  1. Nintendo 3DS

Ok, for $20 I'll buy the fucking ugly analogue stick. I'm not happy that they chose to add it so soon after releasing the console, but as long as things actually support it I'll deal. God, I'm such a sucker for Nintendo stuff. I've known that for a while, but when the news about the second stick leaked it was the first time when I've actually felt like a sucker. I'm just not sure how to feel about the console now. Still, I'm happily anticipating my GBA downloads, so I guess I'm not too mad at them yet.
  2. New people: Read this, say hi.

I have a basic knowledge of the Cyrillic alphabet, but none of the Central Asian tundras. I have not solved your ARG, sir.
  3. Rock of Ages

Yeah, I discovered at one point that if you get all 3 keys and then immediately go into the menu and hit "restart level" the game lets you keep the keys without even finishing your round. If you're getting frustrated trying to collect everything, keep that in mind. I sort of really just wish that this game was Super Monkey Ball: Art History. The defense part is inoffensive I guess, but completely slows the game to a crawl right when you're enjoying yourself. Whatever, still a good game.
  4. Deus Ex 3

During the intro when your lab is being raided, did you kill anyone who was doing the raiding? Because that counts. When I learned that, I was bummed because that was the only time I'd killed anyone. No achievement for me.
  5. Deus Ex 3

Nope, you're locked in to combat with him, and there's no backtracking once you find him. I was massively ill-equipped to fight him, which is why I had to use the "EMP and cowering" technique. I didn't have a single point in any combat disciplines whatsoever at the time, so don't worry too much. He's still entirely possible, he's just a massive pain in the ass. Whatever you do, don't try to face him head-on. And FYI, bosses don't count for the non-lethal achievement. They have to die for the story to happen, so killing them (but no one else) will still get you the achievement.
  6. Deus Ex 3

Hold on to an emp grenade or two to stun the boss, then when he doesn't know where you are, run around the room hucking explode-y shit at him until he dies. For the second boss, upgrade your armour until electricity no longer hurts you, then shoot the wall-thingies to shock her and turn off her cloaking device. Unload guns in her face. For the third boss, high-jump over the walls, and when he follows you make him land on mines. Using these methods, I have now beaten all 3 of them (playing on "Give me a challenge" difficulty). Godspeed, 'blix.
  7. Deus Ex 3

I'm pretty sure I'm about to beat the game and have yet to buy the typhoon. Useful?
  8. Hey, someone on Steam's forums figured out a way to get analog mode to work with a mouse and keyboard. Pretty much exactly the way I thought it would work above, too. Check it.
  9. Deus Ex 3

Just beat that one myself a couple of nights ago. Luckily, I'd already read this thread and knew about jumping over walls and laying mines for him to land on. This game would be SO GOOD without boss fights...
  10. Damn, if I'd known I totally would have tuned in. Any chance of something like that getting archived? I just want to see the Games and Famous bits...
  11. Movie/TV recommendations

Your wrongness is the "subject" which we "agree" upon.
  12. I'm down to try pretty much anything to get my controller to work at this point. I've been fumbling in the dark off and on for years now, forgetting about it and then trying for another few days every time a game comes along that I want to use a control pad for. I'll give it a shot Monday afternoon when I get home.
  13. Hard Reset

I certainly hope so. I pre-ordered it (I almost never do that) and have been getting really excited, but that RPS review made me sad. I really want this game to be sweet, and if all it needs to do that is a quick-save button, I hope it can be added.
  14. I am incredibly interested in this game, but I would want to play it on my desktop and with a 360 controller, which for some reason I've never been able to get to play nice with one another. I have Vista 32 bit on my laptop, installed the 360 controller drivers once, and have never had a problem. I have Vista 64 bit on my desktop, have uninstalled and re-installed drivers so many goddamn times, tried pretty much everything I can think of, and have never been able to make the exact same controller work. Does anyone know of reliable third-party drivers or anything if the official Microsoft ones will never seem to work? If I could get my damn controller to work on my desktop, I would likely buy this game in a matter of minutes.
  15. Happy Birthday!

