  1. The threat of Watch Dogs

It's not that it's bad, it's just boring. It's exactly what you'd expect from a modern day big budget video game, no more, no less. I played a few hours of it. I could play some more and I would probably be reasonably entertained for the duration of that time, or I could never play it again and I wouldn't miss it. It's just sort of there.
  2. I Had A Random Thought...

I'm irrationally annoyed by people using the term "RNG" all the time. This seems to have exploded over the last year or two, at least on the corners of the internet where I lurk. I don't know if it's due to the rise of roguelike-like-ish games or what, but it feels like everyone suddenly became aware of the concept of a random number generator and then got really excited about shoehorning it into every conversation about games. I think the part that really bugs me is that it's always abbreviated even on the first mention.
  3. The threat of Watch Dogs

A lot of those complaints are pretty ridiculous, but the trains coming to a dead stop when you move in front of them is a huge bummer. Why even have an open world if you can't smash trains into cars?
  4. Pikmin 3

I got frustrated with the final boss and stopped there. Is it worth going back to?

  7. General Video Game Deals Thread

I didn't get $2.24's worth of enjoyment out of it, but I seem to be in the minority.
  8. Batmazement: Knightly Man Bruce

    It's not a tumor!
  9. Uplay

My graphics card came with a code for a free copy of Watch Dogs but I have to install Uplay to get it. Why is life so terrible.
  10. Licensed Novel of Games

I read the first Doom novel when I was a kid. I don't remember much about it except that the pinky demon didn't seem very accurate to the game, and at one point a woman tells the protagonist something like, "As much as I like looking at your... manly chest, we should probably find some clothes." (It is implied that "manly chest" is a euphemism for "enormous penis.") I also read the Super Mario World choose your own adventure book "Dinosaur Dilemma." It wasn't great.
  11. I'm pretty sure he dressed as the Phantom of the Opera.
  12. Other podcasts

I think it sucks. Congrats Vinny. Fuck Vinny.
  13. Nintendo is really on a roll with the slogans lately.
  14. Plug your shit

I was lead cinematic artist for the episode of Walking Dead Season Two that just came out. It was my first time being in an official lead role on a game. It would be cool if people bought and played it and, ideally, didn't hate it.

    Too late.
  16. QUILTBAG Thread of Flagrant Homoeroticism

I think that Nintendo is a Japanese company and this isn't something that would inspire significant outcry in Japan, so they probably just didn't put much thought into it when the game was first developed. Nintendo of America could have changed it during localization, but that would look (for all the Fox Newses out there) like they were actively promoting gay marriage. By not changing it, they didn't have to spend the resources to make the change, and they can just throw up their hands when people complain about it because that's how it was in the Japanese version. I think it certainly would have been a better game if they had changed it, but I'm not at all surprised that they didn't. It definitely seems safer from a business standpoint to do what they did and get a little bit of reasonable backlash from progressives than to go the other way and get what would probably be a much larger and more vitriolic backlash from bigots.

  18. Getting into PC gaming

Stupid followup question: how do I actually get Windows installed on this thing? I don't want to buy a DVD drive just to install Windows and then never use again. But I haven't been able to find a way to just download Windows onto a USB stick. You can apparently buy a DVD and dump the ISO, but can I just bypass the disc entirely?
  19. Getting into PC gaming

I have a 23" (I think) Apple Cinema Display. Keyboard is a Saitek Cyborg which I mostly just bought because it was funny, and I use a Kensington Slimblade trackball.
  20. Slightly off-topic, but if you thought Towns looked cool and then were disappointed by what it actually was, I recommend checking out Gnomoria. It's the first Dwarf Fortress-like that I found accessible enough to actually play.
  21. Getting into PC gaming

I think I want to build a PC that can run games somewhat decently. But it's been over a decade since the last time I built one and I don't really know what I'm doing anymore. After consulting a thread on Somethingawful I came up with this parts list: Does that seem adequate? I'm not super picky about cranking up every graphics setting, as long as I can get a consistent frame rate. I also don't tend to play a lot of super-demanding AAA kind of stuff anyway. I don't care about overclocking. And I don't want to spend more than $1200 (U.S.). (I'm currently playing games on a 2009 MacBook Pro, so I would like it to at least be an improvement over that.)
  22. I edited video professionally for several years, but I used Avid, which I don't think has a consumer-level version anymore. I haven't tried Premiere, but I've used Adobe After Effects lot and I hate it. I've never even heard of the Sony thing. I guess that wasn't very useful. But I'd say if you're planning on doing professional work down the line, I'd go with Premiere just because there's a better chance of its being used elsewhere. Honestly all video editing software has pretty much the same features (at least as far as things you will actually ever use), so it's just down to which interface you prefer.
  23. I don't have time for it anymore either.
