  1. Hitman: Absolution

    Those guys are the worst.
  2. Procedural fairy tales GO.
  3. Life

Another thing that occurred to me at some point when I was thinking about religion was that while I can give many reasons for not believing in any deities or supernatural forces, they are all rationalizations. The real reason is that I'm just not feeling it. For some people, the religious experience is real and I would be a fool to try to convince them otherwise (also a dick).

What Patters said. I was an atheist twat when I was younger and this was why. There are common beliefs about what science is that are used to back arguments that attack religion. I think these beliefs are harmful to science (and science education, but that's another story) and to the discourse between secular and religious people. I also think that when I attack those beliefs, I'm not attacking science.

Science has debunked many things that specific religions have claimed is the truth (heliocentric worldview is an obvious example) and it's excellent for finding inconsistencies in claims, but when did science debunk God?
  6. Life

I totally agree, but it's that original assumption that's important to keep in mind. Science works extremely well for explaining and predicting our experience, but it is based on some key assumptions. The practice of science is not problematic, but science cannot uncover absolute truths in the sense you would need to disprove God, for instance. This is why some of the greatest scientific minds have been religious at least to some extent. Science itself doesn't require faith, but a positivist approach to it does. EDIT: Hmm, maybe positivism at least in its current form isn't what I mean. Stephen Hawking: That's a good description of the scientific method. Note his caveat regarding time. This: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientism is what I'm arguing against.
  7. Life

    Yeah, do that instead.

http://www.youtube.c...kuXuQ9eA#t=235s You could tell him that the belief that science is getting closer and closer to uncovering the workings of the universe (which is why most atheists find deities unlikely) is merely faith peddled as truth. There is no philosophical argument that can explain how we could get any kind of information from a world beyond our senses, including whether one exists. Atheists have no claim to being closer to the truth.
  9. I've played it once. I killed some zombies. Then I didn't really know what to do or why do it. I think I'll have to log in to kill my wounded character before I play with you.
  10. Movie/TV recommendations

There's a ton of stuff like this in the film and these aren't even the best clips on Youtube. It just goes crazier and crazier towards the end. Definitely see it if you're at all interested.
  11. Hitman: Absolution

Goddammit IO. I wanted more Hitman Why hasn't any indie picked up this type of gameplay yet? At least one that I would have heard good buzz about.
  12. Movie/TV recommendations

That was really fun. Took some time to get going, but just hilarious towards the end.
  13. Hitman: Absolution

Huh. I don't think I'll be able to play this game, regardless of how good the end product might be. This is just too much.
  14. Hitman: Absolution

    I have, so I can't!
  15. Hitman: Absolution

God. I really want this game to be good, but there's just nothing I've heard of it that would justify expecting that. IOI have a history of filling Hitman games with weird examples of strong racism and sexism, and it seems like they've just gotten worse in that regard.
  16. Movie/TV recommendations

Hah, I've deliberately avoided mentioning the film because as a Finn I'm not objective at all. It's not perfect, but sci-fi comedies rarely are. It has an absolutely brilliant gag that refers to Chaplin's Great Dictator.
  17. Game of Thrones (TV show)

Hmm, ok. It just doesn't seem like all that many people!
  18. Game of Thrones (TV show)

The number of viewers is pretty low. Never more than 4 million in the US. Compare that to The Mentalist, for example, which must cost pennies to make and has had around 15 million viewers per episode for four seasons. So I'm worried they'll just stop making GoT before the plot is finished.
  19. Anathem

I haven't even heard of it. EDIT: Ahahah.
  20. Anathem

Well, Diamond Age is totally different in any case.
  21. Game of Thrones (TV show)

My favourite is Geoffrey. He's so dreamy.
  22. Movie/TV recommendations

Yeah, Nic Cage is fantastic. Of course, it's best when he's in an actually good movie (Bad Lieutenant), but I just saw Knowing and had a good time.
  23. Anathem

    The Deliverator delivers pizza.
  24. Movie/TV recommendations

Why isn't that Bear person wearing a woolly hat if it's cold? This is why I prefer Survivorman. He would wear a woolly hat.
  25. Movie/TV recommendations

How about TP and me agreeing? Bruno and Borat are brilliant. I've had my fears about The Dictator. From the trailers it seemed not at all what I was hoping for.
