  1. Gaming semantics

I apologise, my use of the word "it" meant I wasn't clear with what I said. What I meant was we are talking about the possibility of language having changed, and whether it is valid to apply FPS in this new context. As I already said, just because we are talking about the possibility of language having changed doesn't mean it has, it just means some people are using the word this way. Also ben was clearly using hyperbole when he said everyone is using it. Please, please stop being so bloody arrogant. You are the one that missed my point, my explanation about "sick" is directly relevant. I was pointing out that FPS is being used incorrectly in terms of the meaning(in EXACTLY the same way as fish is sometimes used incorrectly to describe dolphin) so resistance to this new use is completely valid, whereas while I may not like the term "sick" (and think it's silly) the reasoning behind it is justifiable within the context of the word's meaning. Remember at the start of this you were telling people to just get over it an move on because language has changed. Which is the main thing I'm arguing against, just because you've heard some people use it doesn't mean you have to accept it as a change in language. Even if language has changed, then what's to stop us changing it again to get rid of this usage?
  2. Gaming semantics

This is absurd circular reasoning, "it's being debated so obviously my viewpoint is the correct one" ? That's a very convenient debating tool ¬ ¬ We're talking about the possibility of it, and whether it's valid, that doesn't automatically make either of those things true. The use of the word "sick" to mean something good is one of countless examples of words being used ironically, sure the original meaning is directly in contrast with the new one but that is exactly the point. It exaggerates the descriptor to the point of being "so good it's bad". The use of FPS we are talking about isn't being used ironically it's just being used wrongly. Wait wait, what you are saying here says that because FPS is being applied to Gears of War the term is now less precise and less useful....... this is exactly the reason it shouldn't be applied to GoW! There are many types of FPS games with varying gameplay styles, but they all have two things in common: 1) a default first person perspective 2) shooting as a dominant action Some have twitch / strafe gameplay, some are more deliberate and slow. None of them have a default third person perspective, the term FPS doesn't describe a gameplay style.

Exactly, this is what I meant by "handing down decrees" I wasn't implying you were making stuff up, I'm well aware of language theory, just that you were presenting these possible changes as fact which is absurd. I shot the messenger because I didn't like the delivery Also I think you are wrong in saying that it isn't because people are idiots, stupidity or ignorance is certainly one of the causes of such changes. People hear something said, don't actually understand it and so repeat it a little wrong or use it in the wrong circumstances. A great example is the phrase "I couldn't care less" which has morphed into "I could care less" in America. The second version doesn't make any sense looking at the words being used (yet is used in the exact same context) and clearly arose because people didn't understand what they were saying.

ThunderPeel you are being supremely arrogant about this, handing down decrees that language has changed. Personally I think it's stupid to call Gears an FPS, the term FPS exists to distinguish between perspectives in the shooting genre, what benefit is there to strip it of its meaning? Just because you are lazy enough to accept a bad classification doesn't mean everyone else has to be.
  5. Double Fine

I like that the tail looks look some kind of trunk. That is all I have to contribute.
  6. BioShock - They weren't kidding...

Note, if you get a mechanical switch box you pay a hell of a lot less and you never lose any signal quality in the switching (which you do with the majority of electronic switchers). Of course the downside is you have to get up and flick a physical switch, but that's much better than switching 5 plugs around
  7. Er, if you buy via steam you pay the dollar price, it is more like 30 Euros or £22:tup:
  8. It's not expensive, it's great value and it's just ridiculous to take a stand against them giving away HL2 & Episode 1 in the package. Seriously how cheap do you want 3 games to be? Would you complain if say Nintendo released Mario Galaxy with a free copy of Mario Sunshine at standard retail price? You pay more for any single game at retail.......
  9. Mario Strikers Charged

It's only known as "The Gland" in select parts of England, civilised people call it glandular fever (note: I also learned this fact as a result of this discussion and was going to post the wiki link)
  10. BioShock - They weren't kidding...

