  1. Yager's Spec Ops: The Line

This was definitely one of my favorite games this year. It wasn't perfect by any means. I thought they could have been more subversive with their achievements, the tacked on multiplayer was practically hypocritical (even though it was demanded by the publisher, not the dev studio or writers), and the tension between the main character and player is strained quite a bit at times. But I loved how it subverted people's expectations of modern military shooters. It felt like a game for people who play a lot of games. I'm tired of military bro-shoots, but I'll gladly play more that explore war and soldiers in a more mature way like Spec Ops attempted.
  2. Arkane Studios bought by ZeniMax

I think ZeniMax definitely wants to be one of the big boys, though. They might be the next 2K in a few years if they release some good games.
  3. Limbo

I liked the atmosphere, but the constant trial and error required put me off. Not only was there tons of trial and error for figuring out what the solution was, but then there was trial and error for getting the timing of the solution right. The very last puzzle pretty much epitomized this. It just annoyed me after a while.

I kind of liked how it went all in the end. It was like they decided "You know what? Lost, Fringe, and all those other shows with big 'mysteries' aren't gonna answer anything because they all think it'll be ridiculous. Well fuck it, we're going ridiculous. Here's some !"

The Barbarian, since I figured he'd be the easiest for figure out. His skills mostly seem to be different variations of hitting things.

I beat the original Diablo for the first time after having it on my backlog for years. It never clicked with me before, mostly because I was expecting some deep story driven game. Once I realized it was more about the loot and character development, I had a lot of fun with it. It holds up really well, atmosphere is top notch. Now I've started Diablo 2 and it's all crazy wtf different. But I still like it. Just have to get used to it and its crazy intimidating skills trees and such.
  7. PC Geeks only. [Empire: Total War thread]

I really really really liked playing Rome, except when the real time battles started. I was awful. I lost nearly every battle I tried in real time, and quickly learned to just hit auto resolve every time. The overworld map stuff was what I enjoyed the most about it, but unfortunately it didn't seem that hitting auto-resolve every time was a viable way to play and have any hope of winning. Because of this, while i WANT to buy Empire, I have a feeling I just wouldn't get much out of it. If they made a version without the real time battles, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat.
  8. F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

I enjoyed it for the most part. I never got the feeling that the AI was cleverly hunting me down like I did in the first FEAR, but the combat and slomo stuff was still fun. My biggest complaint is that it didn't really advance the story at all. Like Condemned 2, it spent more time fleshing out the story of the first game than doing anything new.
