The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
miffy495 replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
Silicon Knights sued Epic because they claimed that they didn't provide enough support with the Unreal Engine while SK was making Too Human. Epic counter-sued on the grounds of "that's bullshit". -

I had 4, but gave one to my stepdad. Now I have 3. -
It's kinda why I burned out while playing ME3. I actually really liked ME2 the first time through (though I still preferred 1), and when I went through it for a second time earlier this year I still dug it but it became a bit of a slog near the end. By the time I started 3 I was just done with it for a while. Still, you're right at the end. Just fight the giant Terminator and wait a while before you consider playing 3.

I thought ODST was fantastic, and bought Reach when it went under $40. I've just started playing it as of last week when I was looking for a way to procrastinate faced with a soul-crushing mountain of homework. I'll probably play Halo 4 in about 2 years. I've always enjoyed the Halo games, I've just always played them at least a year after they've come out.

This is the wrong forum for you. We hate video games here. If someone plays them, we'll probably find them and make embarrassing photoshops of them. Or Toblix will.

I lost 7 hours of Darksiders 2 back in August. I actually replayed during what little free time I've had since school started, and I'm now on the final dungeon of the game. I still like it, but goddamn that was frustrating.

Shit. My bad. How about Twins then? I remember that movie existed...

Man, you haven't updated in FOREVER. Did your book deal finally go through? Blogs tend to die down a bit once the publishers come 'round.

And you all forgot Predator. Philistines.

Granted, I'm still 5 months out from finishing my teaching degree, but I have been working for it for seven years (counting my bachelor's degree), so maybe my say is worth something. That is: Of course Lucas isn't a bigot or a tyrant for donating money, but that doesn't give him a free pass. If the money is used well (a bunch of it probably won't be, but fuck it, that's what bureaucracy does) it will be great. In large part, it depends on where it goes. I'm always given to shudder a bit at the presence that Apple has bought in schools, for example, and that the schools take it without considering the impact on the kids. Still, as long as the teachers are conscious of where the money is from and what implications that has (I'm a fan of critical pedagogy, can you tell?) and encourage their students to be as well, there's nothing wrong with it at all. Earlier tonight, I was having a conversation where a friend interpreted a thing I said as me basically using the phrase "sheeple" (a phrase which causes me to instantly assume anyone I hear saying it is a complete tool) and I had to clarify by saying "There's absolutely nothing wrong with being a follower as long as you're aware that that's what you're doing and why". I feel similarly about "corporate education" or whatever you want to call it. Money is helpful, regardless of where it comes from. Just try to keep yourself informed and thinking about things while you're spending it. If you're spending it on kids, make sure the kids are thinking about it too. Donating the money sure is a nice gesture anyway. It's a good thing that he did, and as you pointed out, weird considering that's all he ended up with from the deal (near as I can tell, anyway). That somehow makes it seem nicer. It doesn't give him carte blanche, but nothing ever gives anyone carte blanche in my view. I'm as sceptical as anyone of the big corporate charities, but they still do some good out there, and that's better than nothing. Could he have chosen a worthier cause/better means to support his cause? Probably. Does that negate the good that he is doing? Nope. Finally, I am a teacher who will call Lucas a bigot, but that's because of the way that minority stereotypes are used as alien races in the prequel trilogy, nothing to do with the money. Also, that's beside the point.

This is out? Hell and fucking damn yes. I am going to Amazon right now. Love me some ZoE. Even played the turn-based strategy GBA game. It was pretty good, if incredibly easy.

To be fair, that quote was from Joystiq. It was only attributed to IGN for comedic effect.

You guys. This game. This game, you guys. Shit. I just had one of the more emotionally affecting moments that a game has given me this year (still haven't played Walking Dead, though by reputation it will trump this) when I was playing as a fucking deer. I'd gone to so much effort to get to this herd of gazelle. I'd hid under a recycling bin to sneak by hyenas (Metal Deer Solid!), watched my brother sacrifice himself so that I had a chance to escape a cheetah, and had stealthed my way past a group of fucking velociraptors in order to get there. I'd actually held my breath in the real world a couple of times because I was so invested in this little fawn surviving. Then I get to these goddamned gazelles and they completely snub me. I'm an orphaned deer whose brother just died to get me to safety, and these gazelles just look at me and turn the other direction. Jerks. Also, I unlocked a pig. I will play as that tomorrow or Saturday. This game is fucking great.

Was the CD key already linked to an account or something?

Oh shit. I should probably install that then. Shows how much I've kept up with stuff. To the Steams!

Hey, the original was plenty weird too.

I thought I'd heard something about PC purchasers getting upgraded to the HD version whenever it finally comes out for PC? If my memory is correct, I'm still going to hold out for that.

Question about a film discussed in "The Idle Thumbs Podcast"
miffy495 replied to Koholos's topic in Idle Banter
I've seen Baraka, but unfortunately not on 70mm. I actually was the only full time projectionist at Calgary's only reputable repertory for about 3 years before it unfortunately fell under new management and became mostly a second-run theatre that stopped being interesting. We were not set up for 70mm though, so the print I ran for our screening was a restored 35mm. That was awesome though. Didn't know it was the same director. I should definitely check out the -qatsis. -

"Koi and his Goatse" - by Philip Glass. In all seriousness, I've only ever seen Powaqatsi when I was forced to watch it in 9th grade by an English teacher, so I was definitely in a not-conducive-to-watching-that-movie frame of mind. I'm interested in checking the trilogy out now that I'm an honest to god adult, so that blu ray pack sounds awesome. Thanks for the heads up. -
I have a house guest right now, sleeping next to my PS3. Otherwise I'd probably be playing this game. It's all good though, I'm doing homework like a responsible person. Still though, Tokyo Jungle...