God yeah, when they hammer on the little tunnel things for the sister to come out and there's no response, they get frustrated and I feel really guilty, despite the fact I have SAVED every single one. As to the bees, I can't understand why someone would create a plasmid to make bees erupt from your arm, it freaks me out and so I avoided that one, hehe.
  11. Manhunt 2 - From AO to AOK

That's ridiculous. The comment that "we don't release AO games on our console" was made by SCEA, Microsoft America and NoA, and as such only applies to the regions where they are relevant. Also a system as you describe wouldn't work if a game were to be released anywhere but the states first.
  12. Rusalka Schafer

Indeed, sadly or pleasingly (you decide) I thought of the self same quote. But then I always do whenever I see something fake, it's such an oddly pleasing quote.
  13. Uh, Phoenix Wright 3 is out for the DS...

I thought the "Full Version" was the GBA version and that the budget releases avec translation were the first time they were seen on DS....
  14. Bioshock: PC or 360? [NO SPOILERS!]

It's not at all unusual. GAME and gameplay both sold the CE online, but as with every CE they have ever sold they are allocated a set amount and when the pre-orders fill that amount the product is removed from the catalogue to prevent people asking questions about something they can't have.
  15. Bioshock: PC or 360? [NO SPOILERS!]

"Apparently" being the appropriate word, since you can activate it as many times as you like provided you uninstall the game where it has been previously installed. Not saying it's great, but it's not as bad as everyone is saying.
  16. [name]'s Bioshock Review

You've pre-ordered exactly what you think you have. Wrestlevania is .... well..... wrong. I have ordered the Collector's Box with Big Daddy statue, from GAME. It's also available from Gameplay as I know two people who have ordered it from there
  17. Dead Rising

There's a magazine to give the escortees courage and make them fight. Also I would suggest generally using waypoints to make them stay in a place, rather than go to a place. Don't waste the good weapons on them, they last longer and are far more effective if you use them. Give the escortees shitty weapons. I was caught of guard by the loonies event also, but it always happens when you first enter that area after a certain story event I think. So you can control when it occurs so you can deal with it first. I have nothing helpful to say about getting groups of people to zone with you, they are all stupid jerks.
  18. Idle Thumbs Steam community

Ok, I sorted it out earlier today, mine is eljay.
  19. Dead Rising

Well if you beat the clown you must have his mini chainsaws right? Most useful weapon in the game, so damaging! They respawn at the spot where he died, and you can get 3 magazines that can each multiply the amount of hits it lasts by 3, and these stack. That equates to approximately 1620 uses per chainsaw (note: you earn more inventory space with higher levels) I'll leave it to you to find the right magazines Also worth using is the katana, doesn't last very long though. Don't forget you can give the escortees weapons to defend themselves also.
  20. Dead Rising

There is an achievement for saving everyone in one playthrough. Also achievements for escorting 8 people at once and 8 women at once, so yeah..... it's possible
  21. Dead Rising

You need to find a way to communicate with them...
  22. God of War

I think he's talking about the jerks who pop in and out of the ground with the blades for hands. They were easily the toughest enemies in GoW, I seemed to recall grabbing them a lot whether they were nearly dead or not.
  23. Xbox 360 First Impressions

Marketplace is where you can download all the online content such as demos, videos and XBLA games. Media is where you can view or use anything media related such as videos or music. Arcade is where you can play anything you have downloaded. System is where you shockingly change any system settings. I thought it was all pretty self explanatory, there are some redundancies in menus for good reason, they are things you are most likely to want to do at any point, like playing the game that is in the disc tray.... The widescreen issue with SC, is probably to do with a bizarre thing many games do, which is cinematic borders. Most only do it during cutscenes though... You've set the xbox to widescreen in the system blade right?
  24. E3 thread

Well how about this blurb that is attached to the trailer: "Unleash hell on earth as an art thief that gets tricked into opening the greatest box of legend, Pandora's Box." I doubt this blurb came from nowhere....
  25. EDGE names Ocarina of Time 'greatest game ever'

There's not much to discuss. They are wrong and the voters clearly have limited experience in the world of games. That's not to say I didn't enjoy OoT, but best game ever it certainly was not.
