I don't watch much F1, but I occasionally catch part of a race, and a close friend and ex-flatmate is heavily into it. Mainly I listen to and enjoy the Alt+F1 podcast on Giant Bomb. I do find the ever-changing nature of the sport pretty fascinating.

Wow. I never know what to do with this kind of thing, but usually it concerns people I don't have much problem avoiding, so I kind of sidestep the issue. Max pops up often enough that I feel like I need to make a very definite decision on what I think about all this, but I don't know how to do that. I know nothing about the accuser, but it would be mad to write her story off just because of my prior opinion of Tempkin, and having some idea of how often rape is ignored that way. But, like he says in his post, he doesn't really have any means of legitimate defence either. It's like everyone has to hold a little trial in their own heads with barely any evidence. All that said, there are some definite problems with his post, regardless of the veracity of the claim. Should that swing the balance against him, or are those the kinds of mistakes to be expected in stressful situations? I don't know why someone would fabricate such a grave accusation, but there's still a part of me that insists "what if?". It's probably the part of me that knows it would be more comfortable to keep liking the man. How am I supposed to decide? Statistics would probably suggest he did it, given how grim they always are. I don't bloody know. And regardless of all my stupid insular angst, I'm certain (but dare not check) that the accuser is having an absolutely hellish time. Even in the responses to his post, which specifically denounces any sort of defence force action, are very aggressive (in offensive and misogynistic terms, of course) with anyone who entertains the notion that Max might be in the wrong. I guess it's a luxury that this is a rare struggle for me, and not something I have to deal with all the time.

I guess "cyberpunk" is just the perfect word for the Rhode Island accent. Now we need to find equivalent perfect words for all other accents.

When I first saw the Big Dog I immediately thought it would make a great film prop. I was thinking something more along the lines of the future bits in Terminator, though.

I saw them support Mogwai at the ICA in London years ago (2006, apparently). I felt pretty rotten when each of my three cats died. Some people think it's silly to have strong emotions about pets, but they'd been with me for most of my childhood, and they died around the same time as a bunch of other links to my past were severed (childhood home and oft-visited family homes sold, etc.). It was a strange and kind of sombre time. My sincere condolences to your girlfriend. You should definitely be with her if she wants you there. I'm on holiday for two weeks. I'll be abroad Monday week, but I should be around this Monday coming.

It's a complete tangent, but I agree with Merus. I find it really irritating when people apply a new and generally originally very specific word to a well-established phenomenon as if it's something entirely novel. I'm probably entirely projecting my own bullshit, but it seems like the culture of today claiming some sort of revolution that doesn't really exist. Sometimes it's restricted to particular people. Like someone I know who will refer to every single piece of software, component of a piece of software and function of a piece of software as an "app". Feminism.

Fog is Kickstarting a new album after a seven-year hiatus. Anyway, I'm pretty excited about the prospect of a new album after all this time, and that short clip in the Kickstarter video sounds better every time I listen to it. I hope the campaign succeeds.
