Yeah, but we're doing it legally. Also, I'd like to make it clear that if your post count is below 20 and/or your join date is "October 2007" I will not be transferring one of my licenses. Known thumbs only, please.

Got it. Now who wants some games?
-
Hey whatever. I have time for other games now. I honestly was kinda relieved when they announced that.

My girlfriend was the one behind the camera. The one on the far left is our mutual friend who introduced us. The other two are friends from various places. And yes, all are cool and geeky. As proof I offer the fact that two of them camped out together for the release of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. I met the one on the left at a concert and learned that I worked with one of her friends. After that we began absorbing our groups of friends into one another. Y'know, the usual way to meet people.

At least Smash Bros got delayed until February...

So I just caved. I don't know how this works, but I already have a copy of both HL2 and HL2:Ep1, so I think I now have each to give away as well. If there's anyone still needing a play, let me know. If you know how to send said license over, that'd probably also be useful.

Well, it's getting done tomorrow, but she's now really pumped about it. Whatever, I'm not too worried. We'll see what happens.

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

For whatever reason, the last couple of weeks I felt like listening to the stuff that I listened to in elementary school. Fortunately for me I went straight from Raffi into Green Day around age 4, so it's still good music. This means that the last little while has been all about Weezer, Green Day, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dead Kennedys, etc. When not listening to the punk, grunge, and rock of my elementary school and junior high years, I'm usually listening to things like Tom Waits, The Robot Ate Me, Hot Little Rocket, and Run Chico Run. As a last thing, if you're into spoken word-ish stuff, The Fugitives and Tons of Fun University (T.O.F.U.) are both really good. T.O.F.U. has a lot of pure spoken word stuff, while the Fugitives tend to have more musical backing, but I'm quite into both. -
Considering doing a shave-off myself. Well, actually, I just need a regular haircut and the girl has said she wants to experiment with my hair and see what she can do. As it'll all grow back anyway, I don't have any problems with letting her have a laugh. Thing is, given her obsession with Taxi Driver, I'm probably going to end up with something like the Travis Bickle haircut. No idea how that would look on me, considering that I've never had anything other than my former long-ish curly hair or my current standard guy scissor-cut, but why not? If it goes through, pictures will soon follow. Here's me two nights ago at a friend's birthday party to give you some current reference: I'm the boy, in case you weren't sure.

Just bought it today and have played through the first (fire-themed) dungeon. The controls are really tight, and as the running around with the stylus was the main thing that I was worried about this comes as a huge relief. I managed to run myself off a cliff a couple of times early on, but after about 5 minutes of adjustment it gets really easy to control Link. My only gripe is that the sword is back to being an automatic thing rather than a button press, as there are no button presses unless you're bringing up the map. I kind of miss that extra level of control over my fighting tactics, and this way I'm always worried a bit that I'm not at the perfect angle to deflect whatever is coming at me. The last bit on control is the very welcome option to use the shoulder buttons to bring out your secondary weapon rather than tapping the icon for it in the corner. Going up and activating the boomerang and then going back to draw a path is a bit of a pain compared to just holding L and drawing where you want to throw. A very good move on Nintendo's part. As for ease, well, it's only the first dungeon so far so I won't make any judgement calls. I didn't take a hit from the first boss, but then when I play Ocarina the boss of the Deku Tree doesn't even get to move before she's dead so I'm not going to take that as an indicator. Graphics and music are great. Wind Waker mini sort of stuff. The characters are a little pixely when brought up close and hands and feet are essentially just circles, but the fact that they've squeezed as much as they did out of the DS is simply amazing. I'm hoping for some sort of huge and splendid moment like the coming to life of Hyrule segment from WW later in the game, but have no idea if it's coming or not. Story picks up within what seems like a couple of months of the end of WW and is the most direct continuation I've seen from Zelda. Great for me, as I desperately wanted some more of that universe. So yeah, what else can be said after one dungeon? It's not very different from older Zeldas, especially Minish Cap. The game season is pretty damn full, as Noyb said, but this, Mass Effect, and Rock Band were the three that I was completely sold on, so now I get to play and wait for the next release.

