  1. Gilbert leaves Double Fine, which makes me grumpy...

Can someone please elaborate on the Breckon-situation. I seem to have missed the PSA.
  2. Why right?

Have you tried watching it via some proxy (e.g. Proxfree, Hide My Ass)? I have to use those a lot, half the music in 'The Dancing Thumb' is blocked in my silly country for example. !
  3. Feminist Frequency

Oh come on, you just wanted to link to that video, again. ! I see your point though, it is a lot more fun than everything else, especially this thread.
  4. Feminist Frequency

Mh, you raised this issue in a threat that was already a burning mess of anger and cantankerousness, you raised it at page nine and it was already acknowledged and discussed at page one (as well as other pages), you raised the issue while the threat was rather talking about the strange and suspicious level of hyper-scrutiny this particular video gets treated with and the issue was part of this nit-picky, hyper-sensitive, sometimes schizophrenic scrutiny for the whole run of the thread. I don't mean to throw you in with this mess, really, maybe just explain why people reacted the way they reacted. I agree, it is worth talking about, but (as I said like twelve pages earlier) I didn't have a problem with it, for me it worked.
  5. Feminist Frequency

Oh, yeah, I ignore you Luft, makes the discussion much more compressed and thus the money issue seemed much closer. (Sometimes I click on 'View it anyway', because I'm weak.)
  6. New Forums! Post feedback, notes, etc here

God, I'm still occasionally dumb enough to click on 'View it anyway'. I mean it is right there, maybe I won't just get angry and sad this time. Fucking moron that I am. I'd love the option to completely remove people from my Thumbs-experience - no option to read their stuff to bait my stupidity, and even remove quotes that carry their mark.
  7. Feminist Frequency

About the money: Not to re-beat a very stupid horse, but of the now 110 comments below the video - backers only, so people who actually put money into this - there is still only one negative comment.
  8. New Forums! Post feedback, notes, etc here

Klick on your name in the upper right corner below the forum banner -> 'Manage Ignore Prefs' -> put in a name under 'Add a new user to my list' and check some boxes -> 'Save Changes' and you are set. (A bit sad that this question gets asked quite often lately - pretty un-Thumbs-like. A bit sad that I know the answer through use.) Edit: Oh, or just look like ten posts up, same question, same answer.
  9. Secret upgrades!

    The truth will outrun
  10. Feminist Frequency

Yeah, thanks Chris and Jake, glad you weighed in on this!
  11. Feminist Frequency

He, even Psychonauts has the damsel in Lili - god I love that game. In Full Throttle Ben gets kind of saved by Maureen and she is a mechanic, that counts for something, no? He is the protagonist though, and he probably would have woken up later anyway.
  12. Feminist Frequency

That we actually don't talk about this kind of stuff in the wake of such a video but (have to) rehash the same fucking arguments with the same horrible cast about sexism and feminism and everything else that is a bit besides the point is pretty sad (and sexist). Yeah, he kind of fits the bill - he is a big fat pig though, I wouldn't call him damsel-y in any way. I was wondering, does Elaine ever free Guybrush? Maybe April or Zoë (The Longest Journey)? And regarding Pey'j:
  13. Feminist Frequency

Of the (right now) 87 comments below the video there is only one negative one. Some people have some points of critique, but they all start or end with some form of 'great work'. So I guess the people who backed it like it.
  14. Feminist Frequency

I'd still say she wanted to make a video about the damsel in distress trope and that's what she did, and she backed it up with lots and lots of examples and seems to have researched many many more. Not to over-snark, but if you want a video about 'good female characters', make one. And she actually has planned to make a video about 'Positive Female Characters!', so that should provide 'the other side of the argument' for this and all future trope-videos.
  15. Feminist Frequency

I don't see why you have to question her credibility as a gamer to get your point across. And how does in invalidate her point about Peach being the object in 13 out of 13 core Mario platformers when you can play her in the RPG? Yeah right, I call bullshit, I mean look at Jade and her camera! And though I don't think she has to mention any of the 'counter examples' when she wants to talk about those tropes or in order to not sound like a 'nut' (you serious?), but she did say that she wants to talk about some different takes on the trope in the next episode. God, I seriously am surprised about the reaction here!
  16. Feminist Frequency

Mh, to me it seems she could indeed turn this into a paper, she has done her research, she appears to be quite concerned with the language and terms she uses - but that is not it, and it does not want to be. That said, Tycho, you should give this a try - while I'm not very familiar with her other work this seems of a different approach. I like that after all the crap she got and still gets she managed to make the video very levelheaded, mostly scientific - I'd rather say the video was 9 feet academia and only 1 foot activism, and in my opinion she 'earned' that one foot with her research. In short: For me it worked very well, it 'meshed' well, but I can see the problem. (And then, when the system is unfair, to play by the rules just kind of supports said system, which I guess constitutes a difficult conflict between the need for a purely scientific approach and the need to make your 'pure' science actually heard and matter. But that is not necessarily that related to this video, just something that came to mind.) …he, I think it's interesting that it only took 7 posts for someone* to comment about what she's wearing. Haha, silly comment, or bait, I get it. That’s what I’m talking about. *Yeah it’s you Twig, and you are already well versed in the use of your brain, unlike the people who enjoyed the video.
  17. Feminist Frequency

Yeah, it does not seem to work right now. I really really like the first episode. Very well done! While the trope is probably the most known one this scientific dissection introduced (to me that is) and articulated some interesting thoughts. Now I'm eager for the next episode.
  18. Mh, actually all the videos in this thread don't work for me right now, but they all - including mine - do so in the same way, so I figured the one I posted probably works for other people and I just have a faulty firefox-plugin-whatever. Maybe like this: (There should be a video above.)
  19. Just seeing that makes my shins tingle. I'd love to try it. And this is the best:
  20. Youtube-TV

Watched it in two sittings, first felt really strange, stilted, second was indeed interesting and insightful. Thanks.
  21. Torment: Tides of Numenera

Ah, damn it, I just had to. Even though I'm pretty sure this game won't be Torment, and I'm not yet convinced Brian Fargo knows what he's got himself into when taking on two projects of this magnitude (game-size, legacy, peoples expectations). And the whole 'fans as publishers'-thing, mh, waaaaaaaah - anyway, I'm in, and already enjoying seeing that number grow. 601, 602, 603... Edit: The setting does sound very interesting, the potential to kind of include everything a creative mind can think up is quite intriguing. To handle this boundlessness well, again, different story. 613, 614, 615...
  22. BAFTA 2013 Games Awards

Yeah, congrats! Now Idle Thumbs is officially Bafta-approved.
  23. Mh, either that or it is 'code' for all the explanations that are given in this thread (and in at least one case right after the use of said word) about how she gets sexualised in the game as a whole and seemingly in the violence-bits as well which, together with the cultural context of women in media and the mix of violence (against women) and sex and all the other things we talked about in many threads here, are the part that makes it 'problematic'. Oh, and I don't see it as proven, or black, or white, just something that merits talking about.
  24. Post your face!

I did not know that. Thanks! Google even told me the name of the building - oh Google your omniscience is scary.
