Yeah, best not to wind these kind of people up unless you have an ocean and several economic orders of magnitude protecting you.

Sophie Houlden did some excellent cheerleading on motivation for creative people this evening: http://storify.com/nachimir/indie-cheerleading-by-s0phieh

According to that wikipedia page, yes: The dimensions of a face shrink by two cubes for each layer. I've messed about with this a couple of times, once on someone else's phone, and once by myself. I can't be arsed with it, but that wikipedia page makes the idea a bit more interesting. I'd assumed it was all being carefully controlled and the cube would open at a very specific time. That might be the case, but if so at least they're putting a decent amount of effort into faking it. That the last layers could be so tiny and blasted through so quickly intrigues me too; it implies that it'll have a long lull of activity in the middle, then rapidly increasing activity toward the end. I bet their servers aren't very well prepped for that…

Obligatory Comical YouTube Thread II: The Fall of YouTube
Nachimir replied to pabosher's topic in Idle Banter
Ooh, that's pretty nifty. The one I got on a whim a year or two back just does the five minute chunks, and there's a pause of about 1.5 seconds between them, so if something happens at that point you're shit out of luck. The Navarra video in Mington's link seems unreal, and is pretty gruesome despite the lack of visible carnage. -

There's a bunch of of cheap cameras built for it now, that use MicroSD cards and continuously record 5 minute chunks of footage. As the card fills up, they delete the older files, and you only need to faff with them if something happens. Even the HD ones are fairly shitty cameras, but the footage is good enough as evidence. Cyclists use them too. -
Fresh Kickstarter Compendium Extraordinaire

A lot of board games have done quite well on Kickstarter, though that's probably the most extreme success I've seen. It makes me sad that their page is covered in ludicrously proportioned women with their tits hanging out. -
It was Alpha Colony, though it turned out the developers had a reason to not put their own money in. I'm very pleased Sportsfriends made it; local multiplayer is important.

Bicycles improve my life, even in winter. I used to spent a fair amount of time running to stay fit, now staying fit comes from something practical and built into my routine. It requires much less discipline. Ooh! They look sound excellent. If I can get a nice enough chime, I think I could make an even more minimalist one. I used to use a lamp on a timer switch to wake up, and it woke me very reliably, but I kept screwing it up in winter: It would wake me, I'd glance over at it, think "Oh, fuck, I fell asleep with the light on again", switch it off and go back to sleep thinking it was 3a.m.

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

This is a lovely, hypnotic video: -
Ewww, I missed this until Thunder highlighted it. Rx, well done on concluding such devilishly cunning game. You will change the face of this community overnight. Keep shinin' that spotlight of TRUTH and STANDARDS on our sweary, cussin' internet ways. Add it to your linkedin profile* *Translation: Surprise! You just burned the last hope of anyone caring. Back in your hole, read the scrub article.

Ah, well. Obviously not the big names. I've slowly got to know quite a few indie developers through it though. Often, I'll meet a developer at an event and we'll realise we follow each other on Twitter already.

I want to high five you for watching Primer, Mington. It's been too long, I need to watch it again, but with the accompanying (spoiler heavy) chart.

I enjoyed the LoTR films, and it was nice seeing books from my childhood quite vividly realised, but: For any subsequent viewings, they are pretty much an especially dramatic type of wallpaper. The hour or so of endings in Return of the King made me fidgety.

How about: Let's never, ever be content with this sort of bullshit existing? I find it a little flimsy to say "Yeah well, it's just marketing". When marketing something, we all have choices. Whether it goes to the core of IGN or not, nothing exists in a vacuum, these things have cultural effects. The whole bro culture it's referencing and selling to is dumbly repulsive, and reinforced by everything engaging with it. Saying "It's just marketing" makes it about as okay as "If we didn't do it, someone else would" (Try replacing that with other things: "If we didn't do paid reviews, someone else would"; "If we didn't recycle press releases and marketing puff for our news items, someone else would"). Also, watch Kieron Gillen on the subject of marketing. Specific part paraphrased: "If you feel uncomfortable about doing marketing, then you haven't found the right way to promote your stuff". Writing bullshit off as "well that's just what marketing is" stocks your head with assumptions, in turn limiting you so much when it comes time to promote something you yourself have made.

As Thunder said, this is kind of like asking how to have conversations. Think about stuff, discuss it. What forums you should be a part of depends on who you want to get to know and what type of community you want to be in. TIGSource, Super Friendship Club, Klik of The Month Klub, The Chaos Engine, Quarter To Three, and RLLMUK are all forums where you'll find gamer and game developer communities of various types. Find where you fit best, and get on with it. Idle Thumbs is good because you generally find literate, switched on gamers and developers with intelligent opinions. Also: Fuck not swearing. Get to know a community rather than laying down your own rules. Twitter is also a great place to get to know game developers.

I think this thread has come full circle. Maybe we'll get another flurry of excellent fake box quotes

Relevant: http://www.gameranx.com/features/id/10438/article/study-of-box-art-reveals-games-that-feature-non-sexualized-women-on-the-box-don-t-sell-well/ Games with sexualised female characters on the box art, or aggressive male ones, sell better.
