Ugh. Now that it's out and I really want to play it, I'm working two jobs and spending all my free time with my 6 and 4 year old nephews while they visit. They leave on the 9th, and I'll probably be picking it up then. I'll be happy to have a few games once I regain a bit of gaming time. Meanwhile, it's family. When they're awake, anyway. It's 3:30 am now, so I have a bit of time to check the thumb. Love the kids, but being the 19 year old "cool" uncle who doesn't mind being treated like a piece of playground equipment can get pretty tiring.

I played Ocarina before Link's Awakening. Still like Awakening better...

The context being that RE 1-3 took place in Raccoon City USA, full of white Americans speaking English and RE4 took place in Spain, full of Spaniards speaking (*gasp!*) Spanish. My kill tally in RE4 on Wii right now tells me I've indiscriminately killed (by explodey headshot whenever possible) over 300 Spanish villagers. For some reason it's so much more wrong when it's on a different continent? Whatever. Judging by the comments on the blog, this one will be mocked ruthlessly and blow over quickly. Glad to see that the majority of folks on there have some sense.

The name was Hobbes. (I know, cliche. I was 6 when I named him, alright?) Sorry to derail the thread here. Thanks for the sympathy though.

Well, in fairness I never played KH2, only the first one so that's all I have to go on. In KH, the gummi ships were horrible, controlled like you were trying to drive a hovercraft with your tongue, and turned aiming your cannon into a sisyphean ordeal. On top of all that, they looked like those little jelly candies you'd make in those "make your own candy... with SCIENCE!" lab things they'd try to push on kids in the early 90's that always tasted really gritty and made you think that science was only good for making shitty candy. Playing through the gummi segments to reach the next level was like individually plucking each pubic hair before you could gain access to some fantastic harem. You knew the payoff would be great, but damn if you weren't hampering your enjoyment of it just to get in there in the first place. ...in case you can't tell, I really didn't like the gummi ships.

Saw that trailer for the first time earlier tonight. Came into the theater to start my shift and discovered that someone had added it to the front of Danny Boyle's Sunshine over the weekend without checking with me. Once I saw what it was, all was forgiven of course. My theater's program planner has actually lined up a pretty decent summer for us, which is rare for an art house. Most of our business usually comes 'round Oscar season. This summer though, after Sunshine (great, btw) we get King of Kong, Paprika, and The Darjeeling Limited. I'm really pumped for the summer/fall movies for the first time in years. We also had Eagle vs Shark for a while last month, which drew a lot of unfair comparrisons to Napoleon Dynamite but in reality was a far, far better movie. If it's still running where you are (or already on DVD) I highly reccommend checking it out. Finally, it's worth noting that in North America, The Host came out on DVD on Tuesday. Buy it. For the love of god, buy it.

I'll name him "Blaaaargh!" spoiler tags for those who aren't interested in my current pet situation.

Crackdown wins Develop's "Innovation" prize

Hey, if they can work it out so I can pose characters without their arms twisting around 20 times and looking like an overstretched rubber band, I'm in. -
Aren't Traveller's Tales working on Lego Batman as well? Whatever. I can see Lego Indiana Jones working out quite well. The trailer seems to have kept the sense of humour from the LSW games quite nicely. Offering Bellack (Belloch?) the rubber ducky got an outburst of surprised giggling from me, at any rate. I'm impressed, and now am pretty pumped for this as well as the "Complete Saga" LSW thing that they'll be putting out with online co-op. Funny I'm not nearly as worried about the Lego franchises becoming repetitive and stale as I am things like endless Guitar Hero expansions. I guess when a franchise starts as the ultimate sell out, there's no outrage when it does so more.

Unfortunately no, as my cat gets put down on Monday. Still, the bunnies can make me smile, so they get much appreciation.

I think pEta would be on our asses over that one. There's no way a dog (even virtual) would come out of that without massive trauma. -
Crackdown wins Develop's "Innovation" prize

If it helps, my feelings on San Andreas were pretty much the same (with the difference being that I stuck it out through the territory bits and got to see the fucking epic last mission) and I'm still completely enamoured with Crackdown. I really couldn't tell you why though. I often get bored with sanbox games, but Crackdown held my attention. Maybe it's the use of achievements to make you discover more and more fun things (I would never have gotten the hang of driving [or discovered the joy of the stunt system] if it weren't for that) or the fact that when you finish the story mode, you can simply reset everything but keep your character to do it over. Either way, it really worked for me, crap nonexistent story and all. -
Fuck yes. Thanks for that. Just got some pretty awful news and that really picked me up.

