Idle Thumbs 145: Rich Uncle, Cool Uncle
Hermie replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Just had an epic Threes run destroyed by an accidental swipe. =( If that six on the left had gone the right way (up), I could have basically added all the numbers up and upgraded the biggest one even more, potentially doubling my score. But, I broke top 100 on the all time leaderboard, so still fairly happy about it. Ok, carry on with the actual discussion now. -
I quite like this idea, but what's wrong with just calling it Idle Thumbs?

Idle Thumbs 145: Rich Uncle, Cool Uncle

For me, and it sounds like for Chris, this is exactly the same loop as Threes. There's exactly enough skill involved that you think "I can improve, I have a new tactic I want to try out, if only I try to achieve this pattern" etc. Yet there's enough randomization that when you lose, your brain says "damn, I got unlucky in the draw this time. The next round will treat me better, then I can beat my score." I can't imagine the amount of playtesting and fine-tuning required to reach that point. Another game that catches you in the same pattern is Drop7, that Chris also fell victim to as I recall. -
Let's all rally together and make sure one of the top tags of Gone Home is "ghost game".

He just put a thing on their blog explaining the challenge of programming his way to the right interaction the spear gun does with the environment, quite interesting: http://blog.camposanto.com/post/72000676790/from-the-desk-of-will-armstrong -
I used to be an IRC Wizard many years ago, let me see what I remember. You basically need to have registered your nick on the server, and register the channel to that nick. Any other ops or admins must also have a registered nick, so that the server recognizes the person.

Are any of these public in any way?

Yeah, I'm kinda giddy. Sucks to be half the globe away and have to wait for San Fransisco to catch up to the fact that it's Tuesday.

Sean has said that he has used Twine to prototype dialogue trees for the game, but I think that's it. -

You are correct! I also remember it being one of the first episodes with Sean on them, so looked it up through the great annotations on the youtube channel. It's actually from the very first Sean episode, GDC 2010: Phaedrus 2010, and the story isn't about Far Cry 2 at all, but Fallout 3! Sent in from a reader because they talked about S.T.A.L.K.E.R stories. Link to the youtube timestamp:

Absolutely agree with this. You can control your message, but you can never control the interpretation, so why not be on the safe side and say nice things?

My email got read! Looking forward to playing with more Dota Today Toads. (PS Sean I would love to help out in the guild/Steam group even though I suck at the game itself.) Hey, I have a lot of fun watching the GB streams and your solo streams! If you wanna fill your time and sharpening your skill with amateur game making, there's a thread here for you.

Yup, episode 31, The Future of Games. (The first episode I listened to! You never forget your first.)

Obligatory: Hope Cabot pulls through! He's basically the Idle Forums mascot at this point.

That layout looks good, and I agree with Ben. In fact, you could probably easily crowdsource this to the forum. Another idea would be to go more personal with it. What inspired you to make art for this particular adventure game? Why this scene or this character?

Gran Sequino.

I think Tycho's Nick has been perfectly timed, they knew something was up from the thread title, but this should temper expectations just enough so that the mind explosion is all the bigger for the last batch.

Oof, that's a though one. My first instinct would be the first one, because stability is great, and the second one sounds like it could take a mental toll on you if you get overworked. On the other hand, if the second one has the chance to give you days off here and there, it might give you more time to pursue creative projects? That's what I like the least about my current job, that I don't have the spare time or energy to do side things.

Keep that story with you. Clutch it tight to your chest, and when everything feels like it's going to shit, and everyone is angry at you, remember it, and know that it isn't your fault. I have a collection of emails like that, where they say stuff like "this is the best customer experience I've had!", and when I feel down, I go in and look at them, and feel better. We recently won a prize for something where I'm the only one doing it full time, so it feels good to have concerete evidence that I do a good job. When a customer complains to me about how we're the worst company since the inception of man, I know he's just being a jerktool. (The downside are the snooty people that, as soon as we make a mistake, say "aren't you supposed to be Norway's best customer service..?", expecting me to hand them a wad of cash for their trouble.)
