I was also ashamed to think of what high school me would have thought of her, but in a different way. She and I are the same age, so our middle school era was the same. Thinking back to myself and my gamer friends at the time, I absolutely wouldn't blame a girl for having covered up that she was interested in games. Not because she would have been viewed as "different" in a bad way, but because of the extent that our group would likely have fetishized her. "Oh my god! A girl who plays games?!?" would have instantly got her a LOT of unwanted attention from a lot of guys who felt entitled to reciprocity because of their obvious (SARCASM) intelligence (hey there internet communities, sound familiar?). Hell, maybe this is just what happens when you mix puberty and early attraction with the general desire for people to have the same interests as you that she expressed herself in the comic. I now kind of enjoy having a hobby separate from my partner. She has comic books, I have games, and we are both content to have that place to go when we want alone time with occasional crossovers when something is of particular quality. The point: The realization that even if she was LIKED for liking games the attention would likely have been creepy and overbearing really bummed me out.
  3. Costume Quest 2

I liked CQ 1 a lot (to this day, the ONLY PS3 game I have the platinum trophy in), but never got it together to play the DLC. Probably going to buy this once I start getting paid from the new gig, but with being in paperwork-limbo right now, I have no idea when that will be.
  4. Portal II coop pyramid scheme

I'm a schoolteacher and live in Mountain Time Zone, so am pretty much out of commission between 7am and 5pm on weekdays, when I'm busy with school stuff. Finding time to game is not easy, but Portal 2 co-op is rad.
  5. I made a math sheet for my students today where they had to use the rounding and estimation that they've been practicing to compile a selection of things from a list that I should probably spend $40 on rather than SSB3DS. Little do they know, I've already got it on the way from Amazon.
  6. Portal II coop pyramid scheme

I've played through it twice before. Both plays were super fun, but the first time through was definitely what stuck with me (for better or worse, co-op with Patters is always memorable).* It does totally hold up on a second run though, for those considering it. I personally have no idea when I would schedule something like this, but would consider it as it's been several years since I played a Portal of any kind. *I'm kidding. I love you, Patters. Fuck you, Patters.

Shit. So the new job I got two weeks ago is going pretty well, but there is a technicality. On Monday, the board emailed me a contract to sign. I printed it out and signed it and thought I was done. Turns out, there is an extra "confirm acceptance on our convoluted online system" step that I didn't know about. This expired this morning, and I discovered it about 8 hours after it expired. As a result, I can't accept it now and I don't know if I have a job right now despite having put in two weeks of work there. I've emailed my principal to try and figure this out, so we'll see. I'm quickly running out of money, so I need this to work out like, now. Whee!

Yeah, especially for young people who only have that to go on, it's tricky. In a weird way, I think being socially awkward saved me from making mistakes because of what I'd seen before. My girlfriend and I were both teenage virgins when we met, so I've only had the one partner and don't have a lot else to go on here, but the first time we went for it the last things we said before were: Her: So... I guess this is the part where we fuck? Me: Yeah, ok. Sounds like a plan. Super romantic. "Enthusiastic" consent may be the wrong term for it, but there was no ambiguity about us both saying "now is the time." In the seven years since, there have only been a few times when one of us hasn't asked the other "hey, you wanna?" first, usually these involved a lot of alcohol. I was, however, pushier when I was younger, not being over my socialization as a North American boy yet, and that led to some questionable situations that I have come to regret in retrospect. Even then, while questionable, there was still consent. I can't imagine someone going for it without at least a "we cool?" beforehand. And "we cool?" is a degree of casual reserved for long-term partners. Earlier in a relationship, especially the first few times, I actually have a really hard time understanding how someone wouldn't WANT to make as sure as possible that both parties are really into it. I guess that's a roundabout way of me wondering what exactly qualifies as "enthusiastic"? I hope I've established my feminist cred enough to not sound like a shithead for saying this, but I'm uncomfortable with using subjective terms like "enthusiastic" in legal terminology, so when people ask for enthusiastic consent laws it makes me uncomfortable. Dating someone who has struggled with depression for a long time probably has something to do with it, because this means that there are long periods of time where she is unable to muster what most would call enthusiasm for anything. Hell, even when she initiates things in these situations, it's not with enthusiasm but with a "hey, this could be a thing to do." I'd be more comfortable with terminology like "unambiguous consent" or something like that. For all I know, that's what the term "enthusiastic consent" actually means and it's just poorly named, but if that's the case then this needs to be made clearer. Can anyone help clarify this for me? Earlier in the thread I remember people expressing the stance that, especially in a long-term relationship, sometimes you need to go along with your partner even if you're not feeling it at that particular moment just for the health of the relationship, and I wonder how that kind of situation fits into that discussion.

