How do I friend you on the Wii U? It seems like you'd be worth paying attention to...
-
Hey guys, this game is still pretty sweet. I've been on and off with it, but this past week have started getting back in. I'm finding the DLC is a great way to keep motivated, as the songs that the game is suggesting to me aren't often/always my bag. That said, I never would have known who Dan Auerbach is without this game, and I find I quite like his stuff. As for things like picking technique, that I was concerned about way back in January when I posted in this thread last, I find the game actually is helping me with this. Not overtly, but the fact that to keep up with what the difficulty is starting to give me I have to find a way to pick effectively is actually causing me to do so. I'm getting some dexterity that I just didn't have before, and that's awesome. Again, if you own this game, keep playing it. I am now nearly halfway through the year, and rather than give up on my resolution, I can actually see myself improving a good deal. Neat!

I was about to say pretty much exactly this. Get on it, Wii U owners. I just played a bunch of Super Metroid in my bed on the gamepad. Rad.

I was cleaning up my apartment tonight while streaming the Ottawa/Pittsburgh game through my PC (now that I've discovered that CBC livestreams HD coverage of playoff hockey games, I may never need to pay for cable in my life. That was actually the ONLY thing I missed watching) and discovered the box that had all my old gamecube stuff in it. As I recently got a Wii U and have left the old Wii to live at my partner's house, I was struck by the realization that if I don't hook up ol' purple, I may lose the ability to play GCN games at home. So I got everything together, and after the game I lost the rest of the evening to playing Gamecube for no reason other than that I came across the system today. Guys, Mario Sunshine is still pretty all right.

Where I live "Oriental" is fine if used to refer to an object, but offensive if used to describe a person. As a result "Oriental ramen" is ok, but "That oriental dude over there" is not. Again, probably due to the large co-association of British and Canadian history and the tradition of colonialism that this implies, whatever can be done to separate ourselves from that shit is for the best.

I met most of the internet people I've ever met at PAX 2010. I ended up actually having a really fun time at the Thumbs and GWJ meetups, but when face to face with Spaff, who I had been talking to online for years (about six years, actually. First on Mojo, then here) I drew a blank so quickly. There was a "Oh holy shit, you're Miffy!" moment, and some talking, but my mind just kind of went away after and I left the whole thing feeling like I came off like the most boring and clueless person in the world. A pity, as Spaff seemed like (and still likely is) a rad dude. Given the fact that he hasn't been 'round these parts for quite some time, I feel like I'd be unlikely to run into him again at PAX this year and remedy that impression. That is a bummer to me. If you're going to PAX prime, expect to feel equally awkward after encountering me in a Seattle bar!

When I bought my Wii U, there was an 8 year old kid walking past with his dad, pretty much seething with jealousy. My only thought was "Haha. I'm 25 and can buy things. Sucker."

Over a year after purchasing it, I have just finished my first playthrough of Diablo 3. I think I actually did like it, but goddamn did they do a lot that frustrated me. The bad has been covered over and over again in various places, and you don't need me to spell it out for you. As such, I'll just leave my own personal evaluation of the game as the following sentence: For all the game's flaws, hell if it ain't satisfying to drop a giant ghost bell on your enemies' heads over and over again.

This is but one reason that man is considered a national treasure in Canada.

My idle thumbs shirt hasn't been relevant since the Nintendo Wii stopped being the "Revolution" and started being the "Wii". I suppose I also have my backer shirt, but I assume most people here have those.

I finished the DMC reboot just now. It was dumb, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The traversal felt really good, and the environments were frequently crazy as balls, so I could overlook other things that would have frustrated me in a lesser game. I thought some of the challenges were pretty cool. One that stands out involves polishing off four enemies (two weak, two mid-strength) without using the same attack twice. That really got me into the combat system and taught me how to use it well, and I thought it was a great little side thing. Recommended if you can get it in the $20 - $30 range.

Yeah, "what is our role" assumes that we have one, which is honestly pretty fucking arrogant. We're a result of a bunch of pretty damn random happenings, and whatever we ascribe meaning to may as well be our role. For example, tonight it was my role to drink three 40s of Korean beer and do a lot of karaoke, then come home and write this. Role fulfilled.