Fair enough. I still consider RE4 a TPS, it's just that the mention of light guns as an example of first person brought to mind the Wii edition I've been putting so much time into which is, as mentioned, a something of a TPS/light gun hybrid.
-
Light guns makes me think of something kind of interesting. As actually holding a gun (or pointer, whatever) and shooting at the screen is arguably about as first person as shooting in a game can possibly get, where does that leave games that have you shoot like that but still show you your character? I'm thinking specifically here or RE4 for the Wii. On the one hand, the game is a third person shooter. You're seeing Leon in the third person and running around and watching him do things. On the other hand, when it comes time to do the actual shooting, you hold up your gun/wiimote and fire at the screen in what I would argue could be called the first person. Yeah, you can still see Leon, but you can also see your own arm and gun shooting at what you want to hit. FPS? TPS? Too weird to classify? Any thoughts?

Wasn't that how co-op always worked in Halo? I never played 2 with a friend, but I remember being 15 and playing through Halo 1 on legendary in a night at a buddy's house. I wasn't so good and kept dying, but thanks to that little rule, we progressed at a steady pace all the way. wrt Zombie, it's pretty much the only part of Halo 3 that has me interested. I really dug Killing Floor for UT2004 back in the day and any time a game can capture that sense of desparation I know I'm in for a good time. When I eventually do pick up Halo 3 (no plans to, but I've accepted the eventuality) I'll likely spend far too much time in this mode.

Nappi, those conversations you came up with are a horrifying window into your mind. Well done, I gotta say.

It's half past nine pm Saturday night and I worked all day and haven't slept since Friday morning. Having to go to a 10 am shift this morning straight from a party was not fun. Tomorrow, the girl and I are going to watch a couple of movies for the final day of the Calgary International Film Festival, then I have to go to my own theater for a couple of hours because the person they put in charge on the last day doesn't know how to do film work. Once I've bailed her out, the night will still be young and I haven't figured out what I'm doing. Looks promising though.
-
Seconded. Where are all these people coming from? And the fact that they're now interacting with each other and forming some little sub-forum is either kinda cool, pretty weird, or a practical joke. I can't figure out which.

Saturday: A friend turns 20 years old. We make fun of her new "adulthood" by all wearing suits, smoking cigars, and drinking port. Later we remembered that we're young and stupid and managed to catch air in a minivan. Yeah, yeah. The driver was sober, relax. Just a little crazy is all. Using the 'Vainia rating system:  Sunday: Meet up with the girlfriend mid-morning. She doesn't feel up to much, so we end up just going back to my place to chill. Ended up as a very enjoyable day, especially as it was fucking cold outside. Downside was, she gave me her cold. Overall:  *cough*

Myself, I got to overtime mode and then started getting my ass kicked by the bosses. Haven't gone back to it since. I'd like to finish overtime sometime soon and maybe even go for a replay of the game, but you're dead right on the sudden difficulty spike. The military guys didn't mess with me too much. After killing one and getting his rifle, the rest became pretty easy. The bosses though, what the hell?

I found a use for Gamefaqs!!! I'd heard that three new songs were coming down the pipe for Guitar Hero 2 on Thursday. I hadn't heard of the bands, but fuck it. It's new songs. I don't really care what they are as long as they're decently fun. Problem is, they still wouldn't show up on my system when I went to look to download them. I started checking various forums to see if other people weren't able to get them either or if the problem was on my end. After an hour or so of no luck, I gave up and went to the Gamefaqs board. Lo and behold, page after page of whiny little shits bitching about the content not showing up when it was supposed to. Now that I know the content is actually delayed, I can get back to keeping an eye on when it's actually released rather than worrying if my live account has some problem. Thanks, entitled-feeling GH-addicted 13 year olds!

That video... I can't...

I'll be buying it eventually. Still haven't played Halo 2, but I have a friend who's bored of it and will be giving it to me to play. Once that's completed, I'll give 3 a shot. No rush, but yeah, I'll eventually be in there too. What I don't understand is the obsession that so many people seem to have with completing it the day it comes out. to that.

Given the suck of my current computer, I'm tempted to get the whole thing for 360 as I've never had a problem with console shooters. Main concern with this: Will there be cross-platform play? Will I be able to play with you folks if I'm on 360 and you're on PC?
-
D'oh. I replayed the tutorial and realized that I could aim my shots with the other stick. I still suck, but less now.
