  1. Feminism

Woah, cool. Thanks Ben. I had too much to do (and still have) to try again to change it (and then getting sucked into an argument with some Wiki-personal about *********). The more I thought about it the less it made sense. As Patrick said, what?, 'Bechdel Test' in reality, how would that?, what?, that is totally stupid. (Yeah, talking about what influence the representation of women in media has on people in reality-world is interesting, but that doesn't validate the first part of that sentence.) (I'm curious whether it will not be changed back this time. I fear that I won't go down that easily.)
  2. Movie/TV recommendations

I totally agree! Very great animation.

  4. Life

The day before yesterday I was at a class reunion. Not mine though but the class of '51. Lots of pretty cool older people there, very fit and funny and joking about being old and forgetting stuff and stealing cake from their neighbours plate. (You people will be fine, even after you all turned 30.)

Waaaaaaaah, the worst can of worms! Sorry for reopening this thread, but The problem is related, it doesn't merit a new thread and it bugs me quite a bit. So, the Wiki article for the 'Bechdel test' ends - under the section 'Limitations' - with the sentence: "She also wrote that it remained to be determined how often real life passes the Bechdel test, and what the influence of fiction on that might be." I took offence with that, as the way it is presented in the article seems to me to imply that yeah, maybe reality is like that, so the fucked up way women are portrayed in media is possibly truthful and thus okay. Also I read the chapter that is quoted (you can find it online) and I thought the question was asked in a very rhetorical way with a strong contextual 'no' as an answer, so for me even the quote-selection is at the least incomplete, if not misleading. (Maybe my reading of said chapter is a bit on the wishful thinking side, but if it was in fact meant as an open question it would kind of invalidate the source, in my eyes.) But my deletion was undone with the comment: "You may disagree with what the source says, but it is on-topic and from a reliable source. [W]e write articles based on what reliable published sources say, no matter what we think about their merits." What do you think? Am I overreacting, misunderstanding?
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

A little Nuthatch is skipping up and down a tree in front of my window, it's a great joy to watch it go about its business.
  7. Meeting people from the internet is weird

What, he is not? (I probably have known that at one or several points, but his avatar and name are just too convincing, as are the castanets and his manly but/and sensual deep black eyes. Stereotyping?, yeah, I write with both hands.) I have never met someone from the online world, but I guess it would be okay. The problem is rather that I'm not very active in electronic communities so I tend to not have strong bonds with those people. But I'd totally go to a Thumbs-meet if it happened somewhere near me, because you all seem rad!
  8. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I saw them in Berlin and they seemed so very tired. Not a good concert. Maybe you don't miss much by not seeing them live. (Still, great music. And yes, I just wanted to brag a bit. Hope you get another chance to see them [and prove my experience wrong].) Music: The Michelles - Springtime
  9. GTA V

Nvidia's pretty and new wave technology is for you then.

    Thanks.
  12. Sonic Devouring Tails

I don't get it. Can someone please explain.
  13. Any characters who are major leaders in games?

Not to say something a bit too obvious for everyone else to point out, but that Paradox games - Europa Universalis etc. - or strategy games in general tend to have you play as the leader of your side. And the mentioned strand of games (though I have not played them judging by what I've read about them) seems to go in the direction of what the game GoT-clip talks about.
  14. Any characters who are major leaders in games?

Doesn't Gordon Freeman fit the bill quite nicely? I seem to remember or probably imagine that he gets called 'leader of the free men' or some similarly smart play on his name. Okay, he doesn't speak, but that doesn't seem to bother anyone or distract from his leaderly qualities (in the eyes of the people swooning at his sight).
  15. Youtube-TV

I just recently discovered the 'Crash Course!' series on Youtube via Penny Arcade's 'Extra Credits' and quite like it. It's 'courses' on history, biology and so on by John and Hank Green (and supported by Google, Wiki says), very broad topics covered in short clips, so probably not much new stuff for people who know about the topics discussed, but I like the attitude of the program, it's well produced and the humour works for me. Any channels or series you people watch? Not only 'education', I'm interested in anything. On the Nerdist-podcast they often talk about all those Youtube-shows, and I have no idea about any of this stuff. It's like I'm new to the internet. The only online-series I watch are 'Extra Credits' (which is great as well, but you all know the show, I guess) and now 'Crash Course!'. Oh, and ' ', those lectures with a whiteboard and a hand drawing on it illustrating said lecture. Good as well, known as well I guess, and I'm not sure they produce new stuff any more. (Non Youtube-stuff is great too. Good thing about Youtube though is that I can download things in the library and watch at home where I only have bad internet.)
  16. Youtube-TV

Thanks! I really liked the three videos - the one above, and - I've seen so far. (Though I find the self-deprecation to be a bit at odds with the quite highbrow and insightful analysis he does, but that's just a minor oddness.)
  17. Life

That sounds like bullshit bullshit and you are just scared of rejection or being inadequate or giving up some control or something, whatever, you should embrace that complex of feelings to its fullest extent, it is a very important part of the human experience. And if you get your heart broken but manage to keep yourself together to a certain degree you might get some primo high focus work time out of it, you know, to distract from the pain. I mean, yeah, you are probably overreacting, just go with it, it might be fun and exciting. And new experiences are good a lot of times. But if you really don't care about this stuff, don't let anyone tell you you should. I mean:
  18. Saturday Morning Streams

I'd very much love this as well!
  19. Life

Sententia, you manage to get home? And, on a related note, are you in fact made entirely out of sugar? (30 minutes of rain, pff, when I was your age we had to swim to school.) Yeah, Tegan, sounds great. Actually meeting with your parents in your city (I suppose) sounds like a bold step, hope that it goes according to plan (and that you have one [always know where the exits are {and I'm only half-joking - your parents seem difficult}]). In August I'll go to Ecuador for a year for a social project. I'm excited!
  20. Thanks, I just had a very faint idea of what is going on in this clip.
  21. Double Fine's Dropchord

So Dropchord (says RPS). I love very much like you Double Fine! Even though this is maybe probably not really my kind of game I love that you make it. You are the coolest! Where is this coming from, other then the great place Double Fine seems to be at that is called 'because we can'? 2011's Amnesia Fortnight? And Leap-what?
  22. Life

He, I didn't even know it was a real name for people who are not fancy musicians. (And I knew about them being gay and Canadian and then your location is Canada as well and you are outspokenly gay and I thought, woah, it's Tegan from Tegan and Sara. I mean, not really, I'm not that crazy. Just a tiny bit.)
  23. Your link is broken I think (and it redirects to a cat story somehow). Was curious and I guess you meant this comment-thread (some horribly stupid stuff, but the RPS-readers handle it quite okay I'd say - but still, the stupid tends to emotionally outweigh the good for me in those cases, so people, read at your own risk). Edit: Okay, I just noticed that in the above quote the link works. Äh, I'm not the only one who sees the cat in the F.E.A.R. 2 outfit, am I? What, crazy, no.
  24. Life

Hope you manage to work things out for you tegan*! And if it helps you writing about this stuff here, do so without hesitation, no need to apologize or something. *Has your name something to do with the great band Tegan and Sara?
