Oh man, that's real great.

Oh man, Synnah, that'd be great! I was planning on trying out something myself (this whole project has been a lot of me doing things and thinking: "there is probably a better way to do this" and then just plowing ahead anyway), and I was going to just keep it similar to the , but with the word "wizard" before the little ending "pling" noise, if that makes sense.

Jurassic World: Wasting away in Margaritaville

It's disappointing, yeah. At least (as io9 pointed out), the website is really interesting, and well put together! -
I made an opening splash screen tonight:

So, the timing is a little tough, since I don't think that Stencyl allows for as fine of control as I want. It seems as if sometimes, the game syncs up well, and sometimes it doesn't, and I don't know why that is the case. I think that rhythm is just a tough genre, so I am abandoning the kind of fine tuning that is required of a true Rhythm Heaven style game. However, that being said, I'd love it if the music and the voice sample sync up somewhat, so I'm still messing around. I'm pretty happy, at this point, that I've made it so that I can upload a file that has the set of timings (in beats, not seconds!) for the various pizzas, and the game can read that and interpret it, since it makes things a lot easier as a result. I think that pretty soon I'll be able to start trying to create the final art for the game! This is going to be real challenge, since I am not the greatest pixel artist.

Thanks, this is great!

Patrick, do you know offhand how many bpm Chirply is? (I think it's 141-142) I am going to use it to test out the rhythm aspect of my game!

Ok, so, in the last few hours, I did the next step, which is the mostly internal task of letting the game know when I've shot something that I should have shot. The game, right now, randomly just picks whether or not to send a pizza slice across that you should shoot or not shoot, but now, the game knows if you succeed or fail at that task. This has been a fun learning experience already, although I'm mostly just learning how my weird astronomy coding skills can be translated into this goofy form of "programming." Oh, and as a last goofy thing I made it so that when the pizzas are destroyed, they spawn little pizza pieces that choose random directions and go spinning off and fading. And I added a start screen.

I am making myself laugh until I cry / I don't care whether or not anyone else finds this humorous

[RELEASE] Shoot that Pizza / I Like the Hair

I am so excited for the giant pizza shooting spectrum that this game jam will encompass -
Hrm, actually, I just made it so that when the pizza actor collides with the bullet, it kills the bullet itself, which is kludgy, but that's the only thing that's ever gonna collide with the pizza, so, fine. Now it works. Also, it's super funny to me, too. Just the ugliest game, and these funny rotating pizzas. (Edit: I got them to explode, too)
-
Wow, it was pretty easy to get the pizzas to fly across the screen at a set interval. The logic for Stencyl is pretty goofy, here's where I had thought I was setting the bullet actor to kill itself on collision: And, according to the easy to follow crash course guide, that's what I needed to do. It's just not actually doing it. The collision detection is also pretty wonky.
-
I find this gif real funny. I really wish I knew why the bullets, which are set to kill themselves on collision, are kind of ricocheting after destroying the pizza (you can't hear it from the gifs, but there are sound effects).

Tonight, I'm game-making, using unattractive temporary assets, mostly to see if I can get the behavior working initially. Hey there, temporary turret and temporary pizza.

Wizard Jam - Idle Thumbs Game Jam Interest Gauge / Chit Chat corner
RubixsQube replied to Dinosaursssssss's topic in Idle Banter
Yeah, after fiddling with Stencyl, I think I can do this, starting from Zero Video Game Making Experience. Now I just need to have inspiration that is within my fairly limited grasp. I am 100% sure that my game is going to be mega dumb, but that's part of the fun. EDIT: Yeah, I think that I'm going to have to go with SHOOT THAT PIZZA -

I am really interested in doing this. A) Is it ok to use established artwork from something, like, say, a nintendo game from the distant past How much of a game does this have to be -

Here is a clip from the movie, where Chris Pratt sexually harasses Bryce Dallas Howard while he fixes a motorcycle, because that's just how cool he is. This movie is going to be really bad! -

Argh the game is just coming along gorgeously. I've named this repeating set of star patterns on the (presumably unfinished) starfield "Sadface." -
Sue is definitely at the Field Museum, and while she's a way in from everyone, she's still an incredible, incredible thing to see. Those are the actual fossils on display there, and she's over 90% complete. Just a marvel. I'd definitely go see her at the Field Museum.

