Bloody awesome. Check it out. I found Asterios Polyp to be really interesting, as well as Stitches by David Small. I pretty much can't stand super-hero-y stuff, but do very much love a good graphic novel.

Are you... retiring BM Bronstring?

Pretty terrible, but that has nothing to do with all the parodies. It's popular, and a bunch of people are totally shameless. That's about all the reason you need for this crap.

You're an English major?

RockStar Social Club - Idle Thumbs

Shit, I didn't see this was 360. I've joined your crew, but have the game on PC. Dang. -
What is that? We're all about computer and video games here...

I got the vote every day thing! The only one I missed out of everything was "post a video" because I don't have any videos to post. Oh well.

I think "NOPE" may actually be the best safe word. Who says "nope" rather than "no" when they're still trying to have a sexy time? "Nope" is definitely not a sexy word.

Bought Modern Warfare 3 a couple of days ago when it was on sale, and due to the super short campaign, I just finished it. Y'know, given what that series started out as, I should be disappointed. Modern Warfare still resonates with me for certain moments, and kind of changed what I expected from how a game could present its story to me. That game said something. MW2 was fine, but nothing groundbreaking, and 3 continues that. I will say that certain moments affected me more than I thought they would have, but that was earned by attachment to MW1, not MW3. You could tell the one big "ooh" moment that they thought they had, and that I just ended up laughing at, but some of the smaller, Soap-and-Price moments were nice. The final mission also felt right to me, like this really was a suitable end to the whole thing. I'm glad I picked it up and played it, but given that it was over in barely 6 hours and I have no interest in the multiplayer (and it would have been over quicker if I hadn't had to replay two missions twice because of crashes to desktop) I'm also glad that I didn't pay $60 for it. It's still $30 for another hour for the Steam sale, and that's about borderline what I'd recommend it for. If you're interested in seeing everything wrap up, go for it. If you're not, you won't miss much. Also, for what it's worth, the credits were over in about 5 minutes. Hella respect for that, especially after finishing a few Ubisoft games earlier this year.

Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2
miffy495 replied to Wrestlevania's topic in Multiplayer Networking
Yeah, it popped up for me as I was logging into Portal 2 co-op. If only I'd known. I'm terrible at L4D, and only played a few of the thumb games back in the day, but I would've joined in anyway. -
This makes me very happy and I'm not sure why. Enjoy your demon steeds! Also, with all the stuff that I bought, what I've played the most this week is Portal 2 co-op, as a friend of mine picked it up on sale and wanted someone to play with. Beat the whole thing for the second time with him. Man, still a really good game.

Does anyone know if there's a point to those badges, or are they just kinda there?

Ok, so: Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet Botanicula Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers Stacking Binary Domain COD:BLOPS Dear Esther COD:MW3 The Walking Dead QUBE Legend of Grimrock Pixeljunk Eden Max Payne 3 I guess that could have been worse. Most were <$15. Hell, most were around $5. Only two that were over $20. I guess I did ok. Don't want to look at my next credit card statement though. And as for "vote every day", I found out that the sale had started on the second day, so poo.

Everyone should have bought this during the Steam sale. Ubisoft DRM or not, it's a goddamned fantastic game.

The Idle Book Log: unofficial recommendations for forthcoming Idle Thumbs Book Clubs.
miffy495 replied to makingmatter's topic in Books
Yeah, especially during the school year, I barely have time to get through a book a month. Hell, typically from September - April, recreational reading is off the table as everything I read is for class anyway. One a month is already going to be taxing to me in terms of finding time to actually read. -
As for the poverty thing, I have two angles on that. First, I don't buy dairy or meat often enough for it to really impact my wallet. Second, I have a girlfriend who works at the natural foods store and gets me 25% off my groceries, making it cheaper than going to the Safeway anyway. I certainly understand the "eating with your conscience costs more" angle, as it was a barrier for a long time, but I'm kind of lucky in that regard myself.

Yeah, I've had the same issue. Tried to play Gravity Bone four or five times, it's always crashed early on me. I'd love to understand the hype, but oh well.

