  1. Feminism

When it's ingrained in a society that women are treated lesser than men, one cannot simply avoid going around "the comedian." The problem is far greater than that and to simply brush off sexist comments as jokes is nothing more than a dodge.
  2. You don't have to pass an IQ test to be a senator

+1 to Twig I appologize if I've come off as patronising. My wife and I have a five month old and one thing I've struggled with is overcoming how cynical of a person I can be if I let myself go unchecked. My attitude toward religious people is just another part of that. I didn't mean to be pushy or condesending; it's the opposite that I was going for.
  3. You don't have to pass an IQ test to be a senator

You're not derailing at all. I think religion is ultimately a vehicle people use to come to terms with their eventual death and as a means to have some sort of moral guidance. The idea of dying and having nothing being there to greet you once your heart stops beating is something a lot of people struggle with. Same goes with grief and whatnot. I don't think any religion is necessary whatsoever to teach morality, but these two things are what I observe to be the biggies in what drives someone to follow a religious path. I think the Bible and books like it are books with moral stories to help guide people and yes, some people take it a bit too literally despite scientific evidence proving some things are not scientifically sound. History shows that people like a little guidance throughout life, so people latch onto it. I think if something helps people become more comfortable about life and what comes after it, then it's okay to just let them think whatever they will. If they're pushy about it, then that becomes an issue with an individual and not religion as a whole. I'm not saying that "ignorance is bliss" or whatever; just that each person uses different things to come to terms with "the big questions" and that whatever makes them happy with themselves and treat others with respect is okay.
  4. You're right, I just glanced at that URL and my brain turned that "3" into a "2." My bad. That is a valid complaint. I'd say the main reason Pikmin 3 has no online is that they want to have it out by launch so it can be the "core" game that keeps them happy. I think Nintendo realized that not having any strong games of that nature at launch really hurt the 3DS launch, so they're going to do what they need to make sure at least one game of that type developed by them is there to fill that need right away.
  5. You don't have to pass an IQ test to be a senator

I don't believe in it, either, but most people on the planet are religious to varying degrees, so I think it's just kind of miserable to go through life thinking less of just about everyone you meet because of what they believe. I feel like if I went through life pushing people away because we differ in thoughts on religion or politics I'd be miserable and regretful later in life because I'd just be looked at like the douche that can't talk to people he deems lesser than him. It's okay to accept things as they are just let people be. When you stop spending your life being critical and cynical of every thought everyone has, life is much more enjoyable.
  6. Is this thread turning into a Gamecube love thread? Because that's the kind of thread I want to be in. Also, this is pretty much a straight port with Wii controls if I'm not mistaken, why are people surprised it doesn't have online? Also, the userbase of the console is dwindling because Nintendo is focusing on the Wii U/3DS. They basically had this port finished and just wanted to dump it into the US for some people looking forward to Pikmin 3 to get into.
  7. You don't have to pass an IQ test to be a senator

Ending your post in a completely condescending way kind of proves our point. You're saying "the religious people are forcing their beliefs on me" and then making fun of their beliefs a few sentences down. If you want to open someone's mind to your thought process or belief system, there are better ways to do it than "lol u believe in a bearded man in the sky." It's condescending and rude. Any religious person you'd want to engage in conversation with to open their mind about other ways to think about the world will completely disregard anything you say when you start making fun of how they think. What's the point in being passionate about expressing your ideas if your messaging means no one will listen to you?
  8. You don't have to pass an IQ test to be a senator

Yep. Militant athiests typically are every bit as insufferable as super-crazy religious zealots. It's perfectly fine for someone to believe what they do, but being rude to people who think differently than you isn't the way to get your message across. It just means people are going to dismiss you immediately and not like you.
  9. You don't have to pass an IQ test to be a senator

My tone toward religion used to be similar to Maher's, but I've learned that it simply isn't worth the effort. Everyone's relationship with faith and whatnot is their own journey that means something to them as an individual, so there's really no harm in letting them believe what they believe. Treating people right is what's important, and allowing them to do as they see fit is a part of that. I skew toward beign a humanist, but being a condescending, cynical turd about it gets you nowhere in life. I know a lot of hateful, hypocritical junk comes from arguments using religion as a basis for their argument, but like ThunderPeel said, they're just using religious material to back up their already-developed opinions, even if the text doesn't explicity state what they believe.
  10. Home: "A Unique Horror Adventure"

Anything involving the words "Home" and "horror" makes me think of the X-Files episode.
  11. Idle Thumbs Progresscast #13!

I would kill to see Terrance Malick's Sid Meier's Civilization II.
  12. Microsoft Surface

Looks nice, but like the OP, I predict this will severely lose steam in some fashion before it releases. I would love to see it succeed, though. Competition is always a good thing.
  13. Game of Thrones (TV show)

Game of Thrones is on a premium network, so 4 million is pretty damn strong. Comparing it to the Mentalist on CBS, a free over-the-air broadcast network, doesn't really work. Premium cable ratings expectations are different from that of basic cable ratings expectations, which are different from broadcast expectations. No one expects a show on HBO to get the same ratings as one on CBS. Game of Thrones is wildly popular, and it seems as if HBO is very pleased with how things are going.
  14. LOST

The first two big things I remember from the writers were "It's not purgatory." and "It's not dinosaurs."
  15. LOST

I think a lot of people initially thought that everything on the island was purgatory, which would've made everything we saw "not real" and I would've felt cheap, but I think the way they ended up handling it was a fitting way to send these characters off.

Nick Cave's score to the film is one of my favorite ever.
  17. LOST

There were times when the sideways would get to me, but we didn't really know what it was at the time. I think if I went back and watched that season again I would appreciate the sideways a lot more. I think the sidways enforced that this show was ultimately a mystery with great characters in the middle of it. After a while, the writers realized that they cared more about developing these characters and using this mysterious place to overcome their demons instead of focusing on putting out answers to questions that most people probably won't be happy with. I am perfectly fine with this. I also think it's worth noting that the finale aired two years ago today. I got married the day after. We made sure we were near a TV the night before to watch it.

:fistbump: I adore TAOJJBTCRF (I love having an excuse to type that). Describing Magnolia as a "beautiful mess" is pretty fitting. It walks the line between that and a total mess and never crosses it. A movie that does try to be ambotious and ends up being an absolute trainwreck would be something like Southland Tales. I hate that movie with a deep passion.
  19. Movie/TV recommendations

There Will Be Blood is this incredible tale of greed, loneliness, and power while taking on capitalism and religion. Jonny Greenwood's score (who is returning for The Master) sets the tone and creates and adds to the unrelenting tension throughout. I don't need to comment on DDL's performance or PTA's directing. It's nearly pitch-perfect. I love every minute of it. I could go on and on about Magnolia, it's one of my favorite films. Punch-Drunk Love and Boogie Nights are also pretty fantastic. So yeah, I love PTA.

Paul W.S. Anderson's rut of weird, bad movies began the moment he was born.

I love the work of both Deakins and Mendes, so I'm interested to see how they tackle a big blockbuster. There's enough to the 007 franchise to make me feel as if they're a good fit and for it. I generally am cautious when smaller directors dive into big action films, but I think Skyfall should end up being pretty good.
