  1. Movie/TV recommendations

    Yeah, Zebraman is fucking excellent.
  2. Recently completed video games

That is a goddamned EXCELLENT idea. I really want to check this game out now based solely on that detail.
  3. 2012

Man, I still have that sitting on my shelf from buying it at the beginning of last year. I need to get into that some time.

Oh shit, that is an excellent choice.
  6. Saint's Row The Third

I've played most of the game with a spikey-green-haired lady with the default American Lady voice, with a two hour dalliance as a British dude for the cheevo. I stand by this decision.
  7. Mario Kart 7

I thought it was based on how many coins you ended up with, but who knows really.
  8. Mario Kart 7

Wario unlocks when you beat (I believe) the Flower Cup on 150cc. There are 8 character unlocks, one for each cup on the 150cc level. Nothing aside from kart upgrades for collecting coins until you get to that level, I'm afraid. Also, once you beat all 8 150cc cups, you unlock Mirror mode, but after beating all 8 of those there were no unlocks for any of them. Poo.

Funny. Until I had to RMA my laptop, that's EXACTLY the way I'd been playing Skyrim. I installed Morrowind on my significantly less powerful desktop and had been thinking of booting it up. Maybe I should give it a shot.

Ahahaha. Can't fault you for erratic playing habits, at any rate. I've only ever finished one JRPG myself, Dragon Quest IV, with honorable mentions to Earthbound, Chrono Trigger (gave up on the last boss of that one), and Persona 3 Portable. I actually thought I was going to make it through P3P for a while there, but after not playing it since the summer, I think I can safely say I've given up on it now. I did really enjoy the almost 50 hours I put into it, but at a certain point I was just done with dungeon running and the quality of the story was no longer enough to pull me through. I'd still say give it a shot if you're in the mood for more RPG-ing after all this.
  11. Mario Kart 7

I'm really not sure. If I have you on my 3DS friends list though, I'd be down for a race or two sometime. Now that I've finished up Mirror Mode, I'm looking for some real people to race against. While I didn't win every single race, I did get gold on every cup on the very first try. It's kinda easy. Still, after the super disappointing Wii MK, I'm very happy that the series seems back on track. EDIT: Also, snaking in general is fine, I suppose, but I've always found it beside the point of the game. It tends to ruin it for those who are in it for just a fun, light, racing experience. That said, I do like the analogue stick activated blue sparks. I wish Nintendo could find a way to have it so you can only activate on a turn but it is still dependent on stick-shaking. Doing it on straightaways is dumb, but I like the idea of the amount of boost you get being based on skill rather than how long you can hold down a button. As such, I will always prefer the old blue sparks implementation to the new.

Man, oiling up your CDs prior to use is NOT advisable.
  13. Saint's Row The Third

Updating my drivers seems to have helped. Tweaking the settings down didn't do me any good at all. As I said, I played for around 8 hours without issue on fairly high settings, then all of a sudden my frame rate ate shit. I cranked it down to the lowest settings and got a game that had exactly the same performance but looked worse. Driver update means I can crank it back up and play smoothly, so I'm happy again. Goddamn this game is good.
  14. Saint's Row The Third

So I've been playing the shit out of this since getting it and love it to pieces, but during the past week I've started getting unbelievably bad frame rates while doing nothing in particular. Apparently this is a known issue, and I'm updating my graphics card drivers to try and compensate as I write this, but given how much fun I've been having and how great everyone says the end of this game is I'm really saddened by this. It's been nearly unplayable and given how damn fun the game is that sucks. Anyone else have frame rate issues on the PC? What did you do about it? I'm pretty sure it's not my rig, as I played for 8 hours without issue before this crap started happening.
  15. Cargo: The Quest for Gravity

So... What the fuck? That has to be some of the most surreal 45 minutes I've ever spent on the internet. Has anyone picked this up? I'm having a hard time resisting the urge. Looking for Thumb input here. Recommendations?

I do want to say for the record that while other games may have overshadowed Portal 2 for me, one of the defining moments of my year in gaming was playing co-op with Patters when we discovered that . The outburst of joy over the microphone coupled with that being the moment that our robots unlocked the hug animation to express how FUCKING STOKED they were by what we'd just pulled off will stick with me for a while. Going back and playing the co-op DLC with Pat again later only solidified for me that if you haven't played the co-op in that game you've missed one of the best experiences this year had to offer. The single player was by turns funny, charming, and exhilarating, but the co-op has it beaten handily.

  18. PS Vita

I loves my 3DS right now. Working my way through the last set of Pushmo levels and the Mirror Mode of Mario Kart 7 means that not much else is getting played at all. Mario 3D Land was also great, and Zelda is worth a shot too. If you can do a try before you buy, do so and get a feel for it. It's a really nice system, and now that it's cheaper well worth a recommendation.

Ok everybody, cooldown time. Things are starting to get personal. Let's take a step back, shall we?

Thus concludes the riveting ongoing saga of Ben's balls. ... in all seriousness, glad to hear it went well. Here's hoping you some wonderful hernia-free adventures!
  21. V The Elder Scrolls

I've been playing this game in the most "fucking around" way I could think of. When a guy leaving the tutorial cave said to me "Head to this town to talk to my sister, she owns the tavern there." I said "great!" and walked in the opposite direction up the side of a mountain. I've now been playing for about 6 hours, am almost level 10, and have not done a single piece of story content. I am pleased with this. My Argonian lizard-wizard Paul Atreides (named for his glowing eyes) seems to be off to a pretty good start.

...and just got a call from the tech shop I bought my laptop from. Seems there was impact damage on my screen so I need to send it back to ASUS. Balls. At least it's covered by their warranty. Still, I need to mail it to Toronto, wait for repairs, and then wait for it to get mailed back. Also, since I live in a basement suite and don't have a front door, I'll need to go to whatever post office they use to pick up the thing. Where I will need photo ID. Which I currently don't have. Bitchin.

I too enjoyed what I played of it. Wish there was more to keep me engaged, but what game was there was fun enough.

A couple of recent things resolving today. For one, I RMA'd my laptop to get a new LCD panel on it, so I'll be more-or-less PC game-less for the next week and a bit. No Saint's Row or Skyrim for me. Sadness. On the other hand, at least my shit is getting fixed. Also, today I surrendered my learner's permit in order to start the processing on my honest-to-god driver's license. I have no government ID for the next two weeks now while I wait for the new card in the mail, so I hope I don't get checked at any bars, but otherwise I feel pretty good about that one.
