That looks totally fun. I'll need to look into it.

Yeah, I own and love Dominion, but I worry that it may be a bit complex for students. With how much reading is involved on each card and working out how they'll interact for each different game, it may be a bit advanced. Not to say I won't happily give them the chance to figure that out for themselves, I am more than willing to be proven wrong, but it may be something that gets deemed "too complicated" by the kids. It'll be there, but I worry it'll also end up abandoned. Especially if I work in expansions, as those only make it more complex.

Yeah, I'm aware of the technology and its kinda scary. At the end, the talk of independents being pressured to switch over to the KDM system hit pretty close to home. My theatre can't afford one, but it's gotten to the point that new films no longer arrive on 35mm. It's the old legacy prints that we get now. Any new film will arrive on Blu Ray, as long as the distributors are willing to ship them instead of insisting that we switch over. It really does suck. On the other hand, I guess it makes it pretty clear that my current path of getting out of projection and into teaching is coming at the perfect time. With the timelines that the studios are giving, I'll be starting my first September as a teacher less than a year before 35mm becomes an historical curiosity.

I'll bring up the game that turned out to be my super surprise "hindsight game of 2009" (in that it was a game of 2009 that I played in 2010 and it retroactively became my game of 2009), Cryostasis. That game is fucking rad, and continues the amazingly weird atmosphere thing that Metro had, if you're down for more of it.

Very true. Just makes me sad to see them retire like that. I'm sure that the Universal Vault or whatever has a print for posterity's sake.

Incredibly. As in, I don't think a studio would actually SELL you the print ever, only lease it if you could convince them that you were doing occasional showings at some place for a long period of time. Really, it's so unrealistic as to not be worth looking into. When they charge several hundred dollars to lend it to you for one show, imagine how much they'd want to give it to you.

Ugh. Don't talk to me about diet. I eat well enough when I'm with my partner, as she's vegetarian and quite healthy so I do the same when I'm with her, but on my own my eating habits are horrible. I'm very much a convenience eater. Whatever I can microwave and wolf down while doing homework is what's for dinner. That said, I'm running 3 miles twice a week now (Tuesdays and Fridays) and bouldering and using a rowing machine when I can as well, so at least I'm covered on that end. I'd love to actually climb again, haven't since just after high school, but am strapped for finding a belay partner. I want to train the lady friend on the university wall, but she's kind of afraid of going up. One day...

That's weird. When I clicked on the quote button to preserve Rodi's "When I turned and walked away..." the forum quotes it as "When he turned and walked away..." Did my attempt at preserving a quote for humour's sake get scooped by Rodi's quick editing skills? Either way, went bouldering myself this morning. Damn is it nice to get up on a wall after a stupid 8am class. Figured as long as I was awake and at the university, I'd use the athletics stuff while I was there. Still home by 11am, and got some good climbing time in. Good day.

Haha. My favourite anecdote of recent weeks was my girlfriend telling me of a survey in which it was revealed that 2% of Americans believe that Mitt Romney's first name is short for "Mittens". No idea if it's true or not, in fact it's probably too awesome to be, but I laughed enough anyway.

Played a game of Red November last night with my board game crew. Buddy of mine just picked it up and we went through it for the first time. It's a co-op game (we had 5 players, I think it goes to 8?) in which your crew of soviet dwarves must survive for an hour while their submarine is exploding around them. We were unwittingly cheating pretty heavily for the first 30 "minutes" not realizing that as each new fire starts the asphyxiation counter is supposed to go up, so only the reactor heat, inadvertent nuclear missile launches, and engine room pressure were increasing and getting repaired for half the game until we figured out why the game seemed easier than it should be. As we were cheating, we won, though two of my friends did die on the last turn when putting out a fire in the engine room resulted in one of my friends passing out drunk (you need to take a shot to bolster your nerves if you're going to enter a room that's on fire without an extinguisher), the other accidentally blocking both exits, and the room flooding killing both of them. The other three of us survived and got out just as the kraken attacked. Needless to say, this game was pretty fun. Excited to give it another go. It's not Pandemic hard, but it certainly wasn't easy. Love me some co-op games. While I'm on this thread: I've been thinking about next year when I'll be taking over a classroom. Living in Calgary, snow days happen. Some kids still make it in though, and the teachers don't get the day off as they need to be there for whomever arrives. Thing is, with only around 5 or 6 kids, you can't really have a regular class. What always used to happen back in the day when I was in school was that the day was spent playing Connect 4 or similar nonsense. I would like to stock my classroom with games that are actually good, don't treat the kids like idiots, but are also sturdy enough for frequent manhandling by 10/11 year olds (not a lot of vital lose-able bits, for example) and are pretty quick to pick up. I'm thinking things like Carcassonne, maybe. Yeah, there are a lot of bits, but you can learn it in 5 minutes and all the pieces are reasonably large. Does anyone have tips on some specific games I should be on the lookout for? I want to start picking things up soon so that I can have a collection ready to go by next September.

