  2. Impressions from playing Portal

You could argue that it's strength comes from being short but hey... If it was twice as long, it would definitely have to be something more, adding depth, adding content, developping and so, not just basically twice as much distance to cover. Really, to me it was a shame that you couldn't check an option "glue the 3 HL2 episodes together and play through them all in continuity."
  3. Need Survival Horror recommendations

Recently had a hand on Deadly Creatures on the wii, pretty neat piece and very original... Definitely survival definitely horrible
  4. Impressions from playing Portal

pure example: if portal had been twice as long, it would have been definitely perfect.

Anyway this cake is great it's so delicious and moist, but there's no sense etc... Thread about to turn into random pics thread, warning !
  6. I'm Getting the Sickness

I think you all know this anecdote: when people saw the first movie ever made by the Lumiere brothers, which represented a train runing at full speed towards the camera, they all crouched under their seats in fear that it will crush them, all in all, we are the global image society, we see crazy fucking shit happening all the time on youtube, it debases the actually sensational, but does it affect our life outside the screen ? On the short term and for now I would answer no. Violent video games don't make people violent and seing people having their heads crushed and blown in every possible way in videos movies pictures games didn't suffice to restrain me from vomiting my guts off when I saw a guy split in two by a truck in the middle of the streets of Paris, just like that, a few feet apart were his chest and his legs most horrible thing of my life, seeing that on TV ? wouldn't break a sweat and would probably laugh my ass off cutting a guy in two with a chainsaw in any video game. I would not know why, I just see it: people around me play like hell and are not violent, and not immune to the horror of seeing blood spilled of the macadam. On the black humor note, you'd think hearing you that without the internet, there was no black humor, but hey, Desproges, french comedian wrote this sketch, out of the war. ahJFsjjipTc
  7. From gamers with love...

Hey, I don't really know if it's fair to advertise my shit around here but hey... It's better than posting shitty youtube videos with Ronald Mc Donalds jerking around... Or is it ? So here it is: a friend and I just started a little thingy called Bons Baisers d'un Gamer (From gamers with love hence the title) which is sadly in french (hey, i could make subtitles when I have time) but if any of you understands french, I'd be very happy to hear your impressions because I value your opinion (mainly Mareks "eeer prrr" on the video games industry). Bons Baisers d'un Gamer Episode 1: les règles dans le jeu vidéo If you don't speak french at all there might be a little thingy you'd understand: there are three words in english and two names you might recognize in the "thanks" part of the ending sequence.
  8. Had me thinking back to the whole "players get what they deserve" thing: "I love short games, I love call of duty, give me more of that" Well the easy way is to take that litteraly and make another one, a sequel wheras talking about actually good long games, you'd have a hard time making a sequel in my opinion
  9. From gamers with love...

Oh fuck I could not understand a word I'm sorry, what were you saying ?
  10. If you don't like completing levels, how will you get to level 17 to complete your destiny and reach the apogee of tears ?
  11. Link, watch out ! Short does not mean bad, it means not long enough, yes, I and you and everybody I guess prefers good games, the question is, would you rather have a call of Duty lasting 6 hours or 26 ? Because it does seem obvious that the reason call of Duty can be such a strong experience is that every other second there is a scripted event that is to say an new authored content to be shown. So that makes the experience twice as strong, the question being then: would you rather have longer levels in CoD4, like twice as long, twice as many enemies, with longer segments? Instead of just passing through a hangar you just go through 2 of them, instead of getting through 2 storage compartments in the boat you go all the way through 4 of them etc... To me it was unnecessary to have such a huge density of authored content and not to trust the player to be something, too much direction makes the game stronger as in "more movie and less gaming". To me it's a fault of CoD even if it does make the game stronger, it's pushing games towards hollywood: you live a game that lasts a handful of hours but is really strong rather than taking the time to live the story by yourself. Spectate or play ?
  12. Thing is, SOME experiences are mostly suited to short term pleasure, but if you are just looking for the pleasure of completion, then you'd be logically looking for shorter games, but you'd have to admit that if a game can suck you up for 30 hours, then this game has the potency to make you cry or laugh or anything because it's long. Instantaneous short term games make me feel like it's just in and out feeling, you just taste a bit of pleasure and then switch to something else, I'm more of a long term relation guy with games where passion turns into something longer
  13. [youtube] now exists

