...and the 360's first high-class B-movie Sci-Fi game has arrived! Picked up Earth Defense Force 2017 as it's budget priced and looked like fun. It's exactly what you'd expect from a game that has a guy firing a machine gun into a giant robot's crotch on the back of the box. Mindless, dumb, ridiculous, pretty damned fun. Lotsa pretty explosions, lotsa giant robots/insects/lazer-dinosaurs/what-have-you. When the shit starts blowing up real good, the game does start to slow down a bit though. Still, for $40 Canadian, well worth the mindless explosions and chaos. Also, you can blow up buildings with a single shot from a rocket launcher. Great as Crackdown is, the fact that the buildings are impervious kinda bugs me. This makes up for it. NOT A GREAT GAME. I repeat: NOT A GREAT GAME. Still, budget priced and bat-shit crazy. I have the feeling that this one will end up as one of those guilty pleasure sort of cult classics. A "Remember EDF2017?" "Heh, yeah. That game was shit. Fun though." "Wanna bust it out for a quick go-round?" "Why the hell not?" type of game for the ages. If you've got $40, a 360, and some time to kill there are far worse ways to spend it.

Powered on my 360 when I got home from class tonight and found your friend request. Sad to hear your DS had to go for that to happen, but as others have said, you got yourself a pretty sweet deal there. If you're up for Gears, Crackdown, or PGR3 multi sometime (and I'm not at work or in class, which is kinda rare. *sigh*) I'll have a go. Have been focusing on Crackdown lately, but the other two are fine games as well. Enjoy your new console.

I knew it! He's from the future! On topic though, I remember hearing about Drawn To Be Alive a while ago, when there was just a trailer for it, and being really pumped. Any word on when I can actually get the thing?

I'm a seven at the moment. Haven't had time for much other than Guitar Hero since the winter term at uni kicked into full gear, and honestly haven't been following the news too closely either. Xbox Live Arcade seems to have something I want to play every week now, so I'm keeping up with that, but otherwise I'm just waiting for the end of April when my exams are over so I can get back into stuff. Also, money is an issue right now. Another thing coming at the end of April is that I'm picking up a second job for the summer, so gaming may actually become affordable again as well. Both would put me up to an 8, maybe 8.5. I don't know if there's really enough on the horizon for a 9 right now, but considering I'd still like to pick up Bully and God Of War II before retiring my PS2, there's some last-gen games I'd be playing as well.

About three letters and a bunch of punctuation more demanding than F.E.A.R. Anyway, as F.E.A.R. is almost a year and a half old now, I'm pretty sure S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s requirements would kick the crap out of it. Time to upgrade, perchance? Not that I would for this game in particular, but there it is. I'll say this much for my transition over to (primarily) console gaming, it's sure saved me a crapton of money on hardware.

It was good. Not my favorite, but neither is Ocarina, so make of that what you will. If you enjoyed Ocarina, I'd recommend it, although I found that the four dungeons of MM seemed to drag on more than the nine of OoT. Still, a good game, and as I seem to be in the minority on my "meh-ish" feelings about the game, don't let me stop you from enjoying it.

I read mostly non-fiction, so I'd be inclined to agree. Anyway, sort of on-topic, as someone who already owns a 360, I'm a little miffed about the HDMI option being denied me. I'll probably end up buying a 120GB HDD when they become available standalone, but if I ever (and I can't see why, but it's possible) want to jack my 360 in through HDMI, it looks like I'm SOL.

He's right. As for the games, I'm all for the latest Sci-Fi flood. They've been done pretty well so far. Gears was fun, Crackdown is hyper-destructive bliss, I've heard good about Lost Planet, and Halo is, well, Halo. You like it or you don't, but it's certainly popular. As long as they keep up the quality, I don't see a problem. None of the games (that have been released) that have been mentioned have seemed like cheap cash-ins when I played them. I'm also looking forward to Armoured Core 4. Something about giant robots kicking the crap out of each other just gets me all misty and nostalgic.

Oh c'mon. Those Nintendo people are wizards! WIZARDS I tell you! I never had a chance to play the original Nights, so it would be fantastic if they'd give me a shot at the thing. That and Panzer Dragoon, which I have played in its emulated format on Xbox, but would still be greatly appreciated.

Not seen Terminator vs Robocop? Get the fuck in here
miffy495 replied to Thrik's topic in Idle Banter
Heh. Owned that the second I spotted the DVD 5 years ago. Love that movie. Strangely, have never listened to the commentary. I think I have a project for once Thursday's exam is over. -
All that you mentioned are great. If you've played any of the Advance Wars games before, you'll know whether or not you like it. It really doesn't have much it can be compared to in contemporary gaming. I got it back when it came out mostly because the DS selection was still pretty sparse back then, but it grabbed me enough to track down copies of the rest of the series and I'm now a huge fan. For multi, it's turn based strategy. If you and your friend are both into the genre, it's a damn good game. Kirby's Canvas Curse (or whatever it may be called in your region) got a whole lot of love from me when it came out. I still remember it very fondly. Very well designed game, and if you're looking for stuff you won't get on other systems, there it is. Check it out. Finally, as I absolutely love the series, I gotta put in a word or two for Feel The Magic: XY/XX and it's sequel The Rub Rabbits. FTM is still one of my favorite games for the DS. It's just so messed up and charming that I fell in love with it instantly and still play it now and then 2 and a bit years after completing it in an afternoon. It got mixed reviews and not everyone loves it but it gets a full and enthusiastic recommendation from me.