Yeah, with regards to the "tech made by slavery practices" things, a big part of mitigating that is to not be constantly upgrading if you don't need to. I still use a seven year old flip phone, not because I can't get a newer one or don't see the appeal, I just haven't needed to upgrade. My battery lasts for three days, and I can make calls and text people all I want. The need for slavery to continue cranking these things out is driven by people who can't stand using an iPhone 4 now that the 4S is out, or whatever equivalent you may want. Just keep using what you have until it isn't viable anymore and suddenly we can produce tech at a rate that won't drive workers to suicide. As for dairy, I'm actually much harsher on that than I am on the eating of meat, due mostly to how the animals are treated. Pumped full of god-knows-what, milked to the point that what they produce is full of puss from the sores we've given them, etc, etc. I buy about a litre of local small farm milk (sorry if that sounds like a brag, Subbes. It's the only way I can feel ok about the milk I drink) about once a month, and the same for a carton of eggs. Given the choice between having factory farmed dairy and none at all, I always choose none. At work (Starbucks), we only have the giant 4-litre jugs of Dairyland milk, so anything I make for myself is soy only. A whole lot of the dairy industry is pretty gross.

Less good, but still fun. It feels like it's pushing against the frame that SR3 so successfully busts through. When it came out, I liked it a lot. I still have very fond memories of it. I don't know if I could go back after SR3 though. SR1 was pretty much a GTA:SA clone. SR2 showed that it wanted to be more but was still feeling out how to do that (and kept stuff like the "side missions to earn respect before you can unlock the next story mission" mechanic, which is a pain). SR3 is a goddamned revelation. Also, if you get SR2 on PC, be warned that it doesn't play nice with a 64bit OS. You'll need to do some file modification to keep it from running at double speed and being really dumb. I played it through on 360 and then got a free copy on Steam with a DOW2 pre-order, which was more trouble to get running than it was worth since I'd already played it. It will run fine once you've modified it, but you'll need to hunt around on forums and such to find the right tweaks to make to the right text files.

I've finally got around to reading Infinite Jest, and it's actually the first book that's made me wish I had a kindle or equivalent. Typically I agree with you, but with this one the sheer size of it means that bringing it to work to read on my breaks is causing damage to my copy, it's hard to find a comfortable way to sit with it for long periods, etc etc. On the other hand, I also need two bookmarks for this book (one to keep track of where I am in the book, another for the footnotes) and I can't imagine skipping back and forth as I have to do so often would be convenient on a tablet-y thing. Y'know what, in writing this I've decided I'm glad I have a real copy. Paper for life, yo.

Don't hate me, Subbes!

Goddamn, I only just finished all the DLC like three weeks ago and you're already making me want to go back just by mentioning it. There is a tier of "crazy shit" games that just appeals to me endlessly. Just Cause 2. Red Faction Guerilla. Saints Row the Third. Each of those games is easily one of my favourite things from the year they came out, typically being given my private goty award. So good. Also, if you like crazy and dumb things, pick up Driver San Fransisco while it's still $7.50. Great, great game. Kind of builds slowly, but the last three or four missions are some of the most ridiculous things a driving game has ever had me do.

My stepdad drives one, and I've taken it for a spin a couple of times. It's ok, but given that I'm a 6'3" guy, being as low to the ground as a car like that forces me to be just freaks me out. Can't stand even riding in the passenger seat. I hate to play into the Albertan stereotype, but mostly due to my size I think I'm going to be a truck/SUV driver. My girlfriend just bought a used civic and I can't even ride in that without having my head at a 45 degree angle and still hitting the roof. I love driving my SUV because I fit in it. The Miata/MX-5 is a cute little sports car, and I do kind of envy the convertible thing, but as soon as I actually get in one I don't like it anymore.

Yeah, Nachimir put the reason I continue to eat meat pretty well. I consider at this point any meat that was not raised in a cruelty-free environment (or the best that a farmer can guarantee, anyway, as it's hard to prove that) to be "shit meat" now, so we may be on the same page. I heard about that lab-grown hamburger they made a couple of months back though, and would totally switch over completely to "never-was-alive" meat in a second given the opportunity. That development excites me a lot, and would certainly help to alleviate some of my cognitive dissonance.