  10. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Thanks for the link. Since Teacher/Student is an option in the drop down menu (get 'em using your tech young!) I exploited my job in the letter. My contribution: "Hello, I am a fifth grade teacher at a middle school in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. While I rarely have time to actually play any video games, I follow the industry and as such the recent fuss kicked up by the "gamergate" movement has been on my radar. I came across a news story today that your company pulled advertising from Gamasutra recently in response to a letter writing campaign by these people. I would like to register my disappointment in this decision. This movement is one which has, from all evidence I have seen, been a front to legitimize the appalling behaviour of a group of cyber bullies, and I worry that these people will be emboldened by this. Whatever your actual concerns with Gamasutra, this will be seen as a political act by their movement and will add fuel to a fire which has already burned brightly with death threats, rape threats, and invasions of privacy, to name only a few of the tactics this movement has been using and proudly associated with. I worry very much that in pulling your advertisements, you have given them a way to claim justification of these actions. While I know that the voice of one Canadian English teacher is not going to compare to the might of a letter writing campaign by an internet movement, I felt compelled to write to you in response to this development. I have certainly lost respect for your company in light of it, and will be hoping for better news in the future. Thank you for your time, - MY NAME"

I told my girlfriend of my plans to purchase an Xbone for this. She is behind it. All I need to do is get paid for my new job. Everything is falling into place...

Safest answer is pretty much always don't wear the same thing two days in a row. Just don't do it, man.

Yeah, as a gifted teacher, the first priority I had was to make shit actually hard to deal with. My first three science lessons were full of lies (and designed to include experiments that would directly contradict things that I said) until finally one of them called me on it and we started breaking down the importance of actually thinking critically about information you're given and being curious enough to find out for yourself. I was motivated in this due to going through a program myself and remembering how bullshit most of it was.

I learned just now when watching Metal Gear Scanlon episode 10 that Dan Ryckert was put in a gifted program back when he was in school. He suddenly makes so much more sense to me. In my experience, both having gone through a gifted program myself as a child and as a teacher in one last year, a gifted kid can pretty much be defined as someone who is so good with their words that, being able to bluff their way through whatever, they never needed to learn how to actually work. When people looked at my writing in university, they always assumed that I put SO MUCH time into it. In reality, it was most often a first draft and usually written the night before. I just happened to be pretty damn good with my words. I got an honours degree with a 3.86 GPA while feeling like I never had to work that hard for it based on this ability. Math and logic related courses would routinely kick my ass until I learned how to work to succeed in them. Dan never took those, so only had the easy part of that experience and never learned how to work. He also enjoys dumb things. Dan being a talented guy who's world-view is influenced by the fact that things always came easily to him (and never realizing that he is an exception) pretty much perfectly explains him in my mind. It wasn't until I started tutoring that I realized how much quicker I understood things than is the norm and how lucky I was. If I hadn't done that, I'd probably be very Dan-like myself.

I haven't listened to the bombcast since March (intend to still, but backlogged) so I have never heard Ryckert on the 'cast. I am a GB subscriber though, and have found his chemistry with Drew to be really great in the videos they do together. Drew being potentially the smartest member of the crew paired against Dan being Dan makes for some really funny moments. I think Dan is an idiot, but have not yet personally seen something that makes me think he is offensively so rather than just kind of amusing to watch flail about. On that note, I'm not sure how much I really want to go down this rabbit hole, but what do you mean about Jeff's political views? From comments that I've seen and the impression I get of the guy, he seems like he's sticking up for the right people when necessary and has always seemed to otherwise just keep that out of things. I've assumed that he's more liberal than not and his supporting of Patrick when he goes off and attempts to make statements has bolstered this. Am I missing something super sinister here?
  16. Gripe about/discuss stuff you have to read for school

I have never had a quote more scream bullshit to me than in my required Continental Philosophy course when I read Heidegger's masterpiece of a sentence: "May the worlding of worlds be the nearest of the nearing that nears." I actually enjoyed some of the writers in that class, and don't view Continental Philosophy with the same disdain that many of the other students I went to school with did, but Heidegger and Hegel can both seriously go fuck themselves.

I swear to god, as soon as I start getting paid for this new job, I'm buying an Xbox One for this game. No joke.

Why do you feel the need to front then? Can't "Jason" be good enough on his own? Anyway, welcome.
  19. Life

I got hired by a school board the day before my graduation ceremony. It is indeed terrifying. In my second year, it is not yet less terrifying. Don't know if there's advice to give though. Welcome to the world of feeling like a fraud forever!
  20. Idle Food - Cooking!

Ok, THAT looks like something I would happily eat. In fact, judging by the way my mum used to modify spaghetti sauce when I was a kid, she was basically making Cincinnati Chili using spaghetti sauce as a base.
  21. Wizaaaaaards!!

Last provincial election, a super-conservative and really shitty political party emerged in Alberta called the Wild Rose Party (the wild rose being the province's flower). This means that our newest license plate revision has resulted in a change of our decades-long slogan of "Wild Rose Country". Good job, politics.
  22. Idle Food - Cooking!

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!
  23. Idle Food - Cooking!

Someone please explain what makes this either Chili or Cincinnati. I have never heard of this food before it came up in this thread, and am now slightly horrified.
