, the less of these requests the get, the more likely it is they will bite. It's very basic advice, but it's all I got.
  5. Life

In my experience, it's often more about selfishness than ideology. My girlfriend is from a catholic family in Brazil, and when they learned we're living together unmarried, the reaction wasn't "how can you betray our values?", it was "But what will people say?". The big deal isn't the deviation from the ideology, but rather about their precious societal standing, and how this "scandal" will affect them, nevermind you. Alternatively, there's the more guilt-trippy version of "what did we do wrong?", also a clever way to turn it around about them instead of you.

I think just about everyone here has used this thread as a ranting wall for things they can't talk freely about anywhere else, and that's exactly what it's for, so don't feel bad for doing it. I hope it works out for you! It breaks my heart to see family acting like that.
  7. Not funny and not youtube, but a great piece of filmmaking made using a GoPro, featuring some amazing first-person stunts: edit: he-hey, Vimeo integration, didn't even know we had that.
  8. Other podcasts

In case anyone doesn't know, the ALWW posters are made by Olly Moss from the recent UK episode of Idle Thumbs.
  9. Idle Thumbs Motorcycle Club

Sometimes I read this thread with all it's lingo and three letter acronyms, not understanding any of them, and i imagine this is what it's like to read gaming forums if you're not a gamer.
  10. I'm confused, why would you ever need more photos of Nick Breckon than this one? Congrats Nick!
  11. Man, I was all set to make a Photoshop of a Mass Effect cover as Regular Ordinary Space Cop, but nothing I could do would measure up to this majesty.
  12. PL4YST4TION 4

I'm not ready to declare the PS4, or even the conference, "best" or "worst" yet. They took their time to explain the core philosophy behind the box, and how it's constructed and controlled, and gave an early glimpse of new titles. Result is that I'm curious and interested, and will keep paying attention to see if they actually follow through or not. I'm kind of confused by people on Twitter exclaiming either that Sony is out of the race forever, or that they will get this thing Day 1, PlayStation Nation Woo! How do you know yet? PS: DRIVECLUB..
  13. So basically, SimCity plus a layer of Crusader Kings II? A council full of personalities, with political motivations based on their background, and you doing a crazy balancing act to try to appease everyone, and also the population? I might be way into that.
  14. The Idle Thumbs Wiki Urban Revitalization Project

I vaugely recall doing this important work on the Wiki: http://idlethumbs.wikia.com/wiki/Jeff_Goldblum
  15. Other enjoyable satirical names are Garfield's Veto the Dog, and McKinley's parrot; Washington Post. [Edit]: Woodrow Wilson owned a cat named "Puffins".

    Happy Chinese Dishonored New Years!
  17. Life

It's just a setting in your profile in this new board. You can change three times per month. I knew I would get you with that one.

I'm really excited about GDC, you guys. Also about sociology or something?
  19. Chicago

I would just go sightseeing for locations from the Blues Brothers.
  20. Plug your shit

I bought No Time to Explain just now, cause it was on the front page of Steam as a featured PC game. You are famous now. Edit: The background art of the Steam page is amazing, almost missed that.
  21. Far Cry 3

Tips & Tricks: If you're like me, you'd do everything you can on the first island, before moving on to the second one. But WAIT! by doing the mission that takes you across to the second island, you unlock the next tier of weapons, as well as a new traversal tool, that is Just Cause-ian in nature. Worth going through the story enough to get this stuff before going around cleaning up relics and missions.
  22. Things discussed on this episode: Adventure games, Monkey Island, game development, Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3, Games as art (exhibits) and the dichotomy of gameplay and narrative in games. Thumbs will be Thumbs.
  23. Far Cry 3

Just for reference, the boar icon faces the other way (left I think) from the pig, and can be found south of the starting area. Hunting/Crafting was fun, but there wasn't quite enough tiers for my taste. I'm still on the first half of the island, and I have most things fully upgraded. Then again, Being able to carry even more things would be ridiculous. Maybe I wish the upgrade requirements were harder? But that would be frustrating too.
  24. Far Cry 3

So I`d been stalking around an area for a while, looking for buffalo. I kept running out of ammo, and some buffalo leather would make a splendid addition to the evergrowing quilt that is my ammo pouch. I finally spot some in the distance, next to a crossroads, so I zoom in with my camera, making sure to mark them all, then sneak down the hill, compound bow at the ready. I get down there, and line up my shot on the closest one. "Finally." Just as I draw my arrow back, I hear the SCREEE of car brakes right behind me. "Oh fu-BLAM My view is instantly on the ground, and stays there for a moment before it fades to black. It's not a perfect little narrative like some annectdoes, but I enjoy that I can I be wiped out by a freak mishap or by being taken off guard, just as sudden as when I snuff out a random pirate in the jungle, or watch one get mauled by a tiger.