Crackdown wins Develop's "Innovation" prize

And it really is. The extra character skins are free too. The only DLC you need to pay for is the pack with Keys to the City. That one is reasonably priced, and everything else is totally free. DLC done right. You can consider the first DLC pack a taster to convince you to get the pay one. Well done on the part of Real Time Worlds. -

Actually, at this point Crackdown is my "come out of nowhere holy shit this is awesome" game of the year for 2007. It's probably the purchase I'm happiest with over the past 7 months, so good on 'em for winning. I don't quite get why the "innovation" prize, but I'm happy they have something. Maybe their innovation was that the DLC is actually worth it? -
Damn, Rocks the 80s is a total cop-out. It's been a day and I only have 7 songs that I haven't 5-starred yet. Don't get me wrong, there's some fun to be had, but I doubt it's really worth what I played. Credit for Wrathchild, Caught in a Mosh, and Police Truck, but really there's not a whole lot more. Still, busting the PS2 out of retirement gave me an excuse to pick up God of War 2, so it's not a total waste. When will the 360 version get Cowboys From Hell, exactly? Can anyone ease my mind on this issue and convince me that I'll soon be playing Pantera on my beloved white obelisk?

Damn, after those comments, I'm actually kind of proud that I got as far as I did. Nope, didn't know I could run until you told me. I was a ways into the second disk when I stopped playing on GCN as well. *sigh* I wonder how much easier this will make the game?

Seriously??? FUCK. That would have been good to know last October when I played the fucking game the first time. :(

Very cool idea. I'd be in for any system except the PS3 that has shippable memory units. I'd suggest something for the PS2, as that probably has the highest number of thumbs with them. Though around here the 'cube seems to have pretty decent representation as well. An RPG may not be the best idea, especially one where the characters are determined by the player personality-wise (see: not a JRPG) as they simply take so long to play. Maybe a platformer? Something with determined worlds/chapters? "Finish the next chapter in Sly Cooper" or whatever. Final concern: region coding. I don't know how many people mod their systems, but mine are still all in their "out of the box" state. It would have to be done separately by continent in most cases. -
...I missed your thread titles. As for DA, I quite liked the chunks that I played. However, it seemed a lot harder this time around. I beat 1, 2, and 3 no problem. DA started kicking my ass around mission 5 and wouldn't let up until I caved in. But yeah, I was playing on 360, as consoles have always felt more suited to stealth games to me.

The controls are great. I don't know why they'd be considered bad. Sure, you turn using the stick rather than dragging the pointer over to the edge of the screen as you may be used to, but that takes all of 30 seconds to adjust to. I'll say this much for the Wii controls. On the GCN, my accuracy in a mission was around 75 - 80%. On the Wii, it's now 90 - 95%. Most of that headshots, too. The aiming is great. Leon's landspeed is about on par with a sloth with multiple sclerosis, but that hold's for the GCN as well. Really, any complaints I have with the Wii edition can be said for the GCN version. And usually they're much more irritating on the GCN.

So Spielberg's upcoming game projects are starting to see a little bit of light. A choice quote: ... Oh, I'm crying alright. Just not the way that I think Spielberg meant.

Gears is very atmospheric, I'll give it that. The machismo is so over the top that you begin to think there may be more to Marcus and Dom's relationship than mere friendship, so it's tolerable in that "almost a parody" sense. Definitely play it, as it's just a lot of fun. Your fears on Pinata are very nearly justified. There is no endgame, and it does get kind of chore-ish. They spice it up well though, as you grow your garden in more elaborate ways you attract bigger/cooler pinatas to it as well as different nasties. You can even convert the nasties to live happily in your garden if you do it right. In this way, while there aren't really any goals in the game, you start to set them for yourself. Things like "Man, I really want some more Pretztails, so I'll have to breed a bunch of Quackberries to feed to them to make them want to mate" and "shit, I really need to figure out how to get those deer-looking things to stick around" suddenly become very important. As for Crackdown, hell yes. Although I must warn you, there really isn't any story to speak of. There are 21 gang bosses and a bunch of orbs that you grab. That's pretty much the game. Thing is, you can jump over buildings, throw busses at people, and pull off all kinds of amazing vehicular stunts. The game got slammed for repetitive bosses and no real narrative, but the fact is that as sandbox games go, this is the most insanely, gleefully, balls-out fun one I've ever played. This is coming from someone who never really got into the open-world stuff in GTA and played for the crime drama. Crackdown just keeps on constantly poking at the id, and I haven't found a game that does it better.