Full on film noir delivery. It's the only way.

Only post the script at the end of the URL, not the whole thing. -
Fuck 'em. They can expect what they want, and your understated, introspective Flashheart will blow them away.

My favourite from working at HMV was always "Mom! I missed the plane!"

Yeah, that's pretty much the equilibrium we arrived at. I mostly eat meat now for a special occasion or because it's free (marked out sandwiches at work, for example). I have always really liked veggies and have no problem with them being the vast majority of my diet, but I like meat too much to give it up altogether.

It's a bummer to me if Daiya really is the best for melting, because what really started getting me down on using it for things is how plasticky and gross it makes nachos as opposed to the real deal. That's really my main problem with going vegetarian. It's not a difficult thing for my partner, as she never really liked meats and eggs and such to begin with. I absolutely love them though, and have never found substitutes to come anywhere near satisfying. Actually, seitan is one of the few that bucks this trend. There's a "vegan jerky" that uses seitan, and to me it's as close to emulating the experience of eating ribs (minus the bone, of course) that any substitute I've ever seen has come. I really like that stuff.

My girlfriend has progressed from vegetarian to vegan over the last year or so which means that while I still eat meat myself, I eat a lot less of it. As you mention Daiya, I have to ask, is there any other alternative? She loves the stuff, but I can't stand it. Finding a middle ground cheese-substitute when I'm cooking for her would be great.

Completely changed. Even the islands had different names. Sorry to burst your bubble. I would say it's likely that the names Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas will return, but everything else is likely gone.

Idle Thumbs 103: A Person-Shaped Thing is a Person
miffy495 replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Yeah, I don't know if we can really judge any new console until at least a year in. Hell, if you'd told me two years ago that there would soon come a time when I play my PS3 nearly every day and only sometimes contemplate plugging my 360 back in, I'd have laughed in your face. That's where we are today though. I trust enough in Nintendo that I bought their system last month, and I'm waiting to see where they take me. Even with the generally slow time that the Wii had, every time I had a new game to play on it, I had a fantastic time. It was, for me, a seldom played but never disappointing experience. I hope that the Wii U will, in time, correct the first half of that statement, but I trust that even if Nintendo can't fix that part, the second will hold true. -
I beat two whole games today! First off, I'm really late to the party with Mass Effect 3, but I wanted to have all the DLC before playing the game all the way through, as that really changed a lot about 2. Since I'd played one of the DLC packs already in 3, I decided to wait until they'd released all of them for this one. Full paragon, good ending, etc etc. Y'know what, the ending was kind of dumb, but I don't mind. It felt like, by that point, they'd built the setting up to a point that a fairy tale-ish ending worked well enough. I enjoyed my time with that game thoroughly, even though it took me roughly a year start to finish to get through it. Now I get to wonder where they're going to take the series next, and the rumours of Space Cop have me very excited. I love the universe they created, and small stories within it would be fantastic. Second, I finished off Binary Domain, which I'd arrived at the last chapter of at March Break, and now finally had time to PLAY the last chapter of. That game's story got way more Philip K Dick than I expected, and I really respect what it tried to do. The gameplay was a weird mix of Gears of War and Dead Space (cover shooter + dismemberment) and was enjoyable, if a bit repetitive. The story made it worth it. Check this game out if you haven't yet.

I quite liked what I've played of the game, and do intend to finish it, but ended up taking a break about halfway through the "dark" section and haven't gone back yet. Still, I enjoy the game.

Recommend me some good two-player co-ops! (Please!)

I had fun playing EDF with you and others last year, so if your buddy is down for that kind of dumb and you're up for more, I know you've got that in your steam library. Otherwise I've been trying to finish off Mass Effect 3 lately to get that game off my guilt pile, and have found playing the multiplayer with a buddy to boost my "readiness rating" has been surprisingly fun. Maybe give that one a go, if you're not too Origin-averse? -
Agreed about quality. That's the reason I still have bongo controllers in the sea chest/coffee table in my living room. That said, I really enjoy all the DKC games as well, so .
