Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."
brkl replied to Urthman's topic in Idle Banter
Haha, man. I can't search the Windows Store for OSC controllers because the search only knows how to search from the start of a word. Like, I know there's one called MetroOSC, which I can find by typing 'Metroo', but not 'OSC'. It's 1995 all over again. -
Probably because they never finished the season.

Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."

I could fix it from the Command Prompt from inside the boot menu using the somewhat lacking instructions in that link. I guess someone at Microsoft really likes that background. -
I don't know what to say to those comments. I thought the game worked great and the choice of where to go next over who to save felt a lot more true compared to Walking Dead. I had a great time playing this, but the newer Telltale games don't seem to have as attractive properties so I haven't gotten anything after the (disappointment) of Walking Dead Season Two.

In the Desktop folder. They have zero bytes. EDIT: Yeah, that thing broke my Windows, it won't start anymore. I guess I'll try to find out how to reset it. -

Y'all are talkin in abstract when my desktop has been taken over by Communist China apparently. Does anyone have any idea what that could possibly be? I don't anything apart from what you can see from that screenshot. I just saw that stuff suddenly. -

So this is worrying. -

Yes. I'm not all that opposed to Microsoft imposing a background, but it's really terrible and doesn't look at all like the rest of Windows 10 visuals. Cheers. -
Do you guys know of a lightweight solution for an internet call where I could stream my desktop (this can be low FPS) as well the sound from my computer to the person on the other end of the line? Actually, I could do with just a place I could easily stream my desktop and sound and do the rest with Skype. It seems that many of the video call programs can do the desktop but not the sound from the desktop.

Didn't autonomous lawnmowers already exist? They look exactly like Roombas. I thought Roomba made them already.

Does anyone know if you can change that fugly new background when you type your password to sign in? -
I'd like to make a joke about Vainamoinen appropriating my culture, but I can't in the thread where that's discussed because it could lead to a super dumb derail. But anyway, Vainamoinen is appropriating my culture.

True Detective Weekly 8: Omega Station Pre-Discussion

No one would use a film camera for that purpose. Seeing those photos hanging off a wire was such an anachronism. -

I heard that problem has been solved in Windows 10. Try upgrading first and making the restore image later. -
I already speak Finnish. We pronounce the 'p' in 'psychology'.

The number of letters just plain doesn't matter. For example, as far as I know, 'caught' is never a diphthong even with the 'au' and just a simple /t/ even with that 'gh'. Diphthongs are considered single phonemes anyway, at least according to how I was taught. It's been a long time since I had to think about this stuff.

You rascals made me dig out my OED. These things vary a lot depending on your accent, so using words as examples is a bit of a minefield. 'Robot' was a terrible example. So, I'm flummoxed by the 'boat' example. My OED says it's /bəʊt/ for British RP and /boʊt/ for US English. I'm sure there's an accent somewhere that pronounces 'boat' without a diphthong, but I've never heard of it. [o] doesn't really occur in the kind of English most often seen on the television unless you're watching Trainspotting. If you want to pronounce [y], follow RyanCConnelly's advice with your lips in the same position as the word 'food' and your tongue in the same position as the word 'free'. Probably. Then make it short.

[o] is the second 'o' in 'robot'. The first 'o' is a dipthong that's tough to write on a mobile phone. Unless you pronounce 'robot' and 'rowboat' identically. Pedantry!

True Detective Weekly 3: Maybe Tomorrow
brkl replied to Sean's topic in True Detective Weekly Episodes
Wasn't it the other way around? I thought Ray said it first. Anyway, I rewatched the first episode and caught up. I ended up liking the first more and feeling pretty good about the show. I'm hoping that the apparent coincidents in the first episode turn out to not be. Why did Antigone storm into her sister's workplace? That could have been intentional. She could also have been chosen to deliver that foreclosure notice which ended up connecting to her father. I'm betting at least one of those questions gets answered. The former soldier (I'm sure he has a name) finding the body does not rate as a coincidence, it's the reason he's in the show. Anyway, loved how this episode began. BTW, the raven head was obviously taken from the murder site -- whoever is wearing it didn't go in as a masked avenger. -
True Detective Weekly 2: Night Finds You
brkl replied to Jake's topic in True Detective Weekly Episodes
My read on this that either her sister didn't actually grow up there, which I think is unlikely, or she's exaggerating because admitting that her sister is getting her life in control on her own terms diminishes her because she can't admit her sister could find a path without just doing what Antigone tells her. -
They'll block the FBI and then they can't spy on them.

Ooo, what? I loved the book! Have to check that out.

I thought it really marred the escape sequence at the start and the fight between Max and Furiosa. Just made it silly instead of tense. Didn't notice it apart from that, so I suppose it worked well then.
