True, but the original game (i.e. Cluedo) came from the UK. Not that it matters, obviously. In the course of my investigations* about this I discovered it came from Leeds too. How exciting. *5 second lookup on wikipedia

Ludo. Ironically using the latin name for the worst, most boring game in existence.

Just a warning to those who use IE7 with XP SP3 and Vista (and most other MS OSs tbh). There's a new exploit out (yesterday) which is mainly used as a game password stealer. Risk is mitigated by not allowing ActiveX controls and Active scripting to run automatically, or enabling memory protection within IE. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/961051.mspx The patch released yesterday does not fix this.

Surely the reply to the thread title should be: ...when just about anything happens.

I'd let her examine me. She can reveal my secrets. She can play my instrument. etc.

When was that bit?

Just read the Wikipedia entry on this game - and the bit about playing a song on your guitar to do stuff. Will the Guitar Hero peripheral work with this game?

Because I've been a bit slack in the last week or so, I now get two Thumbs podcasts in one day! Woo! It's like forgetting about your chocolate advent calendar for a a couple of days and getting a mound of treats at once.

Idle Thumbs 8: Green Lantern is the Blindfolded Fool

Thanks for the review on the Tower defence games on the iphone btw. I was wondering about TapDefence ('cos it's free) and didn't want to pay for FieldRunners in case I didn't enjoy it. -

My contract has just been renewed, but I'm so sick of the place, I'm looking elsewhere. Made it through the second interview to another company, waiting to hear on recruitment budgets etc. - although, I suspect, that they may eventually come back with nothing. Gutted. What is encouraging though is that the IT Security sector seems to be increasing, and a lot of companies (well, the big ones I've looked at) are reporting full pipelines for at least the next 6 months. Whether that will stay like that as companies get more strapped I don't know.

Put simply, C&C is to the Total War series is as Duplo is to Meccano. More specifically, the turn based game covers troop, diplomat, spy, assassin, princess, priest (or imam), warship and trade movement; it's represented by a large scale map, and each is represented by a figure. Then there's the city view, where you can upgrade your cities, but have to balance tax, civil unrest, religion, city improvement, troop and food production and governor loyalty - although there is no tech tree like Civ. The 3D battle is down to the unit level, where you basically set up on terrain (which will match the area of the large scale map wher ebattle is joined) and manoevure your troops as you see fit. All sorts of tactics are available, depending on your army makeup (catapults, cannons, light, heavy and missile cavalry, light, heavy and missile infantry, elephants, camels etc. etc.). Facing has a deal of meaning, and morale is crucial, helped by the skill of your general on the ground and his attributes which change over time depending on what you do. There are also sieges. That's nearly all of it in a nutshell... it's a turn-based strategy game with real-time tactics welded together in a very deep and complex game. They are bloody brilliant. If you go for one now, get Rome and it's expansion, or wait until Feb and get Empire.

Rome. It's super cheap, and you'll get the barbarian expansion. Get the updates from the site though, or you will suffer from bugs.

Looking at what they're doing with the AI, they've refocussed it from purely a chess based AI to one that does that and prioritises as well. There's a tech tree in there, plus it's looking as though diplomacy will be stronger, which has always been a fairly weak element. We shall see. Cautiously optimistc.

I first read that link as eightbitclock.com, thinking he was selling some marvellously retro alarm clock. But no.

Ok, so I feel like I can join this thread properly now I was very reluctant to buy it, as I've been so disappointed with games recently, but a friend lent it to me. I put it in the xbox...around half three yesterday...and didn't put it down until 1.30 when I finished it. I wanted to do the game without shooting any guards, which at times was a very, very frustrating experience. Ultimately very rewarding though (the game not the combat ), and have embarked on time trials and speed runs. The meat of the game, the parkours, is fabulous. Really slick and well implemented, with a few small foibles. The combat is garbage. The combination of the two is unfortunately a bit rubbish too as a result of that, and I had to basically resort to a slide punch in the goolies, followed by a quick 1-2 while they were sighing in pain. I tried the wall run-kick movement a few times but had a few problems getting it to work. Maybe I need to work on my 'enemy seperation' skills to give myself time. All in all a very enjoyable sunday afternoon, and (I imagine) a good few hours more with the time trials etc. Also...EA...what the fuck? you need me to enter an email to see online results? Dickheads. I can see why, as it's easy marketing info gathering, but still. Dickheads.

Those of you hitting the friend limit - how often do you purge it? It's like bloody facebook friends list...I went through it yesterday and pruned it viciously.
