GDC! Idle Thumbs Conf Grenade: A Fish Called Xtreme
OssK replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
On that note, it does no mean that it's still true but remember, you used to earn point, to be rewarded for driving over pedestrians, which is quite antithetic to making you feel guilty. -
Marek, that is not what one does when he meets people he never saw, it is highly improper to propose to defecate in reunion to strangers.

Well... If trying to hump you makes you rich, I can help you... * DING * you just earned a penny, way to go ! On a more serious note: I agree, I think when you feel in danger, It'll anyway trigger a reaction of some sort, danger being, suffering or being submitted to a treatment you don't want... Any reaction really, maybe she... wanted it to happen ? Yeah, I know, when I say that I position myself on the "she had it coming, I could see her ankles underneath her skirt !" side of the coin but hey... To go back to the original question, yes, I am a Rapist °o°

Again: if I don't know anything about cooking or architecture, if I make a comment on "Hey, you sure this will stand? It does look to me like it'll fall at the first wind" Dismissing my comment on the sole ground that I am ignorant does not make it less accurate, but as Jake remarked very nicely: it makes you a douche, either because you can't solve the problem that a idiot proposed, or because you are not able to explain to me why I'm wrong. I would admit that he did not ask this, he just said that game are not able to generate emotion on a game specific ground, which makes HIM quite a douche to throw a comment like that without having any knowledge about video games, but he was not the first to formulate it, I came across a debate between two dudes dating from the mid 80's which mentioned that capability, I'll post it if I can find it again but I think it was in french anyway. So no, it's not HIS comment anymore it's a question we, game likers and games makers should ask ourself. Not if it's true or not, but look in our brain to explain the emotion we know we lived with games. -

I knew that one with "those that can't become teachers, and those that can't become teachers become sport teachers" I always find it funny even if it's completely unfair Making something that is static (as in a script that will always be there not a still picture) is not the same as letting something happen. When you look at a movie, at a book or at a painting, you can indeed have influence on the form, but not on the content, it would be fallacious to compare pausing a movie and controling the pacing of a game, the exact mediation of this action in games is pausing the game, which is, you would agree, not the same as stopping to look around or letting the enemies come and go. In a video game, the argument revolves around can what you let happen be the vector of emotion, story and as such, art. Can interaction be art as in: 1)Video Games are a set of rules in which the player can interact and create events that constitute or live through a story. (you would need to narrow this definition to exclude video toys as wiimusic or spore) 2)The player creates events, interacts with the game through the information loop: the player acts the world reacts the player rereacts and so on... 3)Everything that is game specific is the exchange between the player and the game, the rest, music, scenes, 3D, graphics, characters, storytelling, is non game specific. 4)You would then reformulate the question in: "How can what is game specific generate emotion and/or melt itself so well with the rest that you can interact with what is non-game-specific that it would surely generate emotion". That question is pretty much answered by Passage, Braid and others cited above in my point of view and the real debate would then be: can you mediate those feelings into a bigger game, into a longer game, into for instance... DANTE'S INFERNO, YOU'LL CRY... IN HELL !!! -

That's what I said to a friend last time, because from an authorial point of view, as a game designer I can't help but think that way. He however, states that interactivity is what makes games unique in the sense that even if the authors know the milestones, they cannot predict with a 100% chance that a player is not going to go backwards or kill innocents; and even though you have encoded a restricted number of behaviors, the number of times I as a player interact with them, cross them, mess with them and what I take from them is not under your control, you can only predict so much... And beyond that limit is where the game lives. Kind of like a baby There is part of what you want it to be, and part of what he will grow up to be. (shitty metaphor spotted) -

Not sure about that, he may not know a thing and randomly say what he said, why should we consider his background if what he said was actually valid... Ebert raised a point, and even if it was a sentence randomly generated by a Roboger Cybert, a cyborg version of Ebert, it would still be quite a valid point in the actual conjuncture... -

What Game would you pick to prove that you can convey story or emotion without story ? I guess a lot of people would pick Braid, Passage or Gravitation or Marriage but these picks effectively reduce the spectrum to such a degree of what an actual gamart can be that it leads most people to, as you mentioned Jake, call them "art-games" and dismiss them with the argument "yeah but those are art games, pieces of interaction that narrow the field of gaming to a 2D platformer with a bunch of interaction". That's pretty much what you said Marek and this is what I saw too: we gaming afficionados do not have to think a single second about the way we control these games, we just know what to do, so we concentrate on understanding what is happening, what the gameplay is about, and that leads us to ask ourselves what the game is about. And when YOU find out what it is about, you made the story happen as you understood it. Which is pretty much what happens in films or books: as you live through the story, things happen and you are part of the process. In most games, they just go "hey, you're that dude who has to save the princess, that's the story now just do it". It's two distinct things: try to watch a movie that is really strong emotionally with a friend and pause every five minutes to explain what is happening to him and he'll probably won't the things you felt discovering, exploring the story. And that is in my opinion why you can make games that are art, you just have to keep the player inside the character, Half Life did that really well with me, and that or portal would more likely be a game I would pick as "a game is art without relying only on scripted events" because scripted events although this is REALLY ironic to say that of such a scripted game... I guess my immersion and feelings came ALONG with the scripts rather than from the scripts. -
Wait wait, that's not how it happened !

Thing is, it happened to me, I didn't want to have sex and the girl was so into it that I couldn't really stop her... Would not ever in a thousand years cross my mind to call it a rape... za7jQ1s1BV0

"HEY look ! Apple did that pure design shit, and the web 2.0, facebook ahead is pushing it further, they all go to simple and empty and zen and healthy life and shit, let's do the same" That, to me, really comes from the fact that now, graphic designers work in a computer-enriched program activity world where they look at the web for new print design inspiration, another example: Sure you could find it sweet and whatnot but hey, on the portico of a fucking train station you just can't read it form more than a yard away, and in black and white on paper it's just hideous... And there is no doubt to me: the tropicana rebottling was sold with some "zen attitude bare feet to communicate my energy to the earth in my gigantic empty loft" with a bit of "when I drink tropicana, it just goes right through me and gets me moist" arguments, you make it zen you make it pure you just remove everything and bullshit the hell out of the marketing people at pepsi telling them you've done so much researching by slideshowing them a bunch of renaissance paintings and pepsi universe crap. Sad world, but hey, video games

The future of video games: Micro-transaction quick time event ! You want to dodge that car ? Pay 99c ! -
I agree, although for odd reasons my friends always played in licence to kill all the time I hated that mode ! Fortunalely now I burried them in the garden so I'll be able to play with some sweet mine !
-
Sorry I bring up a burried thread but... 50 cents and video games can go along pretty fine in fact Y-CIqArHlu8

Or they'll deliver the game with just Yesterday and the rest of the songs are DLC... Yoko Ono still owns the rights for a good amount of the Beatle songs and is quite a bitch when it comes to marketing..
-
Not really related but the game that had me wet my pants an awfull amount of times is Oblivion... God those fucking creatures have the worst habit of jumping on you from behind !
-
Ok, I'm just a psycho that can't control his needs... I want to play more of the same game, "let me play you again game" "no please leave me alone"... That's gameraping action live for you, enjoy.

Some more time like one or two levels with the companion cube would have been perfect to me, like if instead of destroying it, you would pass it from a level to another for some time and then have to destroy it. Same thing with a lot of mechanics: each level has something to teach, but I felt there were not enough when you are just combining them. Would you disagree ? Would you say that if there had been for instance all the levels from still alive in it you would have been bored ?
