Idle Thumbs 139: Happy News Year
mikemariano replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Jake's assonance/consonance/alliteration riff was genius, absolute genius. I love hearing Jake's mind at work. -

Neato! Wait, does that character have a headlamp in the game? Does she still have to carry a torch during the darkened levels?

Idle Thumbs 138: A Christmas Blast

Merry Christmas Jake! Merry Christmas to all of you! -
I purchased and started playing this game last night.

Hey, there's a new Steam sale and a new set of cards, so I'm addicted again. This time the Snow Globe cards evaporate just after the new year, so buy and craft now! Or sell now! I checked one of the unique items created from these badges (the Slime Priest skin for Realm of the Mad God) and saw it was selling for only 7 cents. The cards were selling for 50+ cents at the same time, so it's possible to put down five dollars and get nothing in return. Meanwhile, I sold a Snow Globe Sale card and used it to buy cards to create the Steam Summer Sale badge. Those cards didn't go up in value, which is probably why Valve is expiring the cards from this sale. Anyway, if anyone wants to trade and feed my stupid card habit, I'm michaeljmariano on Steam.

I was there, too! I've returned there a few times because my local library doesn't take used books, but the Center for Fiction does. I wonder if it's still around; I haven't gotten an event e-mail in a while...

I've been hacking my way through this thread and it's wild to learn much more is in this game. I didn't even know there was a basement! But, roleplaying as Katie, I don't think I'm compelled to answer all those questions. I'm worried about Sam, and I can break into locked rooms and file cabinets after the game is over.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
mikemariano replied to posh_somme's topic in Video Gaming
This is good to hear. This game and Wind Waker were the Zelda games in which I felt combat was most varied and fun. But now I guess I have to improve my skills! And it's also cool to hear that Hero Mode offers (only slightly?) new content. I'll have to replay it maybe sooner rather than later... -
The game that I spent the most time with this year was Shadowrun Returns. The main campaign was decent, and I am having lots of fun with the user-created missions. It's very much a pen-and-paper-inspired guided RPG, but it's built in a way where it's fun to try out different classes and abilities.

I beat this game a few hours ago. I have a few questions. And story-wise:
-
I beat Gone Home—the game for which I bought a new laptop—this morning. I spent $25.39 per minute playing this game!

Wow, Valve has finally achieved the lowest possible start-to-crate time.

Wild Speculation - Fullbright's next game is...
mikemariano replied to Bjorn's topic in Video Gaming
Wait, awesome bald guy actors James Rebhorn and Miguel Ferrer are in this? They'd better be in the game, too! And Steve is an excellent choice to bring another lost aspect of the 90s back to life. -
I think we've finally passed the point where there are more episodes about Nick Breckon than episodes that feature Nick Breckon. Either way, it will be fun to hear him guest star on a Terminal 7 podcast. Also, the 2D cracks between worlds in A Link Between Worlds only show up because of the actions of the evil painting dude; no architect planned them! And I can't hate the art style because it gave us the cutest Dampé in the Zelda series!

Such an exaggeration. No one has ever smiled like that or held a controller like that playing a Final Fantasy game, even when Chocobo Racing. Zeus, I'm another FF hater, but if you got good experiences out of the series, that's fine. Final Fantasy V, VI, and Chrono Trigger were fun for me because I felt like the mechanics retained a meaningful relationship with the stories. I only played the PC demos of VII and VIII, but combat just took up so much time for no reason I could make sense of. But in this thread we're here for the adventure of it! Maybe that's enough.

Wild Speculation - Fullbright's next game is...
mikemariano replied to Bjorn's topic in Video Gaming
Who announces first: Fullbright or Campo Santo? -
I forgot about Snoopy Flying Ace, an Xbox 360 exclusive multiplayer dogfighting game. I thought the demo was fun [EDIT: No I didn't.], and the full game entertained Sean Vanaman with decent dogfights and aerial tricks. EDIT: Just did a quick Twitter search to see two former top Snoopy Flying Ace players reminiscing about the game and how empty the game is now.

I beat The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds on the train ride home tonight. It was a cute game! Though I wonder if I'll ever find that fourth bottle...

Looking through the games Wikipedia claims are Xbox 360 exclusives, the only one I think was unique enough to be essential is 1 vs. 100. A massively multiplayer game show! It made good use of the Xbox Avatars, and even though most players were just a glorified play-at-home audience shouting at their televisions, it was a unique experience that made it seem like Xbox Live had a lot of versatility to it. Then Microsoft cancelled it because they couldn't paste enough ads on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGpCcZoXqGU

I'm not done listening to the episode yet, but I would love it if you streamed Super Mario TI-86.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
mikemariano replied to posh_somme's topic in Video Gaming
I purchased a 3DS XL solely for the three games you mentioned. I can't tell you it's a wise decision, but you certainly wouldn't be alone. A Link Between Worlds brings back some of the joy of combat that I haven't felt since Wind Waker. It's really easy to run around whacking everybody with the sword, but with so many items accessible and easily used, I have stunned soldiers with the most random items before going in for the kill. The game is different enough from A Link to the Past where you might get annoyed by some of the differences, though. The very last moment of A Link to the Past tells us that the Master Sword sleeps again...forever. SPOILER: It doesn't.
