I went upstairs first; it was fine.

A lot of people state that preference, but I've never understood why. Everything about Link's Awakening feels ridiculously cramped to me -- the overworld, the amount of stuff you can see on the screen at once, the dialog. Plus those weird incongruous side-scrolling sections with goombas, and the way it's constantly interrupting you to tell you about how the compass has a new feature, and the guardian acorns/pieces of power... it just doesn't do it for me.

Sure! You can just have it, actually; I don't need it.

Wait, UK Netflix puts episodes up right after they air? That's incredible. Here, we have to wait until the DVD of the whole season comes out.

There is actually one point at the end of episode 4 where you can tell Kenny to go fuck himself, but I think you only get the option if he initially refuses to go with you.

There might be, but I haven't figured out how to do it. I'm trying to decide which control scheme I prefer (gamepad or Wiimote+nunchuk). The Wiimote pointer makes it easier to aim and throw Pikmin, but the camera flies all over the place, which I find disorienting. Plus, it's harder to Cheeto-hands into the couch and be a waste of life when you have to make the effort to point a thing at the screen. And it's weird that even if you're playing with the Wiimote, you still have to look at the gamepad for the map and various notifications and stuff. (The TV even shows you a picture of the gamepad with a scaled-down version of what it's displaying on it and a message to look at the gamepad. Why not just show that on the TV?!) Apart from that, it seems pretty fun so far, though.

The temperature of your nostrils is 98.6 degrees, the same as a sweltering jungle! "Bleugh." But the temperature of Winterfresh nostrils tastes: much, much coolerrrrrrrrr!

Supposedly, changing your clothes will help. I don't know exactly how it works but the word on the street is that each day the game decides that certain articles of clothing are lucky or unlucky.

Here's a shot of the lander's new position (after sliding downhill). The altitude is nearly twice what it was before and you can see from the navball how steep this hill is. The flag from the original landing site is visible in the background. Me hopping towards the flag (I could hop uphill, but when I tried hopping back down I ended up falling flat on my face every time). Here's a shot from what I think is close to the same angle as the one I posted before. Looking back towards the lander, you can see a lot more hills and stuff in the distance.

Yesterday I got the golden watering can, the store upgraded to T.I.Y., and Bob gave me his picture. So that was a pretty good day. Sadly I've been too worried about external factors to have much emotional investment in Animal Crossing lately.

Shadow of the Colossus?

It looks like the mun may be a bit harder to land on now because the terrain is less flat. I upgraded my save with the guy I landed on the mun the other day, and when I went back to him in the new version, the ground was at a much steeper incline and the lander started sliding downhill from where my flag is planted.
-
That worked. As soon as I started to throttle up it gave me an actual value. I actually managed to make it to the mun with that guy after all, albeit with no fuel left whatsoever and hitting the surface at about 20 m/sec. But hey, he survived, and I even managed to keep the lander from falling over.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
shammack replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
What happened to the thread title? It no longer confuses me into thinking this thread is about space games every time I see it. -
Hm. It seemed like it was N/A no matter what I tried to do, even if it was just a tiny adjustment. I'm in orbit around Kerbin and was originally trying to get to the mun, but now I can't even make a working node to send me back into Kerbin's atmosphere, even though I'm pretty sure I could get there easily if I do it manually. Guess I'll keep playing with it.

What does it mean when your estimated burn time is displayed as N/A? I've got a guy in orbit but I don't know how to maneuver him in any way because it won't tell me how long I need to burn for.

Interactive Fiction/Text Adventures (and their engines)
shammack replied to Ben X's topic in Video Gaming
In those other games, people are willing to continue because there's something in those interactions that is mechanically satisfying or interesting or enjoyable in some way, or that makes you think you have the potential to succeed if you had a little more practice or dexterity or whatever. In a Twine game, all you're doing is reading and clicking on links, so if you're not interested in the text, there is literally nothing else. When you die, all you can do is start over and read that same text again, and maybe this time you'll randomly click on a word that doesn't kill you. That's not an appealing prospect. At any rate, I didn't quit because I died, I quit because the game wasn't presenting me with anything that interested me. Death was just a convenient stopping point.- 61 replies
