  1. MechWarrior 4 re-released for free

Thanks for the heads up on this! I'm going to have to bust out my CH Flightstick Pro!
  2. I always wondered why Big Bird's right hand didn't move... I thought maybe he'd had a stroke. This illustration puts me at ease in regard to his level of wellness.
  3. PCs and Consoles and Clouds... Oh My!

Great thread, Zomboid! This is the how my gaming history worked itself out: Arcades --> Intellivision --> Master System --> Genesis --> PC --> Dreamcast --> Xbox/Gamecube --> PS3/Wii. I was a PC-only gamer from 93 to 99. In 93 alone it seemed there was a ton of great PC game releases! That was the year I bought a Soundblaster card and "Day of the Tentacle" which was my first PC game. During the next several years I spent a lot of money on graphics cards & motherboard/processor combos. I distinctly recall losing interest in PC gaming around the time the first Unreal came out. It wasn't that I didn't want to play the new era of super duper 3D games I just grew tired of constantly having to upgrade. The Dreamcast got me back into console gaming and was probably my all-time favorite console. The first Xbox seemed like the Dreamcast's spiritual successor so I went that route with a Gamecube on the side. These days I'm gaming on the PS3 & Wii with a little PC gaming thrown in. I've wanted a 360 since launch but I'm still waiting until they work out the RROD thing. I just can't spend three or four hundred dollars on a system I'll most likely have to send in for repairs. To me it's the principle of the thing. Day of the Tentacle, X-Wing, Ultima Underworld 2, X-COM: UFO Defense, Sam & Max Hit the Road, Privateer, Syndicate, Space Hulk, Doom, Lands of Lore, Master of Orion... what an amazing year 1993 was for PC gaming!
  4. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Today I bought a used copy of Living Colour's "Time's Up" CD for ninety-seven cents! Released in 1990, this is their second studio album which contained "Type", "Elvis Is Dead", "Solace of You" and "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" just to name a few.
  5. Cyborg Contest: You choose!

Nappi's work is like an artistic countdown to tears.
  6. It drives me slightly mad when games do that for a final boss or last level. I'm all for a challenge but don't ditch the core mechanic just to make it "bossy". Just let me use the skills I've honed throughout the game.
  7. Books, books, books...

Right now I'm reading "My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey" by Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D. It's an amazing true story about Bolte's experience of having a massive hemorrhagic stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. The book recounts her stroke experience in detail, her full recovery and the insights she gained. On YouTube there's a Bolte gave at the TED conference in Montery, CA in February 2008. Fascinating stuff.
  8. Agreed. Don't we have enough podcasts where people act like they're on a serious talk show? That fact that the guys on Idle Thumbs are having so much fun is one of the things that makes it fun to listen to.
  9. New people: Read this, say hi.

    I like Star Wars.
  10. New people: Read this, say hi.

Hi. I like Cheetos and video games.
  11. Life

omg, this thing is going to take over my life! Thanks for the link!!
  12. Point-and-Click Adventure Games, Today.

Full Throttle... man I loved that game! Everything about it was just perfect. The atmosphere, art, story, characters, puzzles, everything! OK, now I need to go play it.
  13. Another great show! Kudos to Idle Thumbs for reading negative feedback mail. I haven't heard very many podcasts that do that. I just wanted to chime in and share my two cents on this "Chris talks too much" thing. To me there's a specific method to the madness of Idle Thumbs that makes it work. I see Chris as the ringleader/facilitator/conversation starter, Jake as the trustworthy source if insane comic relief mixed with "tell it like it is" commentary and Nick as the brilliant, insightful straight man who manages to be hilarious at the same time. By the way, Nick's commentary on Civ 4 a show or two ago was epic. To me it's this blend of personalities that makes Idle Thumbs what it is. I'd hate to see the guys (I'm typing at you, Chris!) second guess themselves or hold back on something they wanted to say because they were concerned they were "talking too much" or taking up too much time on the show. Maybe it was just my imagination but I thought I sensed some of this after Chris read that email (probably just my imagination). Can things improve? Sure they can. Should Nick and Jake get more time to talk? Absolutely! But let it be a natural, gradual thing. Don't worry about it. You guys are doing the best damn gaming podcast out there and I mean that from the bottom of my Cheeto-encrusted heart valves (wow, that sounds really weird). :::praise cap off::: ~Cheetohands
  14. Point-and-Click Adventure Games, Today.

