  1. No text necessary

Well, I'll be far away from internet connections all next week, so your gamerscores are safe until I at least get home from camping.

Does Dawn of War II give achievements? I bought it when Steam had it on half price, but haven't had a chance to play it yet.
  3. Clerks and Casuals

Actually, I am very conscious of this and try to stay informed regardless. As an example, I would not buy Prototype as I currently have no interest in supporting Activision. If someone asks me if Prototype is good, I tell them "it's been received reasonably well. I haven't played that one myself, but it seems like it would be great fun if you'd just like to dick around and cause mayhem with superpowers. Maybe not so much if you're interested in a coherent story." Also, earlier today I recommended the G-Force game to a mother looking for something for their small child. From all I'd heard, it was actually competently done. Not anything to occupy an experienced gamer for any amount of time, but surprisingly good for a child-centric game. These are two games I'd never touch myself, but I try to keep myself informed well enough to be able to recommend them to people who would like them. The reason I picked GI Joe as the game I'd never sell is that I've now read three separate reviews for it that all used the word "abomination." That doesn't seem like one to recommend.
  4. Brütal Legend overload...!

For the record, PC version but with a Logitech analog controller. Meat Circus drove me crazy, not because of tonnes of death all over the level, but because those spiral fences took me an hour and the rest of the level was finished on my first attempt. Seriously. What the fuck was up with those things?
  5. Clerks and Casuals

Hey now, I'm a clerk at HMV. I happen to be the games guy at my store. I'll have you know that some of us games clerks actually know our shit. Apparently our games section is the second most successful in Canada, and we're a comparatively small store to most. And these are good games that we're selling. Our overstock shelves of shit games are bulging, while we always seem to have just enough good games to go around. I don't let people leave the store with a shit game unless they insist on it, and I'm driving my manager crazy with how blunt I am when someone asks about one. Still, he can't do much about it when people are asking for me by name and our sales are doing so well. Policy be damned, you're not buying GI JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA on my watch unless you absolutely can't be convinced.
  6. Wii Sports Resort

Who's Nintendo's whore? I AM! IT'S ME! Anyway, picked this up because the reception so far has been generally positive and oddly I've been playing mostly Wii games lately anyhow. Also, I wanted to see if this Motionplus thingy was actually worth a damn. To my great surprise, yes. Yes it is. Not only that, but the game is pretty fun too. Ok, so there are a few total flops. Basketball sucked out loud when I tried it, and I have yet to even look at that cycling thing, but for the most part it all does a good job of making you feel like you're doing it in real life. Like anything Wii, how much you get out of it corresponds directly to how much you're willing to buy in and act out the whole thing. I don't have a problem looking like a fool in front of my girlfriend and the cat however, so I went all out. Drawing the bowstring just as I'd been taught when I learned archery, really getting into the table tennis, striking poses like Errol Flynn when winning a sword duel, all that stuff. Of all of them I have to say the frisbee and swordplay probably feel the most fantastic, with the canoeing also surprising me with how authentic it felt when I tried it. The frisbee was the first thing I tried, and watching the disc rotate perfectly with my wrist while I tried to get just the right curve on a throw was incredible. I just got this crazy feeling of joy out of it. All I can say is, if you have a Wii and are curious what it can do with this little gyromajigger attached to it, go for it. You'll have at least a few good hours of fun with it, and can show it off to people later as well. I hope (but don't know if I can let myself actually believe) that something real will actually come of this thing and it's not just a gimmick that 3 or 4 games use before it fizzles out. So much potential. So much goddamned potential. Of course, we were all saying that about the Wii in 2006 as well.
  7. Beatles: Rock Band

5 stars on most (like, all but 2) of them too! Actually, I haven't played for a while. I've pretty much moved over to drums now, which is much more challenging, but still (mostly) doable on expert. And please don't misconstrue my first sentence. I don't mean it to be a boast, just a joking poke at people. If you're having fun with it, that's the whole damn point. It's for that reason that I gave up on Guitar Hero completely. No fun, just challenge. For all I care, the score junkies can have that franchise.
  8. Left 4 Thumbs

Nah, you're thinking Mountani time. Probably because you play with me a bunch, and that's what I'm on.
  9. iPhone/iTouch gaming

I already bought 1 and 2 from GOG though. I really don't need a version that I'll never get to hear the audio on anyway...
  10. FUUUUUUCK!!!