Have an ext-Remo birthday! Is that still a thing?
  16. Life

Damn dude. That's a shitty situation, no doubt. Anxiety attacks are something that I don't have first hand experience with, but several close friends and my girlfriend are afflicted with. They can be dealt with if you recognize when one is coming on, but you need to get a few before you can see that pattern. If my girlfriend starts giggling a lot for absolutely no reason for example, we both know that she needs to go sit down and take deep breaths for a while before other emotions start to take over and she shuts down for a bit. Other friends have other warning signs, but there does always seem to be a pattern. Hopefully if this happens again you find yours sooner rather than later and can start to deal with it. As for the business thing, I completely agree that it sounds like a pre-ordained failure and all I can really say is that if family politics are really giving you no option but to take it, I hope that minor early failures are enough to convince your folks to get out of the market before something more catastrophic happens. Basically, I hope the business fails just enough for you to convince them but not enough that you can't recover. Good luck to you, man.
  17. Rock of Ages

I have it and have played a little, but unfortunately most of my gaming is done on my laptop during slow periods at work and there's not a great internet connection there. Thus, the majority of my gaming time I am unavailable for multiplayer. Still, if you're online and want to try your luck, there's no harm in sending me a steam message. If you're lucky, I'll be on my desktop at home and up for a game.
  18. If the right stick is usually your camera control, wouldn't it be the same as disabling the camera control and enabling analog smacking when you have the trigger pressed on the pad? Couldn't you just hold down RMB and move the mouse as if you're smashing a guy with it? Wind up, then move quickly in the opposite direction for the strike, right?
  19. Really? The Rock Paper Shotgun "14 hours in..." thing talked about aiming your melee swipes, and I can't imagine John Walker playing with a "console toy" pad...
  20. Books, books, books...

I suppose that would depend what it's translated into and how good the translator is. I don't think there's too much that would make it incredibly tricky, provided that it's only the English parts that are translated. The version that I read already had bits in English, French, and the Algonquin language (that last one was mostly just (but not always) names, with phoenetic guides next to them). If you're capable of reading English (which you obviously are) and can handle some Quebecois-style French, I'd try to find a copy in the original language. That said, I'd actually be really curious to hear how it stands up in your native language. Hopefully it would come across as well as it did for me.
  21. Books, books, books...

It entirely depends. I've never made it through a book of poetry on my own, as much as I respect it. On the other hand, worked into a larger narrative, I love it. An example from the last year is when I read Leonard Cohen's "Beautiful Losers" which alternates chapters between prose, letters, and occasional poetry that illustrates the fragile mental state of the main character. Those are incredibly powerful, full of interesting language and wordplay, and impressed me greatly. So for me, poetry is a fantastic narrative device but not something I go out of my way to read on its own.
  22. General Video Game Deals Thread

I think Star Wars: Battlefront was the name of the Battlefield 1942-style games. The PSP ones had added in single player modes that I think were actually pretty well recieved.
  23. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

    I concur. Holy shit.
  24. General Video Game Deals Thread

Kane and Lynch 1 I was actually very impressed with. More than I thought I'd be, anyway. It's not perfect, and the sequel is sort of garbage, but the first game is a fun time, and is at least interesting in its squad-based tactics-light gameplay. For $5, I'd give it a shot.
  25. Deus Ex 3

At least Alpha Protocol's bosses had the decency to glitch out and let me kill them easily. Also, Alpha Protocol, flawed as it was, was amazingly ambitious in it's adaptive story and character reputation systems. It was also kind of janky all over though, meaning that it was less out of character for the boss fights to be not-so-good. DXHR is not as ambitious, but also more polished in every regard. Which means that these utter shit boss fights are much less excusable to my mind. Not only do they stand out more due to the polish level of everything else, but I can't say "but look at this OTHER, totally mind-blowing thing that the game does", which I could say about Alpha Protocol. Don't get me wrong, moment to moment, DXHR is the better game. Somehow though, I feel like it will also be less memorable (for good and ill) than Alpha Protocol, and as a result less special.