"The hidden killer feature of this collection is the save state system. You can pause any game and save multiple versions of it to the hard drive and then load those save states instantly. You never have to mess with passwords or save points and you can flip between games as fast of popping out a cartridge. Then the next time you play that game you can start exactly where you left off." Source: 8Bitjoystick.com
  15. Point-and-Click Adventure Games, Today.

The demo allowed you to play time-limited versions Space Harrier, Sonic 3 and Streets of Rage 3. That might have been the real problem--being disappointed with a demo of three games I didn't care for when I owned the system. Now that I think about it spending $30.00 to get Phantasy Star II, Dynamite Headdy, and Comix Zone is a pretty good deal.
  16. Point-and-Click Adventure Games, Today.

I still enjoy point and click adventure games but I've had a very similar reaction to other old games, especially the compilation discs like Intellivision Lives, Midway Arcade Classics, etc. I was a huge fan of the Master System and Genesis back when they were popular so I was thinking about buying "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" for PS3. I downloaded the demo on PSN, played a few games and changed my mind. For me these old games were a very important part of what has turned out to be a life-long gaming hobby but part of me is wondering if I should just let them stay in the past where my memories keep them special.
  17. New "old-school" LucasArts game announced tomorrow

I'm about to get on the nostalgia train and buy Fate of Atlantis. l loved this game back in the day. Has anyone purchased it on Steam? Does it run well? Any technical glitches?
  18. My frothing demand for Idle Thumbs 34 is about to be satisfied!
  19. Panzer Dragoon Orta and Otogi.
  20. The Beatles Game

After I got around to buying RB2 and GHWT my first question was "will I ever be able to buy Beatles tracks?" I never expected there to be a whole game based around their music. Aerosmith sure, Metallica? Why not. Bon Jovi? Wouldn't surprise me. But the Beatles!? The fuggin' Beatles!? I never would have expected it and I can't wait. Their music is so meaningful for me personally and so far beyond everything else out there, especially Sgt. Pepper's (one of my favorite albums of all time). I can't wait!
  21. The last song you got stuck in your head.

For me it was the main theme from .

  23. Today is the day I force myself to play FarCry2.

Far Cry 2 is definitely on my "get it when it's 20 bucks" list.
  24. Dear Chris, Nick and Jake: This week I spent Monday through Wednesday at home sick as a fuggin' dog with the flu. Thanks to the symptom crushing power of Theraflu I wasn't able to do much more than play Fallout 3 and Oblivion until the point where I thought going on one more side quest was going to make me want to run a hot bath and open a fat vein. Despairing of my life I decided to peruse GAF where I stumbled upon a thread that mentioned the Idle Thumbs podcast. Not knowing anything about the history of Idle Thumbs or the people involved---other than the fact that they weren't ex 1Up staff due to the dates in their podcast archive---I said to my sick self, "Self, what the hell--why don't you download a couple shows and see what these people have to say?" Over the next eight hours I repeatedly laughed so hard I thought my congested head was going to explode like a super mutants after a point-blank, sawed-off shotgun VAT attack. But nothing could prepare me for the gut-busting experience that is podcast 8. About 30 minutes into the show the whole "Tony Hawk Skateboard controller/Wii players sinking into the couch thing" had me laughing so damn hard the shock to my system actually broke my flu! Yes, I was the recipient of a true Christmas miracle in March. Then, just when I thought I couldn't take any more Chris' "Sincerely These Nutts" ditty had me literally curled up on my living room floor in a feverish, tear-soaked, pile of hysterical bliss. I never thought I'd find a podcast where people who are so passionate about gaming and have so much to say would say what they have to say in a way that never takes this crazy hobby too seriously. Thank you Idle Thumbs. Sincerely, Cheetohands