It's a bit slow but quite awesome I have to say... What about embeding a flash game ?
  14. Short games need to be raped and sent to the purgatory in repentance for their sins against mankind... I can't begin to describe how pained I am when I payed 70 FUCKING EUROS and get 8 hours worth of gameplay... Remember a few years ago when the game industry used to brag about "hey, at least we're fucking less expansive than the movie industry" and nowdays, even at a stunning 10 FUCKING EUROS a movie ticket, you're better off seeing 7 movies of 2 hours than buying a aweful lot of the game that come out...
  15. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

So just like that ? IZXARU_3rYY
  16. [youtube] now exists

Could you hack steam so that we could embed games into the forum, I'd start a [steam ]DoW2[ /steam ]
  17. You know what? This thread makes me sad every single time I go back to it, it reminds me that I liked MisterBig and was about to cast my vote, and looked to see what the votes where, an I got so fucking depressed that I spent 3 hours on a bot that nobody likes that I casted a vote at my own entry... If that isn't the sadest thing you ever heard... But hey, I'm a douche, can't really fight it.
  18. Bafta Game Awards 2009

It won the "best rubric for games award" , "best getting through space" and "best use of a plumber" though, which you'll admit is already something
  19. Saw that one the other day looked pretty sweet, kind of reminds me of auditorium which was totally awesome and fucking hard... If you're into that kinda shit you'd better check dat out nword. http://www.playauditorium.com/
  20. I fucking hate that games nowdays are like "an incredible 12 hours of gaming" and you're like... Yeah you better make that infuckingcredile to the power of ten because for me to buy a 12 hours game that will last me 4 days... Anyway, games being easier and shorter, I guess that's reason enough for devs to turn to downloadable games... The occasion market is raped in the ass by downloadable content.
  21. Fable 3 leak

Woops again for double posting on el signore's thread
  22. Are Game Reviewers Too Kind to AAA Games?

Fun is just one manner to enjoy something, which is what leads some people to enjoy horror movies, people say it's fun but that is definitely not how you feel when you're scared to shit playing Eternal Darkness, you're just captivated or motivated to fight your own fear, but fun is straight out of the equation... What you get when you play is enjoyment, entertainment, and in that can be a zillion things and amongst them, in the lower end of the spectrum there is fun. My exact feelings.
  23. Are Game Reviewers Too Kind to AAA Games?

I was kind of expecting you to make a stand against game notations but I guess that'll do
  24. Are Game Reviewers Too Kind to AAA Games?

Talking about KZ 2 the whole paragraph, just read my message again and though to myself "you have expressed the contrary of what you thought for the 100th time in your life, happy douche birthday" No I really liked Crysis, I was talking about detaching myself from what I expect from a game in a review: same thing one valve, I felt the bragged the hell out of HL2 being THE game that'll kill them all and this assumption being so broad that I hated that game when I played the first few minutes of it and I now have played it somewhere around 20 times...
  25. Are Game Reviewers Too Kind to AAA Games?

I found it very interesting that you mention Crysis and not Killzone 2 because that is THE game where I had this impression: ok, super graphs, oh god it's a thrill to play such a beautiful game and then you analyze it and find it's in fact a guilty pleasure: the game leaks unoriginality by every pore of this so well textured skin as well as a lot of other faults that in the long term had me really mad at that game. IGN.comTo go back on the scoring thing, fun cannot be in the score. I'm sorry for the "I want my funfunfun and funny fun" gamers that Chris mentioned a few pods ago but fun is an irrelevant value when it comes to scoring. If a game is nothing but fun then games are not art they are just a few bits of you escaping reallity for 2 hours by having a good time. And that is the very exact reason I think why Eurogamer's FEAR2 and KZ2 reviews are so different: because one guy from the KZ2 review could not refrain himself from putting his excitement over the graphics and watching the trailer 200 times into consideration when he scored it. While in FEAR 2, either he had a zen motivation and could but his score down or he just hated to be so frightened by the game. And I would not say any better, I literally hated RE1 because the game got me peeing on myself for 10 fucking hours straight but hey, I hate it, it's a greame (great+game) after all, no matter how much I hate it, it'll still be a genre starter and super balanced game. And of course you can't go so far away from fun because it's what makes you play, the vector through which everything passes, but if you focus on the rest, appart from the fun, you're pointing out things in the game that are relevant. Spore being the example, some people underscored it for its DRM, some people overscored it for the fun of it, but I guess it deserved a 5 or 6 outa 10 or something like that because it did not follow the design decisions to the end putting to much of the easy access bullshit into consideration and wasting a lot of resources player's attention on thing that were not in any way related to your specie's evolution. So yeah, going back to video games and scoring, I feel it's relevant to score because you CAN definitely put every game onto a common ground which is, what you take out of them, except for fun which is de-facto a personal judgmental shit.
