I never did manage to catch a char. My town layout makes it really hard to catch anything at the ocean waterfall, or even see if there's anything there to catch. I had another great experience with Club Tortimer, though. I went to the international island and was paired up with a random Japanese girl who didn't speak much English. She pointed out the tropical vista that was on sale as a "rare item," and when I didn't have the 100 medals for it, she just bought it for me. We played around on the island catching beetles for a little while and did a couple of tours, and due to the language barrier we communicated primarily through Dr. Shrunk emotions. It was really cool and made me feel good about both humanity and video games.

Interactive Fiction/Text Adventures (and their engines)
shammack replied to Ben X's topic in Video Gaming
Inform is great. If you're just doing a CYOA-style game, you may not need a text parser, but if you do, I believe Inform is the only one of the things mentioned that can actually handle that. Standard IF stuff like rooms, navigation, inventory, and most of the common verbs are already built in, so it's really easy to get a basic game up and running. If you want to do weirder stuff, it gets a little trickier because you have to work around Inform 7's weird pseudo-English syntax (although if you're more comfortable with traditional programming languages you can always just use Inform 6), but it's pretty powerful and flexible once you figure out how to tell it what you want it to do. I haven't been at all impressed with what I've seen of Twine or ChoiceScript, but I guess it depends on the project.- 61 replies

Oh man, when you get the Dream Suite, check out 2800-1439-3680. People can make some pretty amazing stuff in this game. It makes me ashamed of my house which is just a bunch of random crap thrown all over the floor.
-
I finished building the Dream Suite yesterday. If anybody wants to check out my town, the dream address is 5400-2158-3541. It's not a particularly exciting town at this point, though. There seems to be some sort of bug or server problem with the Dream Suite such that if I tell the tapir to pick a random town for me, it always fails and tells me I have an unstable internet connection. But it works fine if I specify an address or search by region and just pick one from the list arbitrarily. I'm stoked because Bob, one of my favorite animals from my town in the Gamecube game, showed up in my campsite today and I managed to convince him to move in through a game of high-stakes charades (if I'd lost, he would have taken my watering can). He's the second villager I've obtained through the campsite, which is cool. I was afraid I might only be able to get one that way, but it looks like you can do it as many times as you want as long as there's an open slot. And Peaches, the horse with the creepy eyes, announced that she's moving out, so I just have to shun her until the 27th and then maybe I'll have a shot at getting Tangy.

I have the same problem. I've donated half the bug and fish encyclopedia already, plus every fossil I've found, including completing the T-rex, and two genuine paintings, and talked to Blathers every day since the 9th, but I still don't have that option yet. It might just be a thing where you have to have the Nookling shop upgraded for a certain amount of time first or something like that. I haven't seen anybody give a definitive, specific answer for how to unlock this.

Weird! I wonder how that happened? I thought fruit trees could grow basically anywhere in this one as long as there was an open space on all sides. In the U.S., Nintendo is doing a promotion where you can take your 3DS to a Best Buy and download some DLC furniture. But it turns out that if you can't/don't want to go to a Best Buy, you can just temporarily change your wifi SSID name to Bestbuy (case sensitive) with no encryption and download it that way. I tried it yesterday and it worked (though it didn't just automatically connect; I had to create a Bestbuy network profile in my 3DS settings). I don't know if it would care if you try to connect from outside the country, but it's worth a shot if you want to get a raccoon wall clock. I had a villager who had announced a few days ago that she was going to move out on the 20th, and I said I was OK with that because I want to keep rotating out a few of my villagers until I end up with Tangy and/or Bob. But then I made the mistake of talking to her again yesterday, and even though I told her "good luck" when she mentioned moving again, she changed her mind and decided not to move out after all. So I guess the moral of the story is that if somebody says they're going to move out, don't try to enjoy their company for those last few days; just shun them until they're actually gone. Also, last night I dreamed that my 3DS charger was damaged and I was distraught that I would miss a few days of Animal Crossing while I waited for Nintendo to ship me a new one. I was hugely relieved when I woke up and my charger was fine. This game is consuming my life.

It's basically matchmaking for the island multiplayer. When you talk to Kapp'n at the dock, you'll have the option of your regular island or Club Tortimer. If you choose Club Tortimer, you'll go to a different island with at least one other random person (either from within your region or worldwide) so you can play minigames and stuff in multiplayer even if none of your friends are around. You also get a different island every time (I think), so there might be different stuff available to buy, and you get more medals for beating the minigames.

There have never been multiple skin colors unless you count getting a tan on the island.