It's pretty nice to have 'em, although I will say that trying to use the D-Pad and L button at the same time sucks, so some GBA games that require that don't translate as well as you'd hope. I never found the Stalfos too bad, but the first time I had to fight two Lizalfos in Skyward Sword I nearly went outside to kill the first passerby I saw. I got their pattern eventually, but shit did that hurt.

I suppose they could, but if you start getting sentimental about those things the space will run out fast. Also, it would be pretty damn expensive. As for mementos, they happen with reasonable regularity. I also, for instance, have a snipped bit of that brain worm thing being put into Chekov's head in Wrath of Khan.

Fun fact: When playing live, the modern-day Jay Mascis looks astonishingly similar to a three toed sloth.

Yeah, I got a memento. Unfortunately I didn't realize until I was almost done, so it's from the opening scene, but it's something.

Not sure where to put this, but the movies thread seems appropriate. We had a special event yesterday at my theatre where we played an original print of Jurassic Park. I know it was original because it still had a trailer for the Flintstones movie attached to the front of it, which was an awesome surprise. I love the film, so I took extra care with the handling of the print, even going out of my way to repair bits that were a little damaged but not enough that it would have any impact on the print's ability to play. Today, while getting it ready to ship back to the distributor, I learn that yesterday's show is the last one for that print. It's being recycled as soon as it gets home. I always kind of have in the back of my mind that with the coming of digital cinemas (people are now saying that only restoration houses will have 35mm anymore within 18 months) any time I play a print may be its last show, but to have it thrown into such stark relief with a movie I really love was a bummer. At least it was a good one, over 200 people attended and it ran perfectly. Sadly though, this copy of the film has held onto its last butt.

Distract yourself. Seriously. Either way, it's a good tactic. If you're deciding to wean yourself from her entirely, then distracting yourself is a fine start. If you want to work on it more, she needs some time to work some things out herself first anyway and keeping yourself busy with other things will give her some time to. I whole-heartedly endorse Pirate's "grab some substances and some friends" tactic. Get some dumb but awesome movies (Shaolin Soccer or something. Whatever doesn't take much thought but is super fun to watch) and spend a few evenings forgetting yourself. You'll be better for it.

As I said, still haven't seen it, so I have no basis for saying whether it is a good OR a bad OR a middling film. I just think that, due largely to the aesthetic, this isn't one you can really trust other people's judgement on and should take everything you hear about it with a grain of salt. Not that the people who say they enjoyed it didn't genuinely do so, and more power to them for it.

See, I've been really wary about seeing The Artist. It seems like one of those movies where regardless of the actual quality of the film, people will feel obligated to rave about it or risk losing their cred. Not that it actually is a bad film or even a not-brilliant one, I haven't seen it and can't make that call, but I don't think that what other people tell you about a film like that can ever really be trust-able.

Well, the StarFox and Zelda are both just the awesome N64 games, so you could catch up on that. You can play Super Mario Land 1 and 2 and Zelda: Link's Awakening on VC, which are spectacular (I still hold that LA is the best Zelda game). Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart are both fantastic examples of their respective series. Finally, a new Luigi's Mansion and Paper Mario are due by the end of the year. Yeah, I'd say if you're interested in checking out some good Nintendo games, this is a damn good place to start. Also, Pilotwings, but that may just be my nostalgia for the SNES game talking.

Man, Sal, you bring it HARD. With your blessing, I may PM you later with something on a related topic that's been bugging me but is a bit sensitive to put in a public thread.

Oh nice. I've had it for a while but was worried it would end up playing similarly to Child Of Eden, which is great in concept but keeps losing me because if I'm not standing on my couch I'm too close to the Kinect. If I can just be sitting on my couch playing, I should throw that in the 360.

Haha. Couldn't resist.

ElMuerte doesn't see things in Black and White, he sees them in Orange and Teal.