360 just Red-Ringed on me. That is all. :( :( UPDATE: After a few minutes of being turned off, it's ok again. Though I don't doubt it will be crapping out on me again anytime now. I know I'm not the first thumb to go through this. Any advice from those who've already trod this path?
  11. Wii Sports Resort

Yeah, the golf and frisbee golf in Resort are awesome. I found early on that the method that got me through Wii Sports golf was actually terrible form and made my shots cut badly to the right every time. That the game forced me to correct this before I could ever make par is a good example of the motionplus at work. The bowling is pretty much the same, honestly, with the only minor enhancement being to how sensitive it is to spin. As has been mentioned on the podcast, the table tennis is pretty good too. I suck at it, but it's good. For the record, I have played a bunch now, and have not had to recalibrate mid-game once. Maybe there's something wrong with Nick's motionplus, I dunno.
  12. Phriday Phun

Not for the next couple of weeks, but once school starts up I'll have Friday afternoons off and will probably be up for a round or two of whatever. Probably you were looking for something more immediate, but hey, there's some info for you.
  13. Movie/TV recommendations

Being a projectionist does have its benefits. One of these was about two years ago when I put on a private after-hours showing of Brazil for myself and about 10 friends. Simply awesome. So yes, I am a Gilliam fan. And yes, seeing it on the big screen is amazing, no matter how many times you've watched it.
  14. WTFFF!!!!

I am also failing to understand why this is a WTFFF situation. What's the deal here, Spaff?
  15. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Yay Beirut! Bought Flying Club Cup when it came out, and then was lucky enough to see them live at Sasquatch 2008. Great show. Did you get the dual-EP they put out earlier this year, March of the Zapotec? The second disc is utterly brilliant.
  16. Oh fuck ye- sigh... (Beneath a Steel Sky)

He's just prepared for when they do turn around and notice they should be holding him up.
  17. Warren Spector's Disney project concept art

    Man. Holy shit.
  18. Forza Motorsport 3

Actually, that's something I forgot that GT definitely has over Forza. Forza has a bumper cam but no cockpit view. After playing GT for a while in cockpit view, trying to go back to Forza was irritating as hell. The one thing that Forza 3 will really need to win me over will be a nicely rendered cockpit.
  19. Forza Motorsport 3

GT5 Prologue on PS3 was my first ever experience with a GT game. For a few weeks there, I absolutely loved it. It's a really good game. Unfortunately, the "Prologue" aspect reared it's ugly head and I got sick of always driving the same tracks. Forza 2, while still honestly having a very limited number of races, just kept feeling fresh longer. I will say that the garage in GT5P impressed me, but I'm not a car guy at all and can't tell the difference between most of them anyway. While the variety was appreciated, it didn't do much for me. The physics I didn't understand well enough to notice a difference. I think I allowed myself to graze walls a bit more often in GT, but I was always pretty cautious as Forza 1 was my first experience with a sim-ish racing game and I learned to drive in fear of any minor hits. Anyway, the reason I chipped in on this thread was to try to provide a bit of perspective for the not-car-fan who still wants to have a good racing game every year and a half or so, which I get the feeling toblix may be. Forza is the most accessible "realistic" game I've ever had the pleasure of starting up. If you want to enjoy the game and not feel like you're in over your head all the time, go for it. GT is good (I know you have a PS3 too) but you should really cut your sim teeth on something else before you dive in.
  20. The OTHER Pirate Bay thread...

Is Imagine Life a new Ubisoft DS game?
  21. Life

And really, isn't Audrey Hepburn exactly who we should all be looking to when our lives take a bad turn?

  23. Sorry, ended up having to cover a shift this week so I could get last weekend off to go to a music festival. Next week is the anniversary with the girl, so I'll probably be with her on that one. Week after, I'm in again.
  24. Thumb Fortress 2: The Sessioning

I'd be in, but life has seen a dramatic upturn in "busy" lately, so it would be sporadic. Still, I'll keep an eye on any threads that turn up and join when I can.
  25. They're called *Video Games*

    No love for "talkies?"
