  1. Feminism

I guess I strongly disagree with you here. Even if ones intent is just to be funny, it can hurt people and it can support discriminatory structures, and that matters. The linked here before made the distinction quite nicely, I thought. Intent concerns who you are, but what you do is the important part for a society.Could you elaborate further on why you think intent is the sole important thing to look at, and effect doesn't matter to you? (Honest question, I have problems following you there.) While yes, humour can draw light to issues in society, criticise, subvert, it is often just there to make a certain audience laugh, without regard for inherent problems or people outside that audience. We had comedian here, not funny, not offensive, but sexist in a lame and boring way. 'Women are this, haha', 'men are that, isn't it silly' – god it was dumb, but people ate that shit up, TV, concert halls, quite a sad sight. I'd never argue for him to be not allowed on stage, but people should have booed him off of it the first time he started his damn routine. I have the feeling that your 'black people and their jazz' remark merits another discussion, but maybe I'm over sensitive now and that's just how I read it.

Mh, not being bothered, or rather feeling hurt by any joke is part of the white-male privilege. Regardless of what happened to you personally, as a group white males are the dominant group in our society and even if they are the target of some jokes, it is, generally speaking, detached from real-world power-structures and problems. Other people have to deal with the joke-material in real life all the time – when they hear a group of privileged dudes laugh about the funny stuff they actually have to suffer through on a daily basis it becomes a manifestation of those cruel power-structures and the fucked-up distribution of privileges. You managed to grow a thick skin, cool, and it sounds like you needed one, which sucks, but try to imagine how you would have handled the bullying, the skin-growing, if it wasn't some bullies, or even a lot of bullies, but the job you didn't get because 'Women get pregnant at that age', or the flat you didn't get because 'Black people are troublemakers and we are a peaceful community here', or the police who stopped you the third time this month because 'You are probably in the drug business', or being sexually harassed by a random stranger, or seeing some dude jerking of to you and your friends in the bushes at the age of twelve, or the whole media telling you, directly or indirectly, that you are weak/worthless/a criminal. (Some prime joke-material in here.)

Mh, if jokes happen around friends, people you know, hell, no problem, all's okay I'd say (that is okay with them, obviously). But if you are around people, strangers, in the cafeteria for example, still just talking to your friends, but with lots of other people around who can hear you, then the 'joke' becomes part of the problem - part of that which alienates the people who are discriminated against from society, part of the discrimination. And yeah, as a white western dude who is not a well informed activist in the concerning field it would probably be good to always take your opinion of some issues you are just not the victim of with a lot of humility. When 'feminists', or other involved people take issue with what you say, it could very well be that they do that for a reason. What happened to you when you were young sounds like bullying and even if they bullied you because you are white, it still has just about nothing to do with the discussions in this thread. But it does suck, no question.
  4. Movie/TV recommendations

The Intouchables is a great movie, go see it (again). While emotional buttons might get pushed it never felt like it was calculated or cliché. The trailer gives some of the charm away, but still, it was a joy to watch. Maybe it helps to not be a boring cynic drunk to enjoy such a mostly positive and sometimes heartwarming movie.

Aww, silly stupid people, cute! They turned it around, probably because they have no idea what they are talking about. I hope they get educated!
  6. Tomb Raider

This game still looks good, interesting. It feels a little like the people making it actually at least want to try to make a Lara with character, with depth, but the publisher still feels the need sell it via old tropes - 'Yeah she is deep now, but in a sexy way'. That there are crass overlaps – being nearly raped makes her sexy – might rather be due to bad communication, some individual and a certain idea of market realities, than to authors intend. Maybe they think that the same people who pollute Youtube-comments and organize and harass other people are actually important and need to be pandered to. --Wishful thinking--
  7. Feminism

Yeah!Yeah! Thank you. It's not just the sexism itself, it's all the discussions and counter-discussions, the defensiveness and tired reactions to that and to all of it, the attitudes ranging from 'it's just a game' to 'it's just sexism' to 'yeah, sexism, I know', some of which we see even around here, that make it interesting and, in my eyes, still worthwhile to discuss. You could probably say that this forum, as far as game-forums go, is one of the least offensive to and hopefully most welcoming places for all sexes and genders and thus maybe one of the better places to discuss it. I don't know, I learned a lot here, due to you people and your great input.

I'd like to state that an entertaining and educational video series about the sexism against women in video games rather aimed at people new to feminism (or thinking about sexism) seems to me to be far more important than an academic dissection of female characterisations in said medium and hopefully not as pointless. Not that you directly said otherwise, I just wanted to say that for the record.
  9. Apple WWDC 2012 Keynote

    It's , he's cool.
  10. Diablo III

Ha, when I read the new posts in this thread it dawned on me that I might never have read such a long game related thread here on the Thumb that was so much about numbers, technicalities, efficiency and so little about The Fun. This Diablo III you guys are talking about seems like a strange beast. (I could not yet play D3, but probably will in the distant future. D2 I played a lot till this single moment when I realised that I was just going through the motions – then I deleted the game.)
  11. Life