Good luck with that. I had a shot at it for a while and then got distracted with school. I'm thinking I'll go back to it once summer hits, but honestly it was already starting to lose me a bit. It's beautiful, sure. Also decently fun, but there's nothing in it that really feels like it's going to engage me for the crazy amount of hours I've heard that it takes to beat the game.

If you'd like though, I have no objections to calling him a twat. I may do it now in fact. *ahem* FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA IS A TWAT. That is all.

I'm in the same situation right now. I usually go for a kneecap busting before going all-out with the driveby though. You catch more flies with a cricket bat than you do with submachine guns.

I was talking to the programming coordinator at my theater yesterday afternoon and he said we should be getting it at the end of the month. Two things: 1. I'm really psyched for it now. 2. Thanks for helping me look knowledgable in front of our programming coordinator!

Never saw T3. What's the word? Should I bother or not? And Rodi, Predator is awesome (the first one, with Arnie and Jesse Ventura) and you should really give it a look first chance you get. -
I'm really not sure how to feel about this one. I was happy that there'd be no more Katamari games when they announced that however long ago that they did. I didn't want the awesome of the series to get run into the ground. I guess it's wait-and-see time now...

Caught a couple of early screenings of upcoming movies over the last week. Saw The Wind That Shakes the Barley on Wednesday and just got back from a special midnight screening of The Host. Both come highly recommended for different reasons. Barley is about the IRA in the 1920s, and is really moving and quite unsettling. A very powerful film where you never really get to like any character, but you still care about many of them. Fantastic experience. The Host on the other hand, is a balls-out crazy Korean monster movie that takes its pedigree from the finest that Toho has given us over the years. So damned fun. Lotsa laughter, a couple of good shocker moments, and just enough drama to keep you engaged. Bring a load of mates with you if you can. I'd aranged to get a group of friends in with me and we filled up two full rows of the theater. Great time. The monster is beautifully animated as well. Just watching it cross a bridge is worth going. So yeah, those are my two most recent viewings. I'm pretty sure The Host has had very little exposure outside South Korea up to this point, but I don't know how long it's taken The Wind That Shakes the Barley to make it to Calgary, so that one could be old news for a lot of you. Either way, both great. Hoping to see Fido over the next few days too. It's a good week for movies.

Why are they pumping out so Many MMOs (bit of a rant)
miffy495 replied to Ginger's topic in Video Gaming
...new QOTM please? Ginger, I may now have to count you among my heroes for your brilliantly honest defense of single player gaming. As for micro-payments vs subscription, it would really depend on what I'm buying with micro-payments. I think I'd prefer them on the whole over subscription though. With a subscription, if they release something new every 5 or so months, I'm still paying for the other 4 months of the same game. With micro-payments I'm only buying what I want to play, and only having to pay when I can actually get it. As long as I'm not buying things that give me an unfair advantage over other players, fuck yeah. Side quests in a single player RPG, new songs for a rhythm game. These don't hurt anyone else's enjoyment of the game, but add to mine. The ideal micropayment situation. -

miffy495 replied to Ginger's topic in Video Gaming
I just hate the idea that you're paying a subscription fee after you've gone out and bought the damn game. If that's where PC gaming is headed, I'll go and chill with my consoles for a while and fondly recall the good old days of gaming on my computer. -
I can't be the only one that saw that shot of the snake and thought "go for the Ipecac!" ...right?

It's cute when a kid gets his father's name as his middle name? Just kinda tradition in my family. I got that, so did my dad, his dad, etc. Never really thought of it as cute before. As T is the thumbs baby, I'm not going to bother with the campaign to rename him and just always assume that the T does in fact stand for Thumbs until it is proven to me that this is untrue. Long live baby Thumbs!

I'm in. Just like animal abuse isn't something I'm down with in real life despite how I beat the shit out of my creature in B&W (I also played the good path in another file. I'm not a total shit. ) I'd be willing to fuck up a kid in some pretty major ways given the virtual opportunity just to see how the game would cope. For SCIENCE I say! EDIT: Originally said "I'd be willing to fuck a kid up" until I realized that I could later be quoted as saying "I'd be willing to fuck a kid." That just wouldn't do.

Damn that's an old thread. Oh well, welcome. Also, out of curiosity, why was your introduction edited by Yufster? What could cause you to get modded on your first post?

Wouldn't Dan just use his ninja mind tricks to turn the midget against Rusalka? I'd say we should leave the midget out of the fight. Maybe give her a bat and a particularly angry chicken or something. They're harder to reason with and confuse.