It's been raining all day in my town, so I've just been hanging out and fishing, trying to catch some rare fish. It seems like rain has much less of an effect on fishing than it used to; I'm still getting stuck with mostly sea/black bass. I got one arowana, but no sign of any arapaima or coelacanth yet. As far as profits go, it seems much more worthwhile to spend my time on the island... but I want those "fossil" fish for my museum!
-
I already have hero's clothes too. But I'll bring the cap over, maybe there's something else you could give me for it.
-
Aww man, I had the boots, but I just traded them away to a colleague for a Fire Bar yesterday. I did get an extra "hero's cap" (Link hat) today though, if anyone needs that (traded!). I also traded away my Metroid for a Triforce and 50,000 Bells, but now I kind of regret it. I finished my latest community project (a third bridge) and I'm not sure which one I should do next. I really want to build either the museum shop or the dream suite, but neither option has unlocked for me yet, and I'm worried that they might not while I have another project ongoing. I'm intrigued by the Reset Surveillance Center, but it's pretty expensive. And some villager asked for a torch, but I don't really want one, but I'm considering building one anyway in the hopes that somebody will request something else afterwards. Maybe I'll just focus on expanding my house for now.

Does anybody know any details about how to use the ores/gems/whatever you call them for furniture customization? I heard that that's what they're for, so I've been hoarding them and waiting for the guy to wake up. But now that I've got him, the only one he's expressed any interest in is the gold nugget (he said if I gave him three of those and 10,000 bells, he'd make some gold furniture. But I only have one, so...). I can't show him any of the other ones, and when I give him furniture to customize, I haven't seen any options related to ores.

They're pretty rare. Normal spiders sometimes hang from trees after you shake them. The tarantula I just found crawling on the ground around 9 or 10 PM. I've only seen one of each of them so far.

Some highlights from my adventures:
-
Whoa, what's that huge fish on the far left in the museum picture? I haven't seen one of those yet. My town is rockin' along pretty nicely. The gardening shop opened yesterday, and today the sleeping guy in Re-Tail woke up, allowing me to customize my furniture. I haven't really figured out how that works yet, but I've got him modifying my common bed to turn it purple. And I just got a second story on my house. I built a campsite and convinced a robot frog to move in, which is pretty cool, but now I'm having second thoughts because I really want to get Tangy or Bob in my town and I don't know if I'll be able to do that once I've already used up my campsite move-in. If you want to make quick cash, I highly recommend going to the island at night/early morning and catching some exotic beetles. If you fill the island storage box with stag beetles of various kinds, you can easily make over 100,000 bells per trip. (Just ignore the fruit beetles and wharf roaches; they're worthless.)
-
Yeah, I was a little disappointed by that. There is still flavor text for every item if you go into the museum and look at the plaques after you've donated it, but it's not written in Blathers's voice, so it's a lot less amusing. I've heard that .

Hey, I streetpassed you once too (probably the same way). When I started working at Telltale I usually only got two or three streetpasses a day from coworkers, but now that we're in a new office and I'm closer to QA, plus a bunch of other people have got 3DSes, I consistently hit the 10-tags-at-a-time limit. I wish they'd raise/get rid of that. The streetpass feature in Animal Crossing is pretty great. It's fun to be able to check in on my colleagues' interior decorating every day.

I bought an extra net if anyone wants it. Is there really no way to just send mail to one of your friends without being in their town? That's irritating. I guess I'm just going to leave my gate open for a while; feel free to drop in if you need a net. I want oranges too.
-
I don't think you have me registered. I added your code from the other thread and it's showing you as a "provisionally registered friend." Mine is in the post above.

I want apples. I have peaches, and I've planted some cherries but they haven't sprouted yet. Also, if anybody has an extra fishing rod, I could use one. It hasn't appeared in my shop yet. Here's my info: Friend code: 0387-8790-2867 Mii name: Crouton Animal Crossing character: Scott Town: Formica Native fruit: Peaches

Is there a different licensing agreement that's more relevant to the discussion? As far as I'm aware, the EULA is the only time a consumer will ever see any mention of the idea that they're licensing the software rather than buying it. When you go to a store or load up the Xbox marketplace or whatever, I'm pretty sure you'll see terms like "buy" and "sale" all over the place. I doubt most people buying games are even aware that there's a distinction, and even fewer will actually read the licensing agreement (which you agree is questionably enforceable anyway). If you're renting a house or leasing a car, you have the ability to negotiate the contract before you ever hand over any money, and both of those examples are cases where you're making multiple payments over a period of time. Consumer software is marketed the same way as physical goods where you pay x amount of money once in exchange for ownership of the product, but that's not actually what you're getting (if the EULA is enforceable, which it may not be). At best, it's misleading, if not actually illegal. There's thousands of years of precedent for buying and selling stuff working a certain way, and no obvious reason that software should work any differently, unless you happen to pay close attention to U.S. computer and intellectual property law, so I don't think it's unreasonable for a person being sold a piece of software to expect that they'll own it.
-
Except that you're typically not given an opportunity to agree to, decline, or even read the licensing agreement until after you've already given them your money.

This is such an absurd idea. I know that legally that's the way they claim it is but I can't believe people are so willing to go along with it. It makes me hate everything.
