  1. VALVe money grab #134: Autumn Sale

I ended up going with the Train Simulator 2013 Thanksgiving Special Pack instead. Is there somewhere that you can just see everything that's on sale? I was manually browsing the "simulation" genre and saw a bunch of sales that weren't shown on the main splash page.

Guys, Farming Simulator 2013 is 50% off and I'm deeply tempted. I need help
  3. Breaking Bad

Tuco is in power because of his family connections to the cartel. I don't think it was ever really implied that he's particularly good at it. I don't want to give anything away, but a lot of your complaints are addressed in later seasons. (That said, Breaking Bad is a much less realistic show than The Wire.)
  4. The Walking Dead

That sucks. It should be these:

I think technically they would own any game I make while I'm working for them. Not that I expect to make any money off text adventures, but it could probably be seen as a conflict of interest of some sort. I don't know if anyone would actually care, but I don't really want to test it. (Also, what brkl said. Even though the process of writing a text adventure is pretty different from what I do at work, the prospect of making games in my spare time is still less exciting when I've just come home from making games all day at work.)
  9. Life

I entered a text adventure I wrote earlier this year into the latest IFComp. The voting just finished and it ended up placing 15th out of 28. The game, though silly, has a lot of personal significance for me, and I'm a little bummed that people didn't like it more. On the other hand, there isn't really anything I'd change about it. So I guess by my own standards I should consider it a success? I dunno. It just sucks to put a lot of work and time and emotional energy into a project that means something to you and get it into a state where you think it's pretty good, only to have the internet turn around and go "meh, 5/10." Anyway, now that I work for an adventure game company, that's probably the end of my writing text adventures as a hobby. So that was a fun ride, I guess.
  10. The experiences that Sean and Jake described with stealth games are pretty much exactly what happened to me with Deus Ex. I really wanted to actually be stealthy because I felt like that was the whole point, but I would always fuck it up in some way where it wasn't clear to me what I had done wrong. Then I had a choice between reloading in the hopes that whatever it was wouldn't happen the next time, or just giving up and grudgingly blasting my way through (although even that was difficult because I'd been focusing on non-lethal upgrades). It's really weird that even in games that allow you not to kill anyone, murdering everyone on sight is still almost always the path of least resistance. Also, I grew up in Mississippi and I definitely knew kids who called levels "boards," but it always confused me too. Everyone's moms called controllers "paddles," and NES Game PaksTM were "Nintendo tapes."
  11. Polygon (internet website)

I agree. There's not a single comment on that article that I would personally consider even close to deletion-worthy, so knowing that several of them were deleted makes me distrust that website. You can put up a "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone" sign in your business, but that doesn't make you immune to criticism if you do it without a good reason.
  12. Polygon (internet website)

It's certainly a good excuse for deleting a comment that makes a point you don't want expressed.
  13. Polygon (internet website)

All the comments that were hidden were reinstated and then the thread was locked. You can see them all on the current version of the article. They all seem like pretty reasonable criticisms to me. The tone is sometimes not very polite, but there's clearly nothing "horrific and bigoted."
  14. Life

I really like that first joke.
  15. The Walking Dead

To be honest, that doesn't bother me as much as the tapes being inserted into the camcorder facing the wrong way.
  16. The Walking Dead

Oh man! I completely agree; that triangle drives me up the wall. I thought I was the only one. I didn't notice it until after the game had shipped, but now I can't not see it.
  17. Oh man, I'm so pleased to finally find out how old that guy's daughter was. I'd been hanging off that cliff ever since whatever episode that was was first released.
  18. Blog advice

While that is true, it's also pretty easy to ignore all that and use Tumblr as a regular blog where you just publish stuff and don't worry about what other Tumblr users are doing. You still get a nice, customizable front end with an RSS feed and a pretty good interface for posting stuff, and you can use your own domain with it. The downsides are that if you have a problem with other Tumblr users "liking" and "reblogging" your posts, I don't know if there's a way to disable that. And there's no real comment system unless you use Disqus, so people just tend to reblog things and then tack on their own comments at the end and it becomes a big mess that's somehow even worse than Twitter replies. BUT, if all you want to do is post things so that people can read them, I'd say Tumblr is pretty good.
  19. Disney buys Lucasfilm

I don't have any objection to him giving the money to charity, but I strongly take issue with this statement. He threw some money that he doesn't need at a problem. The idea that this is somehow more valuable than the combined contributions of every teacher, doctor, social worker, civil servant, volunteer, and everyone else who's dedicated decades of their lives to work that directly benefits thousands of people is absurd and insulting.
  20. Movie/TV recommendations

You forgot Kindergarten Cop and Jingle All the Way.
  21. XCOM Enemy Unknown

Is it possible for aliens to trigger my overwatch during their free movement? I.e., if I set all but one of my dudes to overwatch, move the remaining dude forward, and discover a cluster of aliens, will those aliens get shot by my overwatch dudes on that same turn if they cross their lines of sight?
