  1. DS Games

Fucking genius advert, man. I played Hotel Dusk for a while on my plane ride last Friday. Got about two hours in, then switched to Elite Beat Agents for the remainder of the flight. (Damn Jumping Jack Flash is tormenting me. Only thing I haven't beaten yet on Expert...) I quite enjoyed what I played, but I'm not willing to put in a full verdict yet. Definitely enjoyable though.
  2. Electronic Arts: the positive thread

Hey, curling is awesome too. Was watching the Tournament of Hearts just yesterday. I don't think anyone is outright singing the praises of EA just yet, but there's nothing wrong with a bit of optimism with regard to them. They were decent once, they may yet rise above their recent rut.
  3. Does the Wii nead *real games* ?

I haven't played the GCN version, so I can't really compare. I mean tacked on as in unneccessary. While the aiming was fantastic and very nice to see, the sword controls just felt goofy most of the time. There were incredibly satisfying moments during boss fights when I was up and swinging with all my might to bring that fucker down, but the rest of the time I was just flicking my wrist around feeling dumb. Don't get me wrong, the game was great. Still, it felt superfluous. I'm worried about the new Mario Strikers being the same way. I loved the first game (fucking great at parties) and am wondering how it's going to translate over. The game will definitely be fun, but I'm waiting for Battallion Wars because it'll be ground up. We've seen that the Wii can handle games made for other systems, but not that it can really get its own yet. I'm sure it'll prove itself. Question is, what'll it take?
  4. Electronic Arts: the positive thread

Bah, until EA makes a CFL game, they can't be considered truly hardcore in the sports market. Canadian Football kicks American Football's ass.
  5. Does the Wii nead *real games* ?

Zelda was a great "real" Wii game, but the controls did feel a little tacked on. For me, what's really going to prove that it'll work will be Battallion Wars. When that hits, we'll see how a single player experience built specifically for the Wii will do.
  6. Must-play PlayStation 2 games

Yeah, I'm ashamed to admit I'm the same way. Really, all the PS3 has going for it right now is Kojima and Devil May Cry 4. 'Course, I waited 4 years to play MGS2 before I got my PS2, so maybe I can wait a while to play MGS4. The question is: how long is a while? (And how long until used PS3s are cheap enough that I can justify it?) Note: My PS3 will be used. I'm still pissed off about LikSang and I'm not going to buy one new. My money will not go directly to Sony, although I've accepted that it'll probably end up there eventually anyway.
  7. DS Games

The double pack is very nice. I didn't really get into Castlevania until about a year and a half ago, (well, I had IV on the SNES, but you know what I mean) so I had to play catch up and the double pack was fantastic for that. I'm not sure how easily you'll still be able to find it, but it's definitely one to consider.
  8. http://www.computerandvideo games.com/article.php?id=158009 Ok. Granted, this is anything but official, and yes I already own it on Gamecube, but still. Fuck yes. HD Ikaruga with achievements? Between this, Worms, Alien Hominid, and Castle Crashers, Live is rapidly becoming reason enough to own a 360. I think I need to boot up the Wii with my old disk and give it another spin. If you'll excuse me... PS. :woohoo:
  9. Must-play PlayStation 2 games

I'd go for it if it weren't for three facts. 1. No Guitar Hero hookup available on PS3 (although this is soon to be moot with the 360 one's release) 2. The PS3 is already out in my region, so I can't take advantage of this. 3. I've always been abnormally careful about how much I research games before buying them, and as such can't think of 10 I'd never want to replay. 3 or 4 maybe, but 10? Not happening. If none of those are a problem for you, I'd go for it. Sony even claims that they've fixed the whole "PS2 games look like crap on PS3" problem that people were complaining about last month, so that should be ok. Good luck to you.
  10. Hell, at least they're still making games. I may have to pick up the increasingly cheap God Hand to play over the little break I have this reading week in celebration.
  11. A Thread About The Nintendo Wii

I was given GT Pro Series for Christmas and the controls really aren't that bad once you get the hang of them. Still, when I played the demo Excite Truck at EB, I was able to immediately grasp it. GT Pro Series took hours. And the gaming experience afterwards really wasn't worth it anyway.
  12. I refuse. I will simply pretend that I'm a sullen goth kid and stand in the corner nodding my head arhythmically against whatever beat I can find. That'll show you. EDIT: Fuck it. AH GOTS THA MUSIC IN ME!!! :woohoo:  :owned:
  13. Must-play PlayStation 2 games

Yeah. I've got a plane trip on Friday and I think now I may have to grab Portable Ops to give a spin on the 5-ish hour flight. It's not like I'll be taking my homework on the plane. It's reading week dammit, I'm taking a bit of a vacation. Metal Gear here I come.
  14. Holy crap holy crap holy crap. Ikaruga on 360!

One can only hope. Also, one hopes that whoever dropped this news is going to be able to escape with most major organs intact. I'd be fucking terrified of MS's lawyers.
  15. So what's Crackdown like?