Yesterday night I took a walk and came by a dying hedgehog on the street – hit by a car probably some minutes before I found it. It was breathing very heavily, couldn't move, there was some blood around. My first thought was that I have to kill it, but pretty much instantly knew I could not do it. Then I wanted to move the little thing off the street, but when I touched it, it shook heavily and I couldn't do that either. I sat on the curb for some minutes, talking to it – more for me as it probably sacred the small one (if there was room for fear besides the dying). I couldn't bear sitting there doing nothing, watching him suffer for long, so I got up and left, and when a car passed by I wished for it to finish what another one had started, but the driver saw the bundle and drove around.
  12. Unreal Engine 4

That's pretty much what keeps my excitement low. The tech in all its glory will primarily be used to make environments in which you inflict harm on people or the people you kill look more amazing. And if it's not the killing that turns me off, it will be the sexism, and if it's not that it will be the boring unoriginality of the shinier Ice-level, or the Lava-level (yeah, it's only a tech-demo, but still, it was pretty much that). Some years ago I could easily get excited about new engines but nowadays I just feel alienated from the mainstream this is part of.Sorry to just come here and poop on this, it's probably in part just post-E3 cynicism. Again RPS summed it up pretty well some days ago: E3s Press Events Do Not Represent The Gaming I Know.
  13. General Video Game Deals Thread

Yeah, I saw it, but then forgot - and then it was too late. ('code' as in 'for Gemini Rue'? If you happen to find it and don't need it, I'd be happily take it.)
  14. General Video Game Deals Thread

I'm very curious as to what they add to the Humble Indie Bundle later in the run. Gemini Rue would be great, I don't have it yet and sadly no real money to buy it. (On a side note: I wonder who bought the Bundle for 1.000$ and wrote 'I'm lonely' for people to see in the 'Top contributors'-list. It's a sad sight. Or is it an ad for something?) (On another side note: I'm rooting for the HIB5-sales and check them quite regularly, because I want Doublefine to stay healthy and in business.)
  15. New people: Read this, say hi.

Hello New People! Jeff, might I ask how you happen upon your peculiar forum-name 'Viehfutter'? It's so...German though your location is Dallas. Are you Dirk Nowitzki?
  16. Home: "A Unique Horror Adventure"

The game looks interesting Tanu. Do you - or someone else - happen to know the system requirements? I couldn't find any info on the linked site. I'm asking cause right now I only have netbook - a not very new netbook that is not very fast.
  17. Gifts - Stuff for Free

See, for me it is a way of conveying meaning, tone, äh, subtlety (yeah right!) without using those little pesky faces other people use quite a lot. I don't like using them, and very rarely do.You got a problem with that, sucker? (See, I don't even know how to use them properly. I do not think you are a sucker, Thunder!) BTW: Font size 8 is unreadable for me - is it just me with my tiny screen?
  18. Hitman: Absolution

Thanks for the link, Nachimir. Sometimes I just brush stuff like this and the anger it entails off - it's so ubiquitous, getting angry about it seems pointless. That apathy is a problem.I retract my 'what renwood said'-comment. I'm angry now. Get angry!
  19. Gifts - Stuff for Free

Yeah, I have one Bastion as well. (Sorry for stopping to maintain the list in the first post. Didn't seem to be very useful for people and too much hassle for me.)
  20. Hitman: Absolution

It bugs me that people (you and the RPS-chum - yeah, people) throw Tarantino in with this bullshit. I do see the similarities, but the part that is bad about this Hitman-trailer, the sexism and male-centric-gendered power-fantasy-claptrap, is what Tarantino totally does not do. He would have a woman kill those nuns and we'd probably know every nun by name and breakfast. Aaaanyway, what renwood said.
  21. Diablo III

I just listened to Idle Thumbs episode 2, wherein Nick describes the great fun he had playing the Diablo 3 beta – the episode is three and a half years old, so my question is: What changed? Polish, I guess, but it seems the game still has some un-shiny problems. I’m not trying to sound all internet-douche-like 'What did they do all those years?', I was rather just surprised to hear them talk about D3 that long ago and now I'm curious as to what took them so long. So, what did they do all those years? (Btw, my PC is broken, so I can’t even play the game, which is probably good, because I have shit to do and the self-control of a person with low self-control.)
  22. New Forums! Post feedback, notes, etc here

Cool, I can edit which forums are shown in the 'View New Content'-section. Very thoughtful. There should be a link to the main-site somewhere in the forum-region, no? (Stupid that the small font size from before The Change correspondes to '8' now. Makes all my old shit unreadable.)
  23. Plug your shit

Hey SpeedyDesiato, I really enjoyed Episodes 10 and 11 - all the epiosdes I've listend to till now - of your podcast Buried in the Credits (episode 10 a bit more, with Dave you seemed to have a better chemistry somehow). You have a good podcast voice, at least in my ears, and the concept of the show is great. I hope you continued to find interesting people to talk to.
  24. New Forums! Post feedback, notes, etc here

You just earned yourself a Warning Point.
  25. New Forums! Post feedback, notes, etc here

Oh, new, cool! It says I have '0 warning points' - what do I have to do to get more? And Jake, you probably noticed, but your non-square Avatar is squared in the thread-header. It looks silly.