Idle Thumbs 204: The Reader's Pleasure
RubixsQube replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Danielle's Steve Gaynor dream reminded me of something I still find pretty wonderful, even if it's now 12-years since it was written, and I have all but stopped caring about those shitty Penny Arcade guys. Tycho once wrote: "Romeo and Juliet is a Goddamn timeless template. I saw it set in Ireland with an all female cast and it still worked, one family was all lesbians and one was all dinosaurs. You just can’t fuck it up. You dab your eyes at the end and wonder what is so wrong about the love of a lesbian for a dinosaur." -

Idle Thumbs 204: The Reader's Pleasure

Yeah, Haunted Mansion is really one of the highlights of the entire theme park. I really like how devoted HM fans are to the ride and it's history. For instance, here is an enormous wikipedia page (actually, it's about the same length as Chris Remo's page, which I find pretty amusing) for the "Hatbox Ghost," one of the animatronics that was on the ride for all of a few months after it opened. It became something of a legend, with a real insane cult following, and is going to be a pivotal character in the upcoming movie (no, not the Eddie Murphy film from 2003), and will return to the ride. ALSO, last year they discovered actual and caused a huge to-do across the HM-verse. ALL THIS TO SAY: Disneyland fans are as obsessive as any other. Did you guys see any of those weird "Disneyland gangs" that prowl the park making things happier for everyone? EDIT: ALSO YES I was hoping you'd post that, A++ Space Ranger 1 -
Idle Thumbs 204: The Reader's Pleasure
RubixsQube replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
For anyone who goes to Disneyland, and specifically, Disney's California Adventure, if you want to go on Radiator Springs Racers, the Cars-themed ride that Chris described in the episode, you should seek out the single-rider line, which takes the (at peak) three-to-four hour line and makes it a more manageable thirty to forty five minutes. Cars Land is an enormous triumph for California Adventure, even if you (like me) don't care much for the film. Radiator Springs Racers is a fine ride, with some neat whiz-bang stuff throughout and a nice sense of speed, but because of the enormous popularity of the film Cars, the damn line for the ride is insanely long. The single-rider line is designed to allow for every seat on individual six-person car to get filled in each ride, which means, in practice, that a family of four will get in a car, there will be two extra seats, and they'll just put two members of the single-rider line in there to fill it out. Because of the family appeal of the ride, the single-rider line is really great for this ride. OR, you could wake up insanely early and get there, which also is nice since early morning Disneyland is one of the most wonderful things. Danielle's description of Disney World is part of why I was so sour on it when I was younger and went. It was too big, and too spread out, and it didn't feel as special as Disneyland does. I am one of those west coast assholes who declares Disneyland to be the true experience, though, so take what I say with a grain of salt. -
I'm happy it's Friday, even if the weather is pretty deeepressing up here. I submitted a copy of my latest paper to the co-authors, and I've got evening plans, so I'm feeling ok. SuperBiasedMan, I'm close with my parents, even though I live on the other side of the country, and we only talk every few weeks. My parents are pretty awesome, and have a lot of shit going on, so I respect them, and am open with them. I think they're pretty cool, also, and so they do relate to my interests, and accommodate my quirks. I enjoy going home and staying with them, even if sometimes the things that they like (primarily media) don't quite line up with mine. Were you closer to your dad when you were younger, and things changed, or have they always been that way?

Yep! I think that even if you didn't like it (which is a thing that happens all the time considering films are art, and art appreciation is subjective), it's really great to have a creative sensibility like Amirpour's out there, making movies that are different.
