Yeah, even a throwback level on an airship would be awesome. And you kind of proved my point with the using of the mega mushroom to beat Bowser. You could go the classic route and hit the switch, or even just hurl a bunch of fireballs at him. The mushroom is totally unnecessary.

Oh, ok. And if I just wanted to run Scummvm, what would be required then? That link you put up was all about flashing the thing to run the games.

Hey, don't talk to me about sitting through long games in a deskchair. I played through all of the Metal Gear Solid series right at this very desk, on the same monitor I'm using now. Yeah, I was sore afterwards, but that didn't change the quality of the games.

So rig it up to plug into a computer monitor and speakers. I did it, the sound out of my little 2.1 secondary speaker set is way better than my TV, and you get to geek out and mess with all sorts of hookups. Good times.

I haven't used it for anything but novelty yet...

Jesus Christ, I have to go as far as shorting the damn thing? Hell with that, I'll get a cheap old pocket PC and run ScummVM on that.

This is... more than 2.5 hours long... WHY? Goddammit, I'll watch it anyway, but tomorrow after class. Now is Colbert time.

Damn, were we simply blind all these years to the fact that it was taking them forever to get it right? EDIT: Hmmm... thinking. Wait a minute. Anybody have an image of the japanese box? I'm betting it's a lot closer to the Bomberman we know.

How much extra equipment is necessary for this? I'd love to play Sam and Max on my lite while on the bus or something, but I don't want to have to worry about too much hassle. Also: Dan, how could you not be interested in the DS? Even with all the gaming opportunities I have available to me when I'm at home, I'll often just end up sitting on the couch playing on the DS. It's easily my favorite of any current-gen tech, and has so much variety. You should really look into it, man.

The cannon is accessed in the first Tower. Kinda tricky, but if you want that warp to World 5, you've gotta work for it. I've almost finished my run through the main game, although I still need to get to World 7 (I believe it involves beating Petey Piranha as Mini Mario, like you had to do with the boss of World 2 to get to World 4) but I've only got 3 levels and the final castle left in World 8, so I'm pretty near the end. I probably won't have much more gaming time today, but by tomorrow night I should have seen the credits at least once. Then the quest to find all the coins and secret paths begins... EDIT: Dammit, I keep on forgetting those spoiler tags.

yay! ...although my PS2 works just fine. Why does this excite me again? Whatever. Good news anyway.

Kinda cool. I gotta find me an adapter so that I can plug my SG into a USB port. Anyone know where I can find such a thing?

:hah: :hah: BAHAHAHAHA! Very enjoyable, thanks for the link.

I love the avatars so much right now. N0wak, give it a shot. It doesn't really work with mine either because of the whole "cartoon robot" thing, but I still like it enough to keep.

yeah, the music is nothing special, but I love that the goombas and koopas will dance to it. EDIT: Whups, forgot the spoiler tags on the hint for Moos.

Hmmm... I never played any of the Wario Lands, despite how good I've heard they are. I just beat the tower halfway through world 5 now, and the only thing I really feel is amiss is the ability to fly. With SMW's cape and SMB3's tail, it felt like flying items had become a full part of the series. I can understand the whole "get back to Mario's roots" thing, what with the flags at the end of levels and stuff. Hell, I really like that. I just miss flying, dammit. Being able to go into a turtle shell and wreak havok is cool, and I like the addition, but it just ain't the same.

*moment of silence for your plight* Damn, now I wanna play 4 swords. Firstly, get the game. Secondly, find other people with GBAs to play it with. Thirdly, find a time when we're not all working. Fourthly, to hell with it. It's too much effort.

A quick idea for you. On that head, she needs a mustache. Just a thought.

That makes sense. Classic Bomberman is by far more in line with the Nintendo universe's aesthetic than Snake, so why the hell not? The main thing I'm looking for in a new Smash Bros is a Samus stage that's actually worth playing on. Goddamn, why does she always get hosed with the crappy gimmick stages? (Ice Climbers, of course, are even worse off, but I they're not much fun to play as either.)

Twin Snakes was fucking great. Although it may be that that was the first Metal Gear Solid game that I played (not the first Metal Gear though. I started with Ac!d) so the whole atmosphere was new to me. I still have to finish Snake Eater, now that I think about it. I'd just gotten to the final Boss fight (capitalized intentionally. Those who've played understand.) and then got sucked into Phoenix Wright. (finished it two days ago! great ending) Other games I may never finish but enjoy: God of War, Kingdom Hearts, Ninja Gaiden Black. Oh well...

How's this? It was really hard to even get her to fit on Gir's body, but I gave it the best that 15 minutes would allow. Yeah, that is downright creepy. Although that moment where she's right up in front of the camera and the single tear comes out shocked me. That seemed quite realistic to me. It was the only bit in the whole thing that did, but nevertheless it was there. If this guy is so obsessed with movies why doesn't he start making those instead? I actually enjoyed Indigo Prophecy, but still...

Yeah, but it wasn't very good so they decided to try again.

Stories in games. A necessity, possibility or just an annoyance?
miffy495 replied to Almos's topic in Video Gaming
Score! I never really thought about the classifications, but I guess that for the most part I'm something of a narratologist. (oh god, I actually used the word. Fucking shoot me.) You say that games can be turned from a game into art by virtue of a story, and seem to think of that as a bad thing. What's wrong with appreciating a good work of art? You gotta pick the focus for yourself. What do you have more fun with? It could be a good game either way, it's just that you'll attract a different audience depending on the direction you go. And Twilo, sorry to burst your bubble, but I actually enjoy the GTA storyline. Little things like the fact that your appartment in portland in LCS happens to be the burnt-out shell of a building in GTA3 make that universe work for me, and the characters always interest me. I think if you're looking for proof that Ludology and Narratology can be reconciled, that game is one of the better examples.