I downloaded the demo and quite enjoyed it. Full impressions contained in this here post. All I can say in addition to that is that you should probably download the demo. It's big, but worth it.
  16. A Thread About The Nintendo Wii

I'm anticipating something similar to what we saw with the DS. The first 9 months or so will be mostly just the developers feeling the system out, then around late August the really kickass stuff will start to hit. There will be brief flashes of awesome before then, but the system will really come into its own towards the later end of the year. For now, Rayman, Trauma Center, and Warioware are your guaranteed good. Elebits is fun but not quite up to its potential. I'd still reccommend it, but don't expect the world of it. Sonic's out this week, so check some reviews. As for Zelda, I know it's really not your thing from what you've played, and honestly this is a fanservice re-do of Ocarina of Time. I enjoyed it immensely, but I love OoT. I'd give it a rental at least and see if you can get a feel for it. It's a fantastic Zelda, but that may not mean a whole lot to you.
  17. Must-play PlayStation 2 games

You can grab the enemy's head? Crap, that would have been useful. I never knew that was an option. When I played 3, it was after a marathon session of Twin Snakes, MGS:2 Substance, and then Subsistence, so I guess I was locked into the play style from the previous games and never bothered to try. As such, I'd say it was probably a new addition. With regard to the big list just posted, I was thinking of saying Devil May Cry myself earlier, as I quite enjoy the games. (Yes, even 2. It's short and kinda rushed, but it's still good while it lasts) From what I've heard though, not a lot of people think the pre-DMC3 ones have aged all that well. I don't really get that, as I didn't play DMC1 until last year myself and found it quite good, but the general concensus does not seem to be in line with my findings on the series. I'll admit the jumping puzzles can be unbelievably frustrating, but the game is still, overall, very fun. Now that the 3 pack is priced reasonably, it may be worth a look. Think about it.
  18. Agreed. As I said earlier before the flood of "YES, LET'S GET RID OF ALL OF THEM" flood began, when done well, they're nice to have. I'm still for them, provided they're a bit less ubiquitous and a bit more thought through by the poster.
  19. Indeed. I was having a hard time telling if that was intentional or not. Certainly appropriate, at any rate. As for the old titles, for some reason "Okami? More like Oh Crummy!" sticks out in my mind.
  20. Sam & Max: Situation: Comedy

So: Just finished it. Very enjoyable. Actually laughed out loud (or "lolled," as the kids say...) more times with this one that Culture Shock. Although overall I think I found Culture Shock a bit more fulfilling. Maybe it was just that it'd been so long since I'd played an adventure when I played CS, dunno. Still, awesome work. TellTale really seems to have a good handle on how episodic stuff should work. I am pleased. Only one bit gave me any trouble. Still, there's nothing inherently wrong with an easy adventure game. The pacing for a comedy game is definitely helped when there's constant progression. Complaints? I'm still a bit irked by the fact that I can't tweak the resolution. Widescreen support is also something I'm still looking for. Jake, you do interface stuff, right? What gives? Or are we talking something outside of your jurusdiction?
  21. Must-play PlayStation 2 games

Totally agree. In 2007, when playing a new game, I shouldn't have to have my roommate ask me from the next room "Are you playing Banjo Kazooie?" It's like they ripped the speech files from Bottles and threw them into a new game.
  22. Must-play PlayStation 2 games

I was really looking forward to God Hand for a while, and I think it's gone budget priced recently. Another of those "As soon as I have some time to play games rather than check forums between chapters in my textbook" games. If I can still find a copy in a few months, anyway. Seems like it may not stick around long. Maybe I should pick it up and have it taunting me from my shelf until I get to play. Thrik: Ah yeah, ok. You are at the end then.
  23. Must-play PlayStation 2 games

Damn right. The only reason I've been hesitant to pick up Portable Ops on PSP is that they seem to have replaced the standard MGS cutscenes with comic book style ones. Size constraints, yeah, I get that. Still, more than anything else, it was the movies that kept me coming back to Metal Gear games. I actually have a bit of a personal preference for the play mechanics of Splinter Cell, but the story of MGS makes it a much better series. I need to replay me some Metal Gear once this term is over. My gaming time goes from about 2 hours a week to "whenever the hell I want" come May, so that'll be a good time to fire up Subsistance for another go 'round. For curiosity's sake, how near the end are we talking? I thought I was near the end for a while my first time through, but then there was something like another 2 or 3 hours waiting for me afterwards. Endgame is looooong in that one, and manages to never feel drawn out. Okami is good, but don't let the hype get to you. It's beautiful and using the brush is fun and all, but the puzzles are pretty simple and the fighting leaves a lot to be desired. Still a solid game, and by all means play it, but don't expect too much. Also, couldn't Clover have looked at the near universal hatred of Navi and thought "Hey, maybe we shouldn't put something just like this in our game?" Instead we get a little green dude riding around with us going "Hey, Ammy! Remeber what that guy said two minutes ago? Here it is again!" Bastard.
  24. Guitar Hero, waiting for the 360 version. Other than that, I'm playing this amazing role playing game called "Psychology Major." It involves attending a bunch of classes while trying to hold down a job and have enough money to survive. Guitar Hero is actually a mini-game in it, as the character plays it to vent every now and then. Also Picross. There's an expansion out on Friday called "Reading Week." It's supposed to take place in the far off land of Ottawa. Where the hell do they come up with the names for these places? Oh, I'm also interested in Crackdown, but will probably wait until all the Halo 3 folk have their copies before I look into it too seriously. I could care less about H3 (would need to play 2 first...) and as such will just wait out the beta-rush before buying.
  25. When Harry met Sally

We need that smiley. NOW. I suggest that the next thumb contest be one to make the best :dancinmarek:. Any takers?
