  1. hitoshi - The analog stick IS used to strafe... Using the control method you suggest for the wiimote part creates a different problem, i.e. How do you turn around?

My mistake, you're right! Mea culpa

Thrik: My opinion is based on the footages seen from Red Steel and Metroid Prime - the two suffers from the same problem, to aim accuretly, you have to "go out" from the screen, it not just looks really bad but i assume it feels ankward too.

It's a great ide to use the wiimote for strategies, and that's true, it isn't as effective as a mouse would be, but it's hell a lot better then using the standard controller - it gives you a bigger movement freedom than anything else on consoles. Except of specially designed first/third party mouses of course :)

  2. Red Steel is...awful. Not the game itself, but the controls - the aiming is bad as hell, i don't know why they decided to use THIS method: it would be a lot easier if the wiimote could be used as a mouse with a fixed crosshair, and the analog stick could be used to strafe - move around.

It looks like Wii is not as good for FPS's as it may look like. Rail shooters please...

Still waiting for a decent game, not Mario / Zelda / Samus Aran. Show use MORE from Heroes please, Suda51!

  3. They've invested so much in Blu Ray that if the failure of the PS3 somehow made the Blu Ray format look bad, it could damage the overall strategy that they've been using.

Phil Harrison himself said that the "next-generation" (PS4<) will not benefit neither from blu-ray, nor any other formats - as we all know, the future is digital distribution. THat's why Microsoft's fight with HD-DVD is meaningless, and they really know that - it doesn't matter which format "wins", it's just something to spend time with.

But - the Playstation brand never sounded that bad since it was introduced back in '94: we have seen nothing from the machine, except some mediocre demos running from early devkits. It's just a great looking plastic balloon with a big dump of hype inside. It could easily pop off.

  4. I've just reached the part where you fly those attack pod things for the first time; am I about halfway through?

Yes you are, the levels will start to grow rapidly.

I believe Prey has been pretty successful commercially, so I'm going to be bold and suggest that 3D Realms are now pouring all their resources into Duke Nukem Forever. Who knows--perhaps we might even see a surprise Christmas 2006 release?!! :hah:

According to Shacknews, the DNF team is formed by only 20 people - sorry, minus one, yesterday, Keith Schuler left 3Drealms. The DNF project ship is not sailing as smoothly as it should be: it's frightening, but ten years have elapsed since the announcement of the game and there's still no public progress. I don't think that it will be released anytime soon, not in this year especially.

  5. I guess this is about as funny as "buy a car for Ron Gilbert". :shifty:

Naming an eagle after Colbert? Yes.

Some random bridge in Hungary? Who cares.

I care - the bridge is being built just a few kilometeres away from my apartment :) (just to be clear - the whole voting thing is just suggestion for the name of the bridge, the real name will be decided by a geographical council)

  6. I wonder how much legs the PS3 will have. Obviously it's going to sell out for the first year or whatever, but with a rumored price of 6700 SEK ($910) here in Sweden, I can't think of many casual or semi-casual gamers that would get one later on. Sony better have some sweet marketing up their sleeve to pull that one off. Obviously the slightly better pricing in the US might help some sales there.

It's a straight story, if Sony does not bring up good games - games what they really need, not just bringing up old franchises - then they will be forced to lower not just the prices, but their expectations also. The market has changed since the launch of PS2, Microsoft really plays its cards well, Xbox 360 sales are not as high as they should be, but the software support is awesome: just look at this year's lineup, or the Q1 of 2007 - games like Dead Rising, Gears of War, Mass Effect and Lost Planet can give a huge boost to Xbox: don't forget that the machine-selling games (like MGS4, DMC4) for PS3 are not going to come out before the end of next year! (Of course, PS2's lineup wasn't very good either, the machine's biggest selling point was the built-in DVD player - but the situation is not the same this time, people are not as interested in Blu-Ray now as they were back when the DVD-Boom happened!)

  7. I'm a dedicated FPS slut, but I'm having to force myself to play Prey--it's that lame. :hmph:

Interesting tidbit - i don't consider myself an FPS fan, but i've picked up every decent shooters in the past years. I've never ever waited for Prey, but after playing a little bit with the preview version, I felt absolutely thrilled. In my opinion, Prey is farly the most exciting and innovative FPS since - don't know, Half life? True, the levels and the whole game is pretty straightforward, the feeling is a little bit the same when playing with Doom3, but it's a lot more interesting. The ideas, like changing gravity, walking on the walls, using portals is pretty good, not to mention the presentation - the story is a little weak, and the scripted events are a little bit annoying, but the level design is awesome, especially when you are halfway in the game: it's when the true fun starts. It turned out to be good, not to mention it gave me back the hope and faith for / in DNF..

It could have been better, that's true, the features we've seen back in '98 are missing, and now, Valve is going to play those cards - but it can be solved. That's what sequels are for, aren't they?
