There's not a chance in hell that that voice is computer generated. Both from an auditory standpoint in terms of clarity and tone of voice, but also from the level of sophistication in the dialog. There is definately a little boy stuck in a broom cupboard somewhere in Lionhead recording line after line of scripted dialogue. That said, the fishing minigame and seeing Claire's reflection in the water was pretty cool.

If you're under 18, gaming is about to suck for you

I think because that industry is much older and more developed and has put together certain styles that indicate genre and suggested age; cover pictures, thickness of book, size of text and position in library/bookstore. The games industry doesn't have any similar distinctions; games for adults can have the same visual style, packaging and marketing as games for kids. Only the ratings set them apart. And, for what it's worth, there was discussion in the UK last year about having coloured bands on books to define their appropriate audience. This is the website of a group opposed to the banding. I can't seem to find any information about who was pro- the rating system. -
What are the differences between the 360/PS3 version and the Wii/PS2 version? I heard that the former is more actiony and the latter more puzzley; is that correct? How does it work wrt plot and general gameyness?

For some strange reason, this thread makes me want to replay Escape from Monkey Island. Surely it can't be as bad as I remember it?

Also, I don't think the fish actually react to people or go around them; it's really just a virtual overlay on top of the real world.I have a vague memory - although I can't seem to find a video - of a group that did an AR pacman on their uni campus. The player wore goggles that showed him the dots overlaid on the footpath and the positions of the ghosts. They'd mapped out the university campus and set all the positions of the dots with gps, so it was the same game map for every player.

It's not quite on the same level, but this is pretty cool: http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/01/canon-gets-all-steve-zissou-with-its-mixed-reality-aquarium/ <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4hwCU-LUSM&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4hwCU-LUSM&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Well, if I interpret Wikipedia correctly, it's only a single segment in a gameshow. However, it got so many laughs on youtube that crappy tv producers thought it could be stretched out to a full half-hour show. They were wrong. It got put on tv here with a bunch of C-grade celebs (you know, the ones that even Dancing With The Stars wouldn't touch) each week competing in teams. It was about as bad as you can imagine and, surprisingly for trashy Australian television, rated equally badly. And now it's been cancelled and the world is a better place.

+ Brain Wall (/Hole In The Wall in some countries), in case you weren't aware of it. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-zxi_Y4Xu8&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-zxi_Y4Xu8&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Which is why I worded my post with the phrase 'just about'.
-
By that definition you could call just about any game an RTS.
-
I would still call it an FPS. Portal Guns shoot portals, after all.Would be like calling Halo an FPAAW or Bioshock an FPGMH. Advanced Alien Weaponry and Genetically Modified Hand, before you ask,

Thinking about this further, I suppose my objection is that none of the Telltale games I've ever played (and very few other games in the adventure genre) have a genuine sense of tension and danger. Many of the best Doctor Who episodes have ended with a ticking clock, a race against time or the Doctor and his companion running, running, running from some terrible monster. I just can't see how that vibe could be instilled in to a game.

My only, mild objection to Guybrush's hair is that it makes him look too adult, instead of the dreamy kid who wants to be a pirate. Anyway, why are people making such a big deal over MISE Guybrush's hair and not ToMI Guybrush's goatee? Makes him look like a berk. Also, I might be remembering this incorrectly, but wasn't it an occassional joke to the other pirates that Guybrush was incapable of growing facial hair?

I've gotten FPS sickness since the Wolfenstein days and it's gotten no better or worse as the technology has improved. I generally don't play FPSes because of that but occassionally one comes out that everyone tells me I HAVE to play, e.g. Portal, Bioshock. For those I take motion sickness tablets. I used to take ones that were chock full of chemicals but they made me woozy and unfocused. Also, if anything, they only hid the nausea so when they wore off, it hit me times ten. Now I take these ginger tablets that have no side effects and seem to completely stop the motion sickness.

Wait a moment... Telltale have already made the Doctor Who game. It was called Sam and Max, Season Two: Chariots of the Dogs.
-
I <3 both Telltale and Doctor Who but I can't imagine how this could happen and not be a massive gob of shite. For one thing, the doctor would never work as a playable character because he's meant to be slightly mysterious and have knowledge that the viewer/player doesn't. Also, I can't see how any game, especially a point-and-click-adventure, could capture the atmosphere and ethos of the tv show.

Activision sues to stop release of Brutal Legend
thorn replied to ThunderPeel2001's topic in Video Gaming
I can't give sources but I can remember hearing about this months ago. Maybe even right back to the point that the EA deal was first announced. It's just suddenly become news because the wider gaming public is now aware of BL. -
Working here too. I do share your dilemma though. I have all of Sam & Max; can anyone recommend a single episode of the rest of the games that is worth getting out sync of a series?
-
As someone who gets most of his E3 news either from Engadget or here on the Thumb... I can be a little out of the loop on the finer details. Can someone please tell me about / provide a link to the Brutal Legend awesomeness that people seem to be impressed by?
-
Not working in Australia either, dammit. I'm this || close to pulling out the credit card... even though, as you say, I've got a month until I need to actually worry about it.
-
Ron Gilbert gives his approval, as well as replaying and commenting on the original SoMI. EDIT: Also, it's going to be on PC, as stated at the end of this video.
-
What did he do/say?
-
And that Guybrush managed to escape the carnival without explanation.
-
Probably because they suspect both Nintendo and Sony are working on equivalent systems for their next consoles and they want to be first. Which is probably also the reason why they announced it today even though it's not going to be released until next year.
