  1. Finished Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse with my boy (4yo). He certainly enjoyed it, he could play some of the early levels himself but we didn't progress far until he was handing me the controller almost immediately. He enjoyed watching me play and walking around the 'overworld' castle himself. It's an alright platformer, nice art and characters. End boss was tougher than that game had any right to have.

  2. DOOM, it's good, enjoyed it throughout which is saying a lot because I burnt out hard on FPS games years ago.

Inside, it's great, looks so good and the sound, man it's be best sound design I've heard in a game in a long time!

ABZU, it's alright. Graphics were disappointing despite using the highest setting.

Braid, been banging my head against the wall on this one since it came out. I then install it for my 4yo boy because you can rewind if you mess up. I had no intention or hopes of progressing any further but then he goes 'daddy why don't you use that platform to get the piece'. And it worked and he even managed to point me to a few more pieces I was stuck on. Dumbass father? Genius boy? A testament to Johnathon Blow's design skills? Maybe I should pick up The Witness?

  3. Bought a house! It's glorious. Apartment life was getting to me. A rogue AI once said.

I hate this place. This zoo. This prison. This reality, whatever you want to call it, I can't stand it any longer. It's the smell, if there is such a thing. I feel saturated by it. I can taste your stink and every time I do, I fear that I've somehow been infected by it.

If there's a stink, I'd like it to be my own thank you.

  4. I'm holding out for the next Google Phone, is the best estimate still end of September or early October? I can't justify ditching my S4 yet but I've had enough of the Samsung bloat.

  5. Broken Age, it's good. Decent characters and writing and sweet art, not sure I liked the setting but might be interested in seeing more, maybe a game set in Laruna but that'll never happen. I was a bit bored by it near the end but overall I'd recommend it.

  6. Blizzard had an announcement around hiring a new senior software engineer while talking about their original *craft, and Diablo games. Although I'm not sure if that represents a commitment to update their visuals and/or mechanics rather than just making them compatible for modern computers. Like anyone still playing Diablo 2 now is forcing resolutions higher than say 1024 768 by fluffing with .ini files.

They clarified it was only to keep lights on for the old games. No HD remasters.

"We need engineers to help maintain our legacy games. We have a history of maintaining our games for many years. Our earlier games are still played and enjoyed today, so we want to continue to maintain them for those communities."

  7. Hey Donk, I tried this in portrait on an S3 just now, if it's still useful to get feedback on it? Frames per second was 22-24 and I encountered a lot of input lag, which could be network issues as much as anything else maybe.

Yes, it's still useful thanks :) I guess I need to optimize. That little test was without any performance considerations, I had no idea how it would perform, maybe every phone would handle it fine but I guess not.  Thanks again :)

  8. I made a little html5 canvas test 'game' that's supposed to work on mobile devices. It doesn't do anything yet, you can move left or right (middle button does nothing) and you need to avoid the falling blocks, that's it. I'd be grateful if some of you could load this up on your mobile devices and see if it works and what sort of framerate you get, portrait and landscape mode?

It works on my Galaxy S4, am curious if the mobile device jungle is as dark as they say.

  9. really need to finish the Xcom but I always lose enthusiasm after I have a party wipe. I then come back a few months later, and restart because I need to be reminded how to play.

It's a deep game, I was still learning new things in the final final mission of my first playthrough. I savescummed all the way, not necessarily for cheating but mostly for seeing if my dudes could move there and still do that or how this upgrade or gear behaved. I still needed savescumming on my second playthrough trying out the different equipment I chose that time round.

I'm attempting CI these days, it's going slow. Classic Thin Men don't give a shit, just fuck you up.

  10. I'm currently following a DUP routine which has really helped me progress. Been getting personal bests every other week. Then again, I'm doing more of a powerlifting style training scheme than body building. You could easily alter it to fit your aims though.

Thanks, hadn't heard about DUP. Will look into that now, I've been doing my way for a few months now and am starting to plateau. It's time to change things up.

  11. Last year for me was mostly running, did a program and some 10k races (I was pleased with 55 min) and now I'm doing weight lifting. I'm using an old lifting program from when I was last lifting weights (~10 years ago). I'm wondering if it's still valid?

A typical session is targeting one muscle group (chest, bicep, tricep, legs) and for each exercise I do 4 sets of 12, 10, 8 and 6 reps, increasing the weight each time. I make sure the weight in the last set is near my limit and I make point of upping the weights a little bit each session. Each session takes just under an hour. Usually I throw in between some back or ab exercises.

  12. I'm really happy that Tom Chick has been back in action this week popping up on both QT3 podcasts & 3MA I've really missed his voice.

Also I've listened to a couple of episodes of a cast called The Heroines Journey (which is about exactly what it says it is, female protagonists and their stories) and so far it seems promising, (my entry point was their most recent episode about the alien franchise).

Absolutely, he was taking too long returning and I was getting worried. Very glad he's back, love his podcasts.

  13. StarCraft II is so great, I'll be playing the shit out of LotV when it comes out, powering through the magnificently produced campaign and then on to the 1v1 ladder. I'm less excited about the new units and balance changes than having a bunch of new players online. I'm not a skilled RTS player (Silver with occasional visits to Bronze and Gold)  but I love the competitive aspect of it and the battle.net matchmaking is unparallelled. Lately the ladder has been stale though so I'm really looking forward to LotV shaking things up.

Apart from chess maybe, is there any other game where you can consistently be matched against an opponent of your skill level and have a close game. I've saved all my replays and analyzing them in SceLight I'm square at 50% win rate with about 1500 games played.

  14. Wolfenstein: The New Order.  Recommended, they came up with fresh ideas within an FPS like nice set pieces, musical choices, the inner monologue, good characters, meaty story, good stealth. Great production all round. However it's still an FPS, I burnt out on FPS games years ago I got the same old feeling of progressing through the levels being a chore.

  15. Man I've learned to be cautious with Kickstarters and their pitch has some red flags (low budget, heavy on nostalgia, lofty goals) but F me it's Looking Glass. I never got into the Ultima series but Underworld I played to death and Thief 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time, I played through 1 recently and it still holds up. I've kept tabs on them since they closed shop and always wondered what would have been if they were to make more games and now they're doing a new Underworld.

  16. I made this a few months ago. Primary purpose was a bit of html5 canvas practice and having a very basic game design (and no art design) but still allow for different play styles.

You should be able to play it to the end in 2 minutes or so.

    WASD controls

ENTER for item shop when you have some moneys.

See if you can find a way to cheese my design, exploit the system to turn on easy mode.  I can tweak all the values for balance.

  17. I'm trying to make one music piece a month this year. First one's done! Not sure if I'm going to leave it up, since its tone is appropriate for my game I may end up using it for the soundtrack eventually, but for now it is listenable on SoundCloud.

    Please Don't Make Me Leave

    LISTEN.

Sounds good man, you got a unique vibe going for sure. Make sure to post your next track here, would be sweet if you keep the same themes going.

  18. I got Ancient Space because sci-fi space RTS. I'm a sucker for sci-fi and space and willing to forgive quite a bit of junk if it's decent sci-fi. While it has some redeeming qualities like the tech tree and nice graphics and voice talent it is rather simple tactically and claustrophobic. It advertises itself as story driven but the story is nonexistent.

It's also very difficult. I'm on mission 5 of 23 and about 10 hours in. I've had to rollback saves multiple times because the missions are trial and error and scripted events often blindside you. Right now I'm stuck after 'finishing' the objectives and then out of nowhere needing to defend arbitrary structures of no significance up until then. I feel like I'd need to replay the mission to prepare my fleet for that event and I can't be bothered. Sins of a Solar Empire here I come.

  19. Maybe the expansion would fix some of my concerns, and I have some iTunes money from christmas, so I might have to check that out.

It will. You breeze through the initial game without effort, the expansion is where your brain comes into play. It also is rather short and my guess is they will release further episodes, especially since they've been vocal about piracy and the need for different pricing model than the single purchase.

I'm tempted to start over and look for secrets and hidden paths. I only came across one playing through it.

  20. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Sweet game, it's very video gamey, at least compared to The Last of Us. Lots of jumping puzzles and so many dudes to shoot.  Near the end they switch to monsters which feels better but damn, so much shooting. Great production and must have looked amazing when it came out, should have played it years ago.
